@Stuffgamer1: I believe that high divorce rates are a product of the gradual evolution of society. The days of staying with your husband or wife even if you are woefully unhappy or in an abusive relationship are over. Also, with regards to crime, aside from some statistics from 2005-ish here and here that show crime (in the US, anyway) is actually down overall from previous years, one must take into account the concurrent evolution of weapons technology as well as the rise in the world's population, not to mention that now we also have the technology, resources, and willing people available to keep proper records of crimes as they occur.

Have some more crime trends charts; they're rather interesting. You'll also notice that the percentage of crimes that have been reported to the police has been increasing as well.

@malnin: as far as I can tell, that was your only contribution to this thread, and we are all fully aware that arguing about religion is pointless, thanks. :P

@Stuffgamer1: I'd like to point out that Time Changer was an independent Christian film, so it is pretty clear where the bias is going to be in it. Also, you may believe that society is degenerating, but I believe that all things are relative. As it evolves, the older generations look back on what they grew up with and see that things are no longer the same, the kids of tomorrow are doing things so differently from how they were done yesterday, and they get sentimental for how things were back then.

Pretty much. For example, society told us indentured servitude and slavery was just peachy back in the days of America's beginning, but eventually that was ended and now society thinks it [slavery and indentured servitude] was wrong. "Whomever/Whatever group is in power gets to say what is right" is pretty much how a society/how society in general works. That's what I believe, anyway.

According to how I believe, who says what he did was wrong, you ask? Society has always and will forever determine who or what was right in the end. It is the masses who choose punishment and mete it out accordingly, who shun the unbelievers and praise those who conform admirably, not a higher being.

you may believe that way, but I do not. i believe... was the operative part of my reply that you seemed to have missed. in the spirit of this thread, I have shared how I feel about that particular topic. I have in no way attempted to preach to you outright that I think you are wrong, because what you believe is your own business, but you are toeing the line and getting pretty heavy-handed in your responses to me here, my friend. :/

in direct response to "How does society determine what is wrong? How do our parents determine what is wrong?", I believe it came about naturally back in the dawn of time when people began to band into groups and live with one another, in order to curb retaliation or the need for recompense between individuals and for the group to stay strong as a unit against predators and other groups or tribes; again, I feel it was a gradual evolution of society in response to the need for living together in some semblance of harmony for protection against outside invasion that 'right' and 'wrong' as concepts were named, accepted as social morals or laws, and handed down from generation to generation. I do not believe that our human consciences are due to direct influence from any kind of god or higher being.

WWF might run into licensing issues... they switched to 'WWE' for a reason. that's kinda beside the point, though, because wrestling games are like sports games -- unless the newer ones really, really suck, chances are people are going to be more interested in the current-year release than an old version with (relatively) crappier graphics and a vastly dated roster.

and, to be honest, Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 is a pretty awesome game, as wrestling games go.

Yea, because the Nazis were very anti-violence. You're a genius for figuring this out. I hope you've warned the UN.

I just meant that Germany seems to be becoming a dictatorship more and more as time goes on. I just used the Nazis as a comparision. It's a censor of free speech, and this is not the right way to stop violence in Germany.

God did give us our morals. He gave them to us through our conscience. He also wrote down the ten commandments, but not everyone knows them. Everyone has a conscience. When you lie, steal, covet, etc. your conscience tells you that what you are doing is wrong. Every person has a conscience, but they don't always follow. You know when you feel horrible after commiting a sin, that's the guilt of your conscience.

you may believe that way, but I do not. i believe the conscience is a result of living in social groups, of society; society tells you that what you did was wrong, and thus the inklings of shame appear within because, as humans, we have the ability to remember what we have done, we can think about it and the consequences of our actions from multiple angles, and we can empathize with all involved, for good or ill. when you lie or steal as a child, your mother or father admonishes you and tells you that you have done something to be ashamed of, that you have hurt someone else, and that stays with you for the rest of your life. nothing wells up from within as your conscience until society or natural consequences (i stepped on the frog and now the frog won't play with me anymore, why won't it play with me? perhaps it's hurt... i shouldn't step on the next one) come in to put it there.

I switch between Windows Vista and Ubuntu/Kubuntu daily thanks to my husband's obsession with Linux. While I don't really notice much of a difference between Ubuntu and Kubuntu (gnome vs. kde isn't a big thing for me), the Linux boxen are so uncluttered and refreshing to use compared to Vista, and I like not having to constantly worry about viruses and those 'OMG there's a problem in My Computer!!!1' ads or popups that sometimes show up in firefox, lol...

However, Vista (obviously) runs Windows-based programs with ease (as opposed to emulation via wine), I have little problem with compatibility between the Vista computer's text files and outside computers' text files (i tried doing my resume in OpenOffice... yeah, that didn't go so well when I opened the file under Vista; god only knows what those prospective employers saw D: ) and also supports certain peripherals (Nintendo Wi-Fi Adapter, configuration as a wireless access point with proper antenna dongle) that a Linux-based system can't at the moment. I also trust the Vista system when it comes to burning CDs/DVDs. as opposed to Ubuntu (which I had a major problem with re: some important backups at one point... sigh).

in short, i don't really have a favorite, but if i did, it wouldn't be Mac OS X (tried that for a couple months on a business trip and hated every second of it). :P
