it's nice to know at a glance if something rated an 8 out of 10 got seven of its points from innovative gameplay and one for plot, though, without having to wade through a wall of text and/or fifteen pages of screenshots for the details. :3

@Sean: i can safely say i've never seen a major brand of soda in a 3-liter bottle... it was always store-brand/off-brand stuff and weird flavors, like peach or strawberry or orange. bleh. also, i don't recall seeing them very often, though i could just be overlooking them at stores nowadays. what kind of stores are you going to where you see them in numbers enough to spawn that mini-rant? :3

Re: Review scores - how much do they matter to you?

i kinda like it when sites/blogs have categories for games that get scored individually -- graphics gets a score, soundtrack gets a score, ease of play/controls gets a score, plot gets a score, etc. and so forth -- that get added up into one big score at the end. that way, i have a better idea of what i may be getting into with a new game.

Re: What are your favorite/least favorite VG-based movies?

theblackdragon

I actually enjoyed Doom, mainly because (a) my husband had just finished Doom 3 with me watching over his shoulder the entire time, so the game was still fresh in our minds, and (b) we went in knowing it would probably be crap anyway. :3 As for personal favorite, though, I'm gonna hafta go with Mortal Kombat. I still listen to the soundtrack every so often.

Well i dont see why your knuckles hurted from holding it up. it would seem a bit too stiff using the d-pad. i prefer making link follow the stylus around.but it should let us put our own controls.i know a bunch of people who have messed up touch screens so they cant play.

ah, i didn't realize you were being sarcastic up there, then. my bad. :3 as for how my knuckles were sore, i don't know how that happened either -- i just remember that after a few nights of playing, my hand started to ache and i'd have to reposition the DS, but then i'd revert to the position that felt most natural to play in (if I had to hit the d-pad as well as the L button for whatever reason) and suddenly i realized that it really, really hurt to continue to hold the DS that way. the fingers that hurt were the ones that were supporting the DS (my ring and pinky), and if i'd been playing in front of a table it probably wouldn't have been an issue, but i was either sitting in a chair or lying in bed while playing PH for comfort reasons, and so i had to hold the thing up in front of my face and play somehow.

with other long games that offered button directional controls as well as stylus controls (Suikoden Tierkreis, for example; i'm pretty sure my last save on that game was 60 hours even), my hand(s) hurting wasn't an issue.

Re: The Legend Of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (hmmmmmmmmmmmm)

@cryptonic: the controls for Phantom Hourglass killed my hands (my left hand, anyway, because i use the stylus with my right). holding the DS up for as long as it took to collect enough orbs and hearts and ship parts to power Link and the ship up... my poor knuckles were sore for nearly a week after I finished the game. I, too, would like to have the option of button controls for this one as opposed to it being (mostly) stylus-only.

also, somersaulting was a pain in the rear end. it's a good thing knowing how to do it wasn't required to finish the game, because i'd'a been screwed.

Re: Starfy or Rhythm Heaven?

theblackdragon

@minial100: ... i was making a joke with that, because they are both good games, but Starfy is a platformer, and TWEWY is not, so on that level (and that level only, to be honest) Starfy would actually be the 'better' game. I think TWEWY is one of the best DS games out there, but if it's not your cup of tea, whatev'. :3

@mariofan5000: Piracy is illegal. Homebrew, in and of itself, is not, though it often opens the way to piracy, which is why companies work so hard to stop both.

Re: DS Game Advice

definitely seconding TWEWY RPG-wise, but if you decide to go rhythm game, you can probably find a copy of Elite Beat Agents for mad cheap now. :3 if you're in the mood for retro RPG action, though, there's always FFIII, FFIV, or Chrono Trigger.

Re: Should Nintendo inlucde some sort of achievments/trophy system in there next console?

theblackdragon

@uriahheep: i dunno, Nintendo's all about playing together and wi-fi stuff, and it seems like an achievement/trophy system for games in a future Wii update/channel or their next console would be a good thing for them to include... i could see a 'show-off' channel for leaderboards or something, like the high scores they used to print in Nintendo Power back in the day (haven't been a subscriber for over a decade, don't know if they still do that or not). It's good that Microsoft is taking cues from Nintendo and trying to step up their game (direct competition benefits the end user in the long run), but Nintendo isn't so perfect that they can't possibly take cues from competitors.

Re: The Legend Of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (hmmmmmmmmmmmm)

theblackdragon

i dunno, the train's just a stand-in for getting around by boat, it seems, and that worked all right for Phantom Hourglass. as long as there's still dungeons and puzzles to complete, and as long as it gets decent ratings, I'll at least give it a shot before dismissing it entirely. the non-train bits of the trailer looked interesting.
