... so what happened to that reply where AlexSays was asking why your name was 'katiepoo'? inquiring minds wanted to know.

I don't have many games that have online capability anyway... i prefer local multiplayer or single player gaming action. I don't like having to depend on someone else's connection and willingness to not shut off their machine if they're losing in order for me to have fun. :3

Re: What DS game were you surprised you hated??

theblackdragon

@Kid_A: drawing skill doesn't matter with that game... for me, the problem was that it was flat-out boring. There is no freedom as to what you may or may not design yourself -- you literally walk into some levels and are thrust repeatedly into designing platforms or elements when you just want to play the darn level already. Also, certain things I thought would be most fun (i think i remember a submarine and/or an airplane or a rocket on that list) turned out to be the most annoying because they had an enforced shape that could not be altered (i couldn't make the submarine into an octopus, for example).

Of course not. We don't know how anything went down. Maybe he wasn't supposed to post those pics but didn't know. Maybe it was just yet another leak. Who knows. Who cares. But the point is that the artists working on the game weren't just told, "here are some disney characters. Have fun." No, they were working with explicit instructions to create steampunk, robot versions of Disney characters. You may not see these exact scenes in the game, but concept art is often used to get the style down.

and now we come back to my initial reply to you, wherein I refuted the allusion to the myth about the dude who commissioned the Taj Mahal mutilating his architects so that they could never create anything similar -- those designs were definitely put to use, whereas we may very well see nothing like these images in the upcoming game (provided it sees a release at all).

Oh well, you know these artistic types. This is exactly the reason why Shah Jahan killed or blinded all his architects and builders after they finished the Taj Mahal.

not so much, considering the designs for the Taj Mahal were actually used. The posted artwork could very well be of designs that were not/are not suitable for use in the game for whatever reason... that's pretty common among artists; rejected artwork is fair game for portfolio fodder.

Re: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Old vs. New

theblackdragon

@Chicken Brutus: Yeah, they're all classics, but give me a break... 'Cheer up, Charlie'? ugh... and I can't stand all the Oompa Loompa songs either; I very much prefer the new ones that at least use lines from the book's songs (even if the way the writers knitted them together doesn't make much sense, as in Violet's song). At least Dahl's original work (and Charlie, as it followed that with the OL songs) gave us the morals in a darkly amusing manner after we watched the drama with the kids play out; Willy Wonka beat us over the head with them (in sequences with seriously dated textual effects; what the hell were they thinking!) after we already knew what they were trying to show us (don't be a glutton, don't chew gum all day, don't be a spoiled brat/don't spoil your kid, too much TV is bad for kids).

Also, I think I forgot to mention that I like some of the other actors much better in the new version. Charlie has some personality (beyond just being a young poor child) in this one, as do all the grandparents (Grandpa George is pretty hilarious in fact... he reminds me of one of the old guys from The Muppet Show that always crap on everything :3), and that old guy who plays Grandpa Joe -- I like him a lot. He has this gentle, kind aura about him that the Joe from the first movie lacked, and you can really believe that he's too feeble to walk at first (unlike Joe, who looks like he's just laying there).

@eripmav: My favorite Dahl stories have always been Matilda and The Witches. Granted, I haven't read every single Roald Dahl book out there, but a lot of what I have read was either dark and creepy or they just have some seriously twisted characters, and I like that.

i don't understand what you're talking about with the CGI in that particular scene -- you know the squirrels were real, right? sure, there was probably some CGI going on there to help set up the shots, but most of the squirrel acting was done with live animals in the actual room with actual props (and actual nuts ).

@grenworthshero: i'm pretty sure the squirrels were actually in the book, though. i'll admit the 'don't touch that squirrel's nuts!' line was a bit over-the-top, lol, but I liked how the little guys turned the tables on Veruca, determined her to be a bad nut, and then carried her off to the chute... and then went straight back to work like nothing was wrong. I also liked the bit with Wonka trying to find the right key and then magically finding it right when it was time for dad to enter the song.

Re: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Old vs. New

(a) yes, I very much agree with you that the new version was much better than the old. The lame songs were left out (and the Oompa Loompas didn't have morals shoved into their mouths in Charlie; they actually used lines from the songs from the book!), the kids and their families were updated for modern times (Violet being a best-at-everything tomboy with a room full of trophies instead of just a salesman's daughter with a gum-chewing record; Mike being an insufferable know-it-all and into violent video games, which didn't exist back then or when the book was written; etc.), they didn't keep the awful schoolmaster scenes or the part with the fizzy lifting drinks (which didn't exist in the book) or the part with Wonka screaming at Charlie, and you're absolutely right -- the new version did a much better job of coherently telling an interesting story that was also visually pleasing. I think that's just the magic of Tim Burton and Danny Elfman, though, along with the narrator they utilized to keep everyone focused on what was happening.

(b) I have to disagree... I liked Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka much better than Gene Wilder's. Wilder portrayed a much more business-like Willy Wonka, and between the contract, the schemeing with the Slugworth impostor, and the screaming at Charlie at the end of the movie, it was hard to believe that such a whimsical factory was really any product of his own doing... Wilder's Wonka was more like a ringmaster or a frontman than a lighthearted soul capable of creating impossibilities at whim. In contrast, Depp's Wonka was so airheaded, flighty, and (for most of the movie) inwardly focused that it was easy to see he honestly believed he could do anything with candy, and thus, he was actually able to do it (and it helped to have the added backstory behind his current mindset). Depp's Wonka was still a child at heart, and even though he did yell or do things to prompt adverse responses at times, he was so silly about it that it was impossible to believe he was doing anything out of malice. Wilder's Wonka seemed truly angry and downright psycho at times, and there is never a time in Willy Wonka where I am able to believe that he is anything other than an old, cranky businessman at heart.

Re: What's Your Favorite "Turn Based RPG" Currently Available on the VC?

theblackdragon

@Ravage: I love SMRPG, Paper Mario, old (pre-VII) Final Fantasy games, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, and other old RPGs, and I also loved Breath of Fire II. I'd go for it if I were you, it's a great game.

The only advice I have to give about BoFII is this: you have the opportunity to be nice to people throughout the game, and then later on if you talk to those same people you'll have the ability to invite them to live back at your place. Some people will give you awesome stuff (they'll sell great weapons/armor/items for you), and others just take up space... and you only have so much space to fill, so visit GameFAQs and decide who you want to butter up.
