if you want real fun, the best drinking game EVER is 'Drunken Uno'. Basically you take a sip whenever someone uses a special card against you (draw two, normal wild, skip, reverse, etc.) and a swig whenever someone uses a draw four against you. we usually had so many people playing we had to combine two decks of cards... it's so much fun, omg. :)

oh man, the Wii can be so much fun while you're drunk if you've got friends around. Guitar Hero definitely springs to mind, and then you can also make up drinking games with VC titles -- we had 'Drunken Mario' going at one party... i think we were taking sips whenever we passed a stage and swigging/gulping whenever we beat a level or died. good times.

being drunk and playing alone, though... i've never had much luck with that. unless it's something i can probably play in my sleep (any Mario or Kirby game, Lego Star Wars, etc.), I prefer to be fully sober and alert while playing video games. :3

people like to throw around the 'i already own the game, so it's just a backup copy' excuse, but that excuse only works if the ROM you have was actually dumped from the cartridge you own. you can't download a ROM from the internet that was taken from someone else's cartridge and try to call it a backup of your own copy; that's where it gets illegal.

in other words, no, you do not have the right to download a ROM from the internet, because you did not purchase that cartridge and the person who originally uploaded it also had no right to distribute it. what you do have the right to do is dump your own ROMs and use those as your own personal backups if you like; do your own research on that if you're interested.

@Machu: no problem, man -- it's not just you, either, don't worry. between this discussion, the smoking thread, and the drinking thread, and then more ranting from SSBFan1999, i am sick to death of people getting all up into the business of others... i've been having to play devil's advocate far too often lately. that's why i would really like or NL to finally put their stance on legal homebrew in writing; i'm very tired of apparently walking that thin line by defending myself and other posters. how do you know where the line is when it's not actually spelled out anyplace and people automatically assume that you should have known better? that's not very fair to anybody. :/

anyway, i have always believed strongly that once I buy something, it's mine, and if i want to use it in a manner the manufacturer or designer didn't have in mind, so what? I'll take responsibility if it blows up on me, but so long as i'm not using it for anything illegal, what do they care what I do? :3 there's some interesting little random games and applications for the Wii (as well as many emulators), but i've used homebrew apps primarily for DVD playback (yeah, i know using the Wii to watch DVDs is supposed to be bad for the drive, but whatev') and music and video file playback (the TV is hooked up to a nice surround-sound system, may as well get some use out of it, lol). Mahjong Wii is fun (but then again i love Mahjong solitaire), and WiiPhysics is a neat little application to mess around with as well. i haven't bothered with GeckoOS/Ocarina only because i've never really felt the need to before; i don't have any games from other regions lying around, nor have i ever felt bored enough with any of the Wii games I own to bother cheating my way through them. :P

@Machu: frankly it would be nice if NL would officially go zero-tolerance on it; i'm sick of seeing people take pot-shots at those of us who choose to run homebrew on our Wiis. we are not all filthy pirates. >:/

however, by the letter of the community rules, discussion of homebrew is still allowable here, because it is not illegal nor is it actually mentioned by name, and i find it distressing that the mods here also seem to think that homebrew stuff should automatically be lumped in with warez and piracy, that they shouldn't have to bother differentiating between it because it's all illegal somehow (which is not the case). seriously, how hard is it to come up with some kind of official announcement (like the 'no more jokes about Corbie and the number 7' one) or to edit a few words into the community rules to include talk of homebrew as 'unacceptable content'? Hell, i'll write the announcement for y'all:

'Hey guys, we'd like to keep our relationship with Nintendo on good terms, and they're not thrilled by the idea of homebrew applications being run on their hardware, so we're adding discussion of homebrew apps as unacceptable content on the forums. There are plenty of other places on the internet to discuss Wii/DS homebrew; please don't do it here.'

i lied, i didn't bother waiting for any reviews of the Wii version to show up.

it is incredibly cute. I like the story (and killing cute little samurai guys and having them turn into animals that you can possess afterward is fun :3) and the graphics (they're kinda simple, but they work well), I like messing around with the magic spells and the other ninjas you rescue to see how they fight and stuff. as with most action-adventure games nowadays, there is a collection aspect to it, and it's nice because you can check at any time during the level how many things (new spells, plants, jizo statues, etc.) you've collected, and it also shows you the same information at the end of the level, where it also allows you to remain in the level if you like in order to collect whatever it was you missed.

that said, it's kinda annoying (especially during the first two levels) because as you learn how to do new things, every time you come to a place where you can do that new thing an image of what you need to do will pop up onto the screen in an attempt to be helpful. it would be nice if you were able to disable that or at least make it much more unobtrusive.

this game auto-saves at the end of every level, and there are multiple checkpoints scattered throughout each level as you go... however, I have not yet found a way to re-use a checkpoint, so say you activate one, break an animal out of a cage, and then get yourself killed... you'll respawn at the checkpoint and find the animal is right back in the cage again. an exception to this seems to be spell scrolls... i died at one point and tried to go get it again only to freak out that I couldn't activate the little shrine, but when i checked my inventory, the spell was still there. so whatev'.

be aware that when you use certain magic spells, they use the wiimote for aiming. i have a bad habit of not really keeping mine pointed at the screen all the time, so there have been many times that i'll fire up a spell only to have the camera suddenly fly off toward the wrong direction, and you only have so much time before the spell activates and then you've shot it off toward nowhere or something. :/

the camera drives me up a wall as well. for some reason I'm constantly having to control the camera myself instead of being able to just let it follow Hiro as I go, because it doesn't like to stay focused the way i want it to. for example, i'll be near a cliff, and I'll point the camera down so that i can see clearly where i can and can't step... and then as soon as i let the camera go and start moving again, it'll refocus on the horizon, which looks pretty, but hurts me when i fall off the damn cliff because of it. :/

the last major thing that gets me about this game is that, unlike other action-adventure games like Twilight Princess and Okami, you don't waggle the wiimote to use your weapon/hit an enemy. You have to press B to hit the enemy -- swinging the wiimote directly downward will make your ninja do a stronger attack, but it's not your primary attack (it's meant more for breaking through an enemy's block and stunning them iirc) and it's only a downward swing. left-to-right doesn't do it. there have been more than a few times where I've caught myself frantically waggling the wiimote trying to get my ninja dude to attack when i really should've been tapping B instead. i don't know if they were trying to get away from the waggling thing or what, but not having that as an attack gesture is really taking a lot of getting used to.

all in all, i'm having fun at the moment (lol, the first boss is pretty funny :3), and i hope it gets better once i rescue more of my ninja buddies and get used to the controls. :3

@warioswoods: i'm sorry, but the point i was trying to make was not that you were being too idealistic, it was that the government is too corrupt and the general public too willing to comply. you can talk about democracy and how things should be all you like, but the fact is that it all comes down to the people elected to be in charge, and in a nation so willingly bamboozled by flashy propaganda-filled commercials, cheesy grins, artfully deflected questions, and how much muck one side can rake up about the other, please understand my lack of hope that things will ever really change.

also, on a surprisingly-related side-note, when i first read the OP, i meant to bring up Toys, a Robin Williams movie that pretty much features this kind of scenario -- where kids and teenagers are recruited into a military force via video games. it's a great movie, if kinda dated by now. :3

i just picked up the Wii version... i'm on the third level, and i'm having fun, but the controls are taking a lot of getting used to. for some reason, it doesn't have the same intuitive feel as Twilight Princess and Okami did; the major thing is that i keep wanting to swing the remote to attack instead of pressing B like I'm supposed to.

the camera is kinda driving me up a wall. it has the tendency to zoom in for no apparent reason whenever I try to use a magic attack on enemies (fireball, tornado), completely throwing off my aim. it may be because the wiimote was pointed in a weird direction; that too will take practice to control.

another thing is that I do not like the way the game tells you almost every time you come to a point where you can do something (pick a flower, shake a tree or a door, search for magic shrines) that you can do so. seriously, let me do it on my own, will you? i'm not an idiot, and it's not like you can't get to the map of the controls from the menu. the game is nice in that at the end of each level it tells you how many things you collected (jizo statues, plants, magic scrolls, etc.), too, which is enough of a hint that you need to go back because you missed something without being told as soon as you near an area where you're supposed to use the shrine-finding magic that you should use that particular spell. i'm hoping this is just because it was the first couple levels and that it will eventually stop notifying me of this BS, because if there's a way to turn this stuff off in the 'options' menu, i'm not seeing it. :/ it's almost as bad as the 'You found a (insert color here) rupee! That's (insert number here) rupees!' message that popped up all the time in Twilight Princess, though that stopped the game entirely, while this is just images of buttons popping up on the screen and obstructing your view as you go. blarg.

annoyances aside, i like the story, I love the style of art they used (it's simple, but it works), and i'm having fun defeating cute little samurai dudes and having them poof back into forest creatures, and then possessing the creatures afterward. what can i say, I'm easily amused. :3 I also like that possessing an animal makes it easier for you to find hidden objects (the jizo statues and flowers). that helps a lot.

ah well. i only took a break because i needed to change the contrast on my TV for the third level, and then the phone rang. back to playing it. :3

edit: i wanted to add that when i got home, i was surprised to find that GameStop had actually sold me a sealed copy of Mini Ninjas. o_o

instead of consulting Dr. Internet, try going to your normal doctor if you're really that worried about it and see what they have to say about it. none of us are doctors, man; no one should trust health advice from strangers on the internet.

that said, this happens around the same time every year? sounds like it's just the flu or a cold. i get them every year when the weather changes too, and I'm also very prone to vertigo weeks before and after the major cold/flu symptoms show up/go away, which sucks hella. i can live with the normal symptoms of a cold or the flu, but the vertigo is what really puts me out of commission. :/
