Re: Explorers of Sky is a 4.9...

theblackdragon

@WaltzElf: and I read that they completely ripped off the plot from the previous game(s) and didn't bother to update the gameplay or graphics at all. The prior PMD games earned 6.5s, as Red and Blue Rescue Team were both being compared to other ChunSoft roguelikes, and then Time/Darkness was being compared to the prior games... perhaps the IGN reviewers are just sick of seeing more of the same in the series after having played through them all? idk. :3

@WaltzElf: ... did we read the same review? the one that closed with this paragraph:

IGN review wrote:

I just can't recommend explorers of Sky to anyone that has played the previous games. Hell, I don't recommend it even if you've never played Explorers of Darkness/Time. The game looks like a GBA game, and is chock full of lazy, dated gameplay. ChunSoft is a talented developer, but it'd be nice if it didn't keep making 15-year-old game designs. It feels like the only reason this game has a third version (or a second version for that matter), is because Nintendo knows kids expect it, and will snatch it up. It's a rip off, plain and simple.

even without the score, i'm not seeing anything about an audience (other than the little kids that are expecting a new Pokemon game, maybe) that would appreciate this game from the text of the review... o_O

@WaltzElf: there's a full textual review behind the link Odnetnin posted that looks fairly comprehensive to me. If the reviewer felt the need to give it a 4.9 even after all that, it can't have been without reason.

Re: Mixed Messages

theblackdragon

@ckites: from the demo video i watched a while back on The Nintendo Channel, to play this game, you only need one DSi with the game on it. You have to pass that DSi around to each person playing the game; no one else has to have a DSi at all. :3

@WaltzElf: Sure there's a way to "save" a piece of paper... just don't throw it away. Tack it onto the fridge with a magnet if you like. :3

Honestly, I'm with Hardy. To me, Mixed Messages is not worth it, because besides the 'you can play it on paper' argument, you have to hand over your DSi to someone else. I love my friends, but I wouldn't trust most of them not to drop a stuffed animal, let alone my DSi. D:

Re: Nintendo's frustrating history of being endlessly ripped off: a retrospective

@Adam: it had something to do with the SNES-CD format... while Nintendo would have kept control over all SNES cartridge games (of course), Sony would have had final control over what did and did not get released on the SNES-CD format discs. That's why Nintendo welched out of their contract with 'em; Hiroshi Yamauchi didn't like that at all.

actually, Nintendo didn't like what was in their contract with Sony for the SNES-CD (as in Sony would have final control over what was and what was not released, or something along those lines where Nintendo would be giving away control over their games to another company), and that's why they partnered with Phillips -- they kept the control in the contract with Phillips that they had (accidentally?) given away in the contract with Sony. It had nothing to do with piracy.

Re: Anyone else here terrible at pictobits?

theblackdragon

(a) do your best to rack up purple blocks early. Two of the bike riders in the image have purple suits.
(b) many of the formations involve L-shaped blocks stacked onto each other in groups of three... set one bit to 'catch' the open L-shape, and then set the two others while all the blocks are stopped in mid-air. while they're stalled, you can continue to place blocks for (and into) other formations to clear them. use that time wisely.
(c) again, try to beat it quickly. Later on in the level, giant block formations begin to fall... they're good if you're fast enough to clear them as they fall, because they have a ton of bits in them, but they're bad if they're not the right colors you need. D:

The key to pictobits is that, in each level, the falling block formations are repeated each time. Replay the level enough, and you'll pick up on the pattern and what you need to do to clear the level. The only bad thing is that, when you get to a certain point with the game, it's too repetitive to be very much fun. I wish there had been more randomization to the patterns of falling blocks.

Re: When It Turns 2010 are You going to Call It "Two Thousand Ten" or "Twenty Ten?"

theblackdragon

@Turbo: as I said before (plz to see reply 68), 'twenty-one hundred', 'twenty-two hundred', 'twenty-three hundred', etc. -- those are fine, because there's no round number (ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety) in the initial tens space. As long as it's not a round number, saying it as '(tens-value) hundred' (as would be in the case of the year 'twenty-one hundred') won't get you laughed at or ridiculed.
