The strategies he described should be just the beginning of what Nintendo needs to do. They need to shake things up in all aspects of their departments-advertising, developer communication, 3rd party support, etc. Regardless of what their intentions are, actions speak louder than words.

@ajcismo

Yeah, that sums it up. They live in their bubble, and it looks like it's popped one too many times. Iwata shouldn't leave Nintendo, but he should step down as CEO. Perhaps Arakawa could take over. He took a tremendous amount of initiative while he was President of NOA back in the 90's.

@Yorumi

I definitely agree on that as well. I rather them spend their money on their own studios than 3rd parties. Nintendo were great at making sports games, such as Ken Griffey Baseball, Kobe Bryant Basketball, etc. I don't see why they can't do that again. If I were them, I'd gather every willing person from the old Rareware and form a studio so that they could create games exclusively for Nintendo. But, as much as I don't like EA, Madden and Fifa do sell. Nintendo has to at least encourage those studios to develop for them. I personally don't care for GTA, yet you can't ignore it's sales. Nintendo has vision, but it's lack of initiative that's what's hurting them.

@Yorumi
Well, it's not about chasing fads, because that would be terrible for them. I'm talking about the method to which they do business. Some examples are: 1) their relationship with 3rd parties. Many of their biggest games are coming to next and current gen systems, except Wii-U. 2) The way they marketed/market Wii-U have been awful. It's as if they have little to no marketing experience. Not to mention the lack of marketing their games that's not Mario (like W101). 3) Retro is their greatest studio in the West, yet they need to expand more in North America and Europe in order to cater to those markets. Basically, they need a new Rareware in a few territories. 4)Iwata has said they are struggling with HD development. The entire industry has been dealing with that for the past 7 years and not one person at Nintendo didn't think that they would eventually need to deal with that?

And that's just some of the issues they need to deal with.

Nintendo absolutely needs to reevaluate their perceptions of the industry. They are world's greatest developers, yet management have made many mistakes the past few years that are catching up with them. It's time for them to stop living in their own bubble and do what it takes to stay on top in this industry. I hope Nintendo realizes the many issues it needs to deal before it's too late.

I'm not too excited about this game, but I'll be getting it regardless. Since it's based on Dynasty Warriors, it will most likely have multi-player. And if that's the case, I wonder what other characters could be added. Sheik, Zelda, Ghirahim, Hilda,...Groose?

He's very passionate about his work, and it shows. It's a lot of work, but that's the burden of being a perfectionist. I hope after all his hard work, Iwata lets him work on a new IP, or at least one that is dormant like Kid Icarus was.

I understand Nintendo is a gaming company that appeals to all audiences, particularly families. But they need to realize not all of their fanbase lives in the suburbs in a house with white-picket fences. The word "upgrade" was used numerous times and considering there are still masses of people out there that still think the Wii-U is just a peripheral for the Wii, that wasn't an effective ad.

raith commented on Poll: Is Nintendo's Wii U Advertising and Mark...:

This is one Nintendo's biggest faults. The best way to reach the masses, is to create an aggressive marketing campaign. Something that is unique, clever, and would attract most gamer's attention. Unfortunately, the people that handle Nintendo's advertising doesn't seem to get that. A great marketing blitz that is spread on billboards, mass transportation, before movie previews, and so on will have people talking. I actually wrote to Nintendo regarding this with detailed ideas and I have yet to receive a response. It's just sad when most of us here barely see any Wii-U ads but if you remember, SNES, N64, and Gamecube has such memorable and continually played ads.

Great to hear. I would absolutely love a new Pandora's Tower game in the future. If ganbarion can refine a few things, it'll be incredible. Pandora's Tower is the type of mature (in theme) game Nintendo should focus on.

Its good that Nintendo and Panasonic still retains a healthy relationship. The Wii-U does use a Panasonic disc drive and other components. Maybe we'll see Nintendo's future systems influenced by Panasonic's tech and style. I mean, they do have a common enemy-Sony.

@ICHIkatakuri

Right. I know, but it's not a true sequel, only a spiritual one. Nintendo should fund the project so they can actually work on an Eternal Darkness 2. Of course Nintendo would need devs to work alongside them supervising. Another good idea is to expand their studio's teams. Retro should be #1 on that list.

@ICHIkatakuri

I concur, all those games need new entries. I would also add Pandora's Tower, Custom Robo, and Eternal Darkness. I understand that many of their devs want to work on the big franchises, but Mario and Zelda are high caliber games, so they would need the best of the best on those. Nintendo has access to so many studios out there: Platinum (buy them, please), NST, Next Level, Retro, Monster, Headstrong, Shin'en, etc., that it would lift all that pressure of creating sequels to those franchises off their shoulders. They just need to delegate which IP goes to whom.

@Jahir Agreed. These guys not only respect Nintendo, but they have such great knowledge of their hardware. With more resources and manpower, they have the potential in becoming a powerhouse developer in Europe, which Nintendo desperately needs.

What Nintendo needs to do is expand Retro Studios even further. They already moved them into a larger office space which is a good start. Giving them resources to hire more people would help Nintendo tremendously. One team could work on an established franchise (Metroid, Starfox), while another team works on a new IP. With enough support, Retro has the potential to become this generation's Rare. Hell, Retro, already employees some former Rare staff as it is.

Nintendo already has an exclusive Sonic game, which is a great start to attract the Sega audience. I agree with some of you when you say Nintendo needs to resurrect more Sega IPs. But the one game of theirs they want see return is Shenmue 3. If Nintendo manages to fund it and other dormant Sega classics, it can definitely move systems.

I would love to see Wonder Red in Smash Bros. Bad sales or not, he is part of the Nintendo family now. He also has the potential for a great move-set. I wouldn't mind Bayonetta being in the game. Hell, since she is making a big splash on the Wii-U, Nintendo might as well buy the IP. It's not like Sega is doing anything with it.

Always good to hear positive things from other studios who collaborate with Nintendo. I do hope Platinum games becomes a 2nd party developer. Since they have two teams, one could create a new IP while the other makes a sequel or franchise revival such as StarFox or Nazo no Murasamejou.

raith commented on Say Hello To The Nintendo 2DS - A 3DS without 3D:

Nintendo is just fine with the 3DS and 3DSXL, but the 2DS is completely unnecessary. Not only will this confuse the masses, but all this time and money wasted on creating this device would have been better spent on funding more and unique games for both Wii-U and 3DS.

Thanks! I have yet to play Last Story, but Pandora's Tower is my favorite new IP (alongside Xenoblade) this generation. I absolutely love the theme, music and art style. Sure it has it's flaws but I sincerely hope Nintendo invests in this franchise because it has room for improvement and great potential.

Yeah, Nintendo needs to be more aggressive with their Wii-U strategy. The system has enormous potential, so Nintendo has their work cut out for them. Not too much information has been revealed at Gamescon, luckily, there's always Nintendo Directs.

raith commented on Crytek Announces New CRYENGINE and Doesn't Exc...:

@jsty3105 Oh yeah, being snarky is perfectly fine when the person reporting has legitimate criticisms towards a specific feature or news. Nearly everyone gets on Nintendo for region-locking, and I concur that their systems should not implement said feature. Though it's also about respect and professionalism. When the President of Epic was asked a while ago if the Wii-U could handle Unreal Engine 4-to which his response was"Hahahaha...no". That was incredibly juvenile of him to do that. He could've easily said," unfortunately the Wii-U won't be able to handle 100% of UE4 but it is scalable". Many (not all) people in the industry see Nintendo as some kind of joke, as if they were N-Gage. I don't blame JaxonH for how he feels. Constructive criticism is always welcome and needed, but not inept disdain. Will the Wii-U version of Cryengine be as powerful as PS4/Xbone? Of course not, but I applaud Crytek for trying and not dismissing. :)

@JaxonH
AMEN!, On a daily basis, us Nintendo fans have to deal with nonsense like that. Instead of just enjoying a video game for what is and not by who made it, most of those so-called "professionals" say and write things that are just asinine.

This game is a breath of fresh air in a market full (not all) of unoriginal games. The wait for this game will be tough-luckily, I have Pikmin 3 and the W101 demo to fill the void. Platinum proves once again just how awesome they are.
