I agree that they should have been free. Nintendo needs more examples like this to woo casual consumers. That was the brilliance of Wii Sports- it was immediately accessible and included with every system. Charging for them on the eShop won't reach that audience.
Megaman is just as much about precision platforming through deathtraps as it is about shooting. If this was put together by the Metroid Prime team (and the HUD definitely seems to indicate this), then I'm sure they would manage to integrate interesting environmental challenges as well in much the same way that they did with Prime. But if fast paced shooting and in-your-face killshots was all this project was going for (and I didn't see much else), then NOOOO THANKS! Metroid Prime worked so well because it captured the exploration elements of the Metroid series so well. They captured the SPIRIT of Metriod, while translating it to a new genre. An FPS Megaman would have to do the same thing.
@ Reddaye ... Sure, he is a ham head. I'm not saying that he does't have good ideas or occasionally back good games, but he has a history of hamming it up. But honestly, I think that his priorities are mostly in the right place. Like Warren, I am also an old gamer who thinks that mainstream gaming has lost its way... we'll see what happens in the next few years.
@TruenoGT Despite what I just wrote, I agree that games are games, and that they are at their best when they realize and play to this fact. So huh, quite the contradiction. What a great medium.... it makes me feel happy to be alive in this time. And great comments guys... good reading, and much more thoughtful than on most websites.
I normally think that Spector is a ham head, given his past efforts, but YES he is right. Most of my most influential digital experiences these days come from the more experimental and risk-taking indie scene. It may take a few more years for games to catch up with the likes of Aronofski, Nolan, et al... but they are slowly getting there. With no help from EA.
YES!!!! I still have tons of Battle Beasts stored in a shoebox somewhere. They were basically like my first Pokemon... elemental affinities and all. The heat-sensitive stickers on their chests were totally RAD!
This is great news. Third parties (or even Nintendo itself in a few years) will likely come out with replacement batteries that last longer, and all we will have to do is swap them in.
Hopefully, unlike the 3DS version, it won't crash your save file when you try to access the leaderboards. Shin'en never fixed this bug, so with no reason to go for high scores, I was done with Nano Assault in two days. Lame.
@Henmii Seriously! That game looks like it is running at 10fps. And yes, F-Zero GX is still the best futuristic racer ever made. Nintendo needs to round up some of that old Amusement Vision staff (who also made the equally kick-butt SMB2 on the same speedy game engine) for an F-Zero WiiU sequel.
Great interview... I also loved that Zynga line. Really looking forward to this one. I hope there are more Obsessive Completionist Disorder challenges.
Glad to see BIT.TRIP lead off this article. Catharsis is great, but my pick would be Epiphany. Man, I have listened to the FLUX soundtrack so many times...
Not only can my US system not play games bought in my new European home, but I can't even play multiplayer or properly streetpass (only the Mii plaza features work) with everyone around me. DAMN YOU REGION LOCK.
Streetpass in Munich depends on the weather. I got a bunch of hits on the U-Bahn last winter, when people were wearing heavy coats with plenty of room to carry a 3DS. However, in recent months my hits have dropped dramatically (maybe only one a week). I'm going to chalk this up to skimpy outfits without big pockets. I certainly have a harder time taking my system with me when it is 30C. We'll see if my theory holds true next winter. Anyway, I have a US region 3DS, so the games don't streetpass well with all these european 3DS's. And I can forget about multiplayer... STUPID REGION LOCK!!
I never paid much interest to the KH series, but I must admit, that demo is pretty fun... especially all that Flowmotion rail grinding. Quite perrrty too.
FINALLY! One of the biggest limitations of the 3DS has been the inability to touch 3D objects on the top screen. Force Feedback in the stylus is a brilliant touch that should help those objects feel real.
@ 6ch6ris6, I totally agree. The PS3 can do way better, but this would look great on the 3DS. There is a LOT of stuff popping out of the screen in those videos, so maybeee...
@ "Why did he say 25 years though?!" Because the game didn't sell particularly well, considering the amount of resources that went into it. My guess is there won't be another high-profile Kid Icarus game for quite a while. I would be down with a 2D eShop downloadable, though.
Sounds like dual analogue wasn't impossible at all, but that Sakurai-San felt a moral prerogative not to include it. I mean, after all, they implemented an option for aiming with the face buttons- dual analogue would take very little time to program with that already in place. His comments strike me as defensive and even a touch arrogant, but in the end it was his game and his decision to make. Yes he is correct that the stylus can offer more speed and precision to a skilled user, but why not offer all control options and let the gamers decide what to use? This would have netted the game a broader acceptance, and those who really wanted to push their skills with the game would use the stylus aiming anyway.
Having the rear view in on the controller screen sounds absolutely fantastic, especially when driving in 1st person view. It will make it so much more fun (and feasible) to block oncoming cars.
It is interesting that Nintendo is just figuring this out now. They have always performed poorly in the UK compared to other regions. Time for Mario FIFA.
@ mario300: Your comments made me smile. This is remix of the soundtrack to the original pilotwings for the SNES. Those "3D looking" images are pictures of the old SNES game. Although, come to think of it, this does seem like a no-brainier candidate for a "3D Classics" remake. I think the effect would work really well.
James- any idea yet if the there will be download play with the local multiplayer or if everyone will need to own a copy of the game?
@ #4: As for Nightsky, my guess is that Nifflas wants to move on to other things. There are still issues getting the game to run in proper fullscreen because it was coded in Multimedia Fusion 2, so the resolution is locked. There was talk of recoding it in C++, but nothing has been released. Still a great game, but I wish I could get it to look crisper on my TV. I also wish it had controller support... lazy.
The original Zelda is an amazing game, and one of the few ambassador games that is easily completed without restore points (at least the first quest). If you find yourself lost, just google yourself a map. Purists would have you face Death Mountain without guidance (as I did when I was 5), but honestly it's just as fun with a little help from the interwebs. Granted, I've been playing games nearly as long as Corbs and Zelda was my first true love, but if you don't "get" Zelda, then you don't "get" videogames. Period.
Dude, did anyone else notice that "Peru Nazca" (minute 1:49) has what appears to be the bird-shaped ruins from XEVIOUS ??!?! Gmaps be kickin it old-skool.
I didn't put much time into the Wii original and DKC Returns is a perfect fit for the 3D display, so I would be perfectly happy with a 3DS port... provided that they maintain a slick frame rate.
@LittleIrves I thought exactly the same thing when I read that. My mind nearly imploded trying to understand how Art Style could do a soccer game. Bringing the Art Style series to the 3DS would make my retinas very happy.
"Need for Speed: The Run takes racers on a wild ride across North America, from the eastern coast of California to the downtown streets of New York city"
The EASTERN coast of Cali, eh? Oh no! Did a big quake finally send the golden state sailing off into the Pacific? Say it aint so!
This video has taught me that to survive high-intensity flight sections, one should move the analogue slider in circles like a mad-man. Either CW or CCW will do. Fun?
