@ Adamant - Limited release numbers, a small following within an already small demographic (rpgs were still a niche game at the time) and an overall lack of coverage of the game. There were some print ads, but certainly nothing on TV that I ever saw. American gamers had only been spoon-fed a select few rpgs at the time, and strategy games were more the realm of pc gamers.

Back in the day, at times this game reached $80 or more at Funcoland... used! This is a great game, and (finally) a AAA title definitely worth the download. Of course it is a bit of a niche title, but it's good enough that I'd encourage even those who are like-warm on the genre to give it a chance.

@ Bendover83 - Yeah, I could really use me some Road Rash... and while we're speaking of EA, my guilty Genesis pleasure is the 'Strike' series... Desert Strike, etc. Herzog Zwei, Panorama Cotton (import), YuYu Hakkusho (import... but since anime has gone mainstream...), Steel Empire ( a lesser known, but fun steam punk-esque shmup), Ranger X, Subterrania, Alisia Dragoon (LOVE this game... The music is amazing)... just a few Genesis games I'd like to see either on the VC or better still in another collection. Arcus Odyssey, Castle of Illusion, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Crusader of Centy, I just can't stop myself!

Manicfatty commented on USA VC Update: Life Force:

Love this game, although the VC is getting a little 'shmup' heavy. Still, a very good game with a decent challenge.

If the surprise is indeed C64 games, I may just crap myself. I loved my C64. I spent hours playing games, and even more time making them... using the code from various magazines of course. Eventually I began tinkering with the code to see what it would do and began making mods of games. It was a great little system, and it will be nice to see it on the VC!

@ Rapadash6 - or it could be an opportunity for a return to 2 game weeks. I don't think Nintendo would see the release of a C64 game next to a better known console game as a threat. And depending on the pricing here, picking up that extra game could be a impulse buy that just adds more money to line their pockets. Just a thought.

And on an off topic note: Picked up Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the 360 and I can safely say it will be a long time before I will need to download anything! :) Saved a lot of money on Genesis games too!

Yup. 'All in all it's just another brick in the wall...' Bite me NOJ.
I bought the game used for cheap, but I feel like downloading the rom just to f Nintendo. It's interesting that, given the evidence in the link provided, there were actual samples of other artists music yet there hasn't been any sort of legal action. Even more interesting is that Nintendo of Japan obviously had no problem with releasing a game full of ripped off music at the time, yet is balking now at the thought of releasing the game in the era of the WWW. Hmmm. There was no You Tube, no mash ups, no DRM, etc etc when it was released on the SNES. I guess they only like to cheat when they think there's no way they'll get caught :P

Manicfatty commented on EU VC Update: ClayFighter and Sonic Chaos:

ClayFighter: Tournament Edition was the only one worth playing at all, but even that was only fun in short bursts and only for the novelty. I love my Genny, but the Sega version was crap... mostly due to the limited color palette, but the crappy sound can't be ignored either. It was a lesser version of a 'meh' game that had limited appeal, and even less replay value.

Manicfatty commented on OFLC Update: Two More Imports:

@ WarioFan63 - Hells yeah. Saturn Bomberman... in particular the Saturn Sega Net version with online play...is absolutely the best in the series. I really wish there was even a glimmer of hope that we'd see a Saturn channel. So many great games... so many that are hard to find imports. Radiant Silvergun anyone?

There were also a couple of odd-ball 3-d Bombermans on the Saturn in Japan. They're... interesting. Not necessarily bad. Just... different :)

So what's the verdict? Anyone know if the FM synth feature is in the states version? I figured that it probably wasn't due to the price (why not charge as an 'import' if an 'import feature' is included-we didn't get the FM synth here), but it would have been a nice peace offering for the 1 game weeks. :)

@ Devastator - DK64 blows and is the most useless 'collect-o-rama' out there. Stick with Banjo. And make sure you get yourself a copy of Diddy Kong Racing! Great game... even the 'adventure' mode. Multi-player is of course the best way to play, but having a solid single-player mode helps. And of course Golden Eye, since I don't see that on your list of games. Need I mention Mario? Hope that's a no-brainer! :)

Dead Rising doesn't LOOK all that good yet, but they could surprise us before the release. The tweaks in the gameplay intrigue me though. I might just have to rent it.

@Jasco - There were acually a few good games for the 3DO... at the time, the 3DO Road Rash and Madden were the best versions of their respective series! Super Street Fighter II Turbo was a good port for the time as well. Return Fire is a bad azz game and along with Road Rash probably one of my favorites for the system as well as Return Fire 2. I borrowed WotW from the only friend of mine who also owned a 3DO, and I can tell you first hand... it blew. The games above represent the 3DO's finest. Total Eclipse was a ok shooter that was more of a fun tech demo. Oooo... Star Control II. That was a stand-out too. Twisted Game Show was a guilty pleasure a fun game to bust out when friends were around.

Need for Speed - Meh, Crash n Burn - Meh

I wish I still had my 3DO.

@ VCfanboy108 - um...wow. Well, as much of a fan as I am of paragraph-long run-on sentences, I have to really question the thought put into your statement. I don't believe that Nintendo is 'stressed' about anything and I have a real problem with someone painting 'poor old Nintendo, the Multi-Billion Dollar company' as some hapless victim. And they are doing a poor job. Unfortunately unlike you, the vast majority of the posters on this page can't just walk over to Nintendo and help out or make things right. Our only recourse is to vent and hope for better and carry on. Makes us feel a little better to voice our opinions. I'm happy for you that you have that kind of power and access at Nintendo. Good luck with that.

Manicfatty commented on ESRB Cleans Up:

@Drake and chunky_droid - Not sure where you heard that esrb ratings are required by law, but that's not the case. There have, however, been attempts to pass laws enabling legal enforcement of the rating. I have not heard of any that have had any sort of success at the federal level. The entire system from the board to retailers is voluntary, but it's in their best interest to support and self-enforce the ratings as to avoid the sort of government oversight and legislation that you refer to.

http://www.esrb.org/retailers/index.jsp

Oh, and Uniracers still has a decent chance as it was done by DMA (Rockstar) as a member of the 'dream team' of 2nd party developers for the 64 and published by Nintendo. Unlike Rare, DMA (Rockstar) has no real obstacle to saying yes. As for Beetle Racing, I LOVE that game. I wouldn't really count on it appearing on the VC though. EA would probably be down with it, but getting VW to renew a license for the new Bug in a game that has Bugs shattering on impact is unlikely due to the bug's high profile come-back since then. At the time the new bug was just hitting the scene and the game was a great marketing tool.

Manicfatty commented on Talking Point: Is the Virtual Console On The S...:

@ ness - I hate to say it, but if that's all you are getting from these posters then you are completely missing the point. I'm trying to understand your unnatural lust for Nintendo, but keep in mind that tough love is still love. Nintendo is continuing to distance itself from it's core audience. It's obvious that this is to reassign resources to court their new audience... the casual gamer... and to promote the neutered Wiiware shop that never had a chance to live up to it's potential.

There will only ever be a handful of truly innovative and stellar must have Wiiware titles. Mark my words: Without change this is the most likely future for Wiiware. Everything else will be waggle games, cash-ins, and variations on a theme. And not very compelling ones. This is not a gloom and doom view however; I don't see this written in stone. But the walls need to come down. There needs to be a REAL storage solution, and a real push to reach out to indy developers. We all want to see Nintendo succeed, but only if they earn it. I for one won't support sloth and complacency. I certainly don't need mediocre to poor 'classics' trickling onto my console. So I vote with my Wiipoints, and vent here.

That doesn't mean I don't want good games (FYI - I own over 60 VC games, and I've finished at least 50 of them. I've owned the Wii since the midnight launch). Quite the contrary... that's what I, and many others here, have been asking for.

Manicfatty commented on USA VC Update: Castlevania III:

It's nice to see a truely 'A' title released. As for it being the second week of 'great' releases... aaahhh yeeeah. About that. Kirby? Really? That game is about as vanilla as it gets. VERY meh. If it was more challenging, or varied perhaps I'd have gotten more excited (And before anyone says it, I'm not saying it's a BAD game... just not evidence of a second coming or a VC revival). I'd say Castlevania III is a tremendous chance for a 180 for the VC. Build off of this Nintendo. Keep it coming!!!

I have the cart and won't need the download, but it's nice to see.

@7th lutz - Oh my... Shining the Holy Ark is amazing. It is such a deep game and very engrossing. So much to do. What other RPG's did you get?

Shining Wisdom is a funny one... the story is sort of 'meh', and the graphics certainly aren't pushing a system that was built for 2-D. But it succeeds where many deeper and more technically buff games have been failing. It's freakin' fun!!!! The game play is very entertaining if not groundbreaking, and the localization is typical Working Designs. It's sort of a light-hearted Zelda for the Saturn. This game took an unfair beating in reviews, but it kept me entertained from start to finish. The music is nice too. Just don't let some of the differences in the translation mess it up for you. It's a case of Sega of Japan being the usual arrogant D-Bags that they are and not releasing rights to certain TM'd names and story points. Lot's of fun little items, and quests. I look forward to hearing what you think!!!

Personally, I spent a lot of time playing with the monkey suit... if only you could fling poo! :P

@Captain_Konami - werd. My Wii is now being used by my fiance and her daughter. I may return to it with the release of Wii Punch Out, or the new Zelda. A little Mario might coax me. It's nice to see these show up, but I'm not going to get too excited. There are plenty of rated games that have not yet see the light of day and I have a feeling that Super Punch Out may release closer to the new Wii Punch Out. Ogre Battle is a FANTASTIC game for those who enjoy the genre. 2 noteworthy games to spread out over how long? Who knows. Nice to see them, but I'll reserve my judgement and enthusiasm for an actual release.

It's a shame Nintendo couldn't make at least one region happy. Instead the reheat a couple of sh@!-burgers on toast for you to swallow with a smile. I'm gonna go play Castle Crashers, and then stream a Netflix movie. I have no use for the VC anymore. And the European VC update kind of reinforces my loathing.

At least it was solid for a while, and I have a good 60+ games. What I haven't downloaded I'll play by way of cartridge!

But i digress, and I wish you well when you get your import 'festival'. Hopefully Nintendo will do right by you then!

Manicfatty commented on USA VC Update: Kirby's Dream Land 3:

@ ness - Um... If it's a Wiiware game that has been released, why wouldn't I? So... I think so. And check the quote. I DID say RELEASED. So, to recap... of all the Wiiware releases, there are none that capture the magic of Braid, and the old-school meets HD online multiplayer game play of Castle Crashers. As a duo, they have more value/bang for the buck than all the Wiiware releases... not future games or planned releases. World of Goo is basically carrying the rest. The vast majority of Wiiware games feel like game or tech demos and nothing more. There is very little substance. Hell, Star Soldier is nothing more than a mode from a full game. I pretty damn tired of Nintendo's contempt for core gamers. They treat us like an inconvenient truth, and an annoyance.

Manicfatty

#39

Manicfatty commented on USA VC Update: Kirby's Dream Land 3:

@ Betagam7 - Well said... Braid and Castle Crashers alone are worth more than all of the Wiiware releases. And imagine actually having 10+ high profile, highly rated disc-based games for the Wii this holiday! But it didn't happen. Not on the Wii. For that sort of gaming joy, we have to look to the 360. Sorry folks, but them's the facts. And I bought a Wii before any other system this gen. It was over a year before I bought a PS3 (Blu-ray Player),and I've only had my 360 for about 4-5 months. Now I find myself on my 360 most of the time, with some major time put in on the PS3 recently due to Castlevania Chronicles, and Suikoden as well as a beautiful new shooter. As for Nintendo, until they take us seriously and give us decent VC updates, far better QA and oversight for Wiiware, and a real storage solution that doesn't assume we are naive and dullards, I'll stick to my classic systems and carts, and my 2 HD gaming systems.

@ Mickeymac - I don't know about lesser quality... different, yes. But I enjoyed it. Maybe more than the first in some ways. The control was better, as was the music and sound in general. By virtue of it's later release the graphics were predictably better. Variety in locals to explore, and a new approach to powered attacks made for, in my opinion, a much better game.

I'll play PSIV on my Genesis, Secret of Mana on my SNES and give my Wii a holiday... a very long one.

Edit - Oh yeeaaah! Turns out my free game is Street Fighter II HF. I love HD gaming! :) Especially when it's free! Now, where's our free VC game again? Oh yeah...

@ Draygone - I'll have to watch that clip, but in the short time I have I'll just note that the form and color was deliberate. It was to position it as a toy for the same purpose that the created the Wii: to broaden their market and become the 'family system' Of course the cube didn't really make that happen... there are a variety of quotes I remember hearing from different Nintendo peeps, including Miyamoto-san that basically said as much. One of the conversations (and I'm really paraphrasing here) was basically about others taking game machines too seriously and that they were essentially toys/entertainment devices for children and a few adults. At the time they were still sold on the idea that the biggest gaming market was kids and teens. And I'm pissed I can't find the quotes/interviews! Dammit! Oh well. Doesn't matter :)

Edit: So I watched the vid and I can get behind a great deal of his logic but not all of it... and certainly not the apocalyptic extremes he reaches. The third party doom rhetoric in particular. But he kind of reiterates the Nintendo mantra, circa 'Gamecube era' that I was referring to. If there was such writing on the wall, Nintendo saw it but didn't know how to make the break themselves and they ended up with sort of an 'awkward tween' of a system that didn't really fit in anywhere. When they couldn't make good on the family system/kid recruit machine alone, they began to court the 'core' gamer. But by then the stigma was there and it was the 'toy' or 'lunch box' for life. Outside of the fanboys, and kids there were few believers.
One thing that he fails to mention in the vid. These 'M' games are appealing to and played by... KIDS! As frightening as it may seem, there are a lot of kids playing mature games... most with their parents blessing... or indifference. One only need to log on for some Call of Duty or Gears to hear the breaking pubescent voices dropping 'F' bombs. So the next gen is in place, if not what we are comfortable with or expecting.

@ Mickeymac - Not exactly an easy choice, but I guess it would come down to your taste and fav genre. Personally, I would take PSIV over Ys, but that's just me and Ys is an awesome game. On the other hand, even if it doesn't have the longevity and substance of Ys, Alien Soldier is a great ride while it lasts. Ys=more bang for the buck... Alien Soldier=more bang period... lot 'o shootin'! If only you could trade in your old VC games when you beat them :D

@ Wesbert - Whether or not XBLA is more like Wiiware or VC, I have to say I'm enjoying my XBL Arcade far more than the VC... and far FAR more than Wiiware. Add to that the fact that Nintendo and third party publishers haven't released any real 'must have' disc based games this holiday season, and you have the reason for the exodus. There were a lot of great games released in the last few months for the 360. And I play the hell out of Little Big planet too. Add to that actually having a HHD to store said games and many of the XBLA games being in HD with some sort of online play and achievements... yup. Me happy!!! :)

@ Atlantis1982 - If you were ever able to express an opinion without lashing out ignorantly, and insulting everyone when you rarely have the facts your comments would be welcome. But instead of engaging people in articulate debates, you rant on with half-witted commentary featuring gross exaggerations and pointed insults. Who the hell ever said that there was nothing but single game weeks this year? And MANY people voiced there disappointment with other games on compilations. The only reason anyone owning the Mega Man Comps still bought the VC downloads was because they didn't like the controller setup. Everyone here is aware of what games are available.

The Gamecube was last, in part, because Nintendo was arrogant and alienated many 3rd party developers with their policy towards newer tech and internet gaming. It was also due to Nintendo not understanding their audience, and positioning the system as a toy. The lack of DVD player hurt them as well. Not because people necessarily needed it, but because of the perception that the Cube was behind the tech curve in every way. Their refusal to discuss the systems' tech hurt them, because the system WAS more capable than the PS2 and could hold it's own and in some cases best the XBOX. There's more, but to assert that somehow Nintendo fans sick of being ignored brought down the system with opinions posted on a board somewhere is... well... dude... are you on meds?

You are an abrasive ass and you don't voice your opinion, you insult, preach, and spout absolute rubbish. That, not your opinion, makes you the flame target. Quit being an ass. No one here whines more than you do.

@ WarioFan63 - Not sure I follow your logic. The more one game weeks we get, the happier we should be? The less we should be annoyed? Hmmm.

As for today's release, I think it's mostly been cover in the posts thus far. But my two cents - As an rpg fan and someone who bought this game for $100 the day it released, I can say that if you are an rpg fan, and you don't own any other systems this game is an amazing value and an incredible play.

Having said that... It's another flippin' one game week, it's a game that is already on a compilation disk, and is soon to be available on another... this time in high-def (and, it seems, with achievements), and it is a game with a very specific and narrow fan-base.

I for one love the game, and I'm glad to see they took the time to release it. Yet even I won't be downloading it due to - no answer to the storage issue (in fact, they've insulted our intelligence with the SD Card BS), the afore mentioned compilations, and the fact that I still have my $100 cartridge.

Close, but not quite on target.

Edit - Oh...and Nintendo? Suck it grinch-ass yaaatches.

@chunky_droid - werd. but I still contend that M$ is making it happen and their home brew community is everything that wiiware should have been. I have over 60 games on my VC/SD card, so I hear ya. I just enjoy the XLA environment/content, and the fact that I have a 120Gb HDD. No swappin' crap!
