koresh1959 commented on Otakugate – The Saga Continues:

It's quite obvious that the original comment was made on a whim and without malice, but that doesn't make it any less ignorant and insulting (i.e. the dismissal of widespread and valid concerns) to a large portion of Nintendo's fanbase.

I have high expectations, what with everyone saying it's so much better than Paper Mario. I like PM 1 & 2 so much that I expect to be slightly underwhelmed by this, but we'll see. As Bass X0 says, it's not really anything to get excited about in the short-term.

While he didn't phrase it so eloquently, it is true that the more dedicated gamers will be the ones filling up their Wii's storage. BUT I want to know how much of the market share these kind of gamers make up of Nintendo's demographic. There's obviously the principle that because we're the one's buying more games, we should be the one's who are supported. Nintendo thinks they've nailed the "casual" audience so can afford to screw its dedicated fanbase.

Tim: I suppose you're a popular high school quarter back trying to knock down Laurent's reinforced golden mansion gates with your massive muscular arms? ;¬)

My point is that that trying to distance yourself from those annoyed by the situation is pointless, because it's a problem nonetheless--and a major one at that.

What I want to know is how popular the VC is among casual gamers. Nintendo really broadened its target market with the Wii which is why their profits are high despite its library of games not being that good, especially for more dedicated gamers (yeah, there are some exceptional titles, but on the whole it is undeniably lacking). I can't imagine this family demographic loading up the Wii Shop channel and downloading retro games. I can only imagine the people doing that are more hardened gamers who have an affinity in one way or another to retro gaming. This ties in with the fact that "only geeks" have storage problems--because perhaps a large portion of the Wii's market isn't using the VC service, or at that, probably downloading only a game or two?

Reminds me of those sand-digging sections in Super Mario Bros. 2... I hated them! But this looks fairly interesting.

The only thing that slightly annoys me (and even then, not particularly) about this game is that there's no true level select (only 1-4), which I think should be available after completing the game. My favourite stage is #7 but if I want to play it I have to play levels 4, 5 and 6 first, every time. But still, level select for stages 1-4 is generous so it's not really a valid complaint.

@Shortay: on easy, I can complete it, and did so today in one sitting. That says a lot because I am a novice at shoot 'em ups and this is the only one I can finish, even if, embarrassingly, it's on easy. On normal I can get 3/4 of the way through. It's definitely the easiest available on the VC that I've tried, so it shouldn't put you off. Regardless, it's a wonderful game that everyone should play.

I really want to play this for the novelty factor. The only thing that puts me off is that the sequels are more erotic, and I'd like as much obscure man-erotica as possible to justify a purchase. How predominant is the homosexual imagery in this game?

koresh1959 commented on Samurai Shodown:

I read that the slowdown was present in the original on the Neo Geo, so it's not an emulation issue - not that it changes anything. It looks quite bad in the video (thanks) so I'll probably give it a miss for now and possibly download it when I am bored of my current games.

As Bass X0 has stated, can anyone else vouch for the prominence of the lag to new players?

Waxxy: thanks for clearing that up. I assumed they wouldn't connect through their own protocol, and I wouldn't know anyway because I've not played multi-player DS with a single cartridge. :P

I absolutely loved Lords of Thunder so last night I finally decided to download this. The music is not as good and drowned out anyway, the controls aren't as responsive and feel too heavy, and the difficulty is high but not in a good way—I found it a lot less fair than LoT. I'll put a few more hours into it but at the moment I wish I hadn't downloaded it. Maybe I'm mad for not loving it? Who knows.

koresh1959 commented on Review: Toki Tori:

I was stuck on 2-10 for quite a while, so I quit & started watching TV. About 30 minutes later, completely out of the blue, I had a "eureka" moment, quickly turned on my Wii and completed the level instantly. I think that says a lot about how engrossing the game is, because the back of my mind was working on the solution all that time.

I'd say it's a cross between Donkey Kong on the Game Boy (in regard to level design) and a simplified Zack & Wiki (what with the items). Everyone should buy this!

If they nail the gameplay like its predecessor and the price is right, this should be an automatic purchase. The artwork is fantastic.

I completed it in 2:20 and am by no means an expert gamer. But I will say it was worth the points, and I'll probably play it again some time. It was a very unique experience and it gets an 8/10 from me—definitely worth a purchase for absolutely anyone who owns a Wii.
