Kitsune_Rei commented on Review: Pokémon Link: Battle! (3DS eShop):

Looks like I'll be picking this one up! Glad to hear its a good game.
Its a shame no online multiplayer, but I guess local is better than nothing. It seems like the main game is deep enough that's what you'd mostly be playing anyway, since I doubt the online mode would unlock anything.
I'm guessing this is pretty much a game that is the equivalent of a full cartridge game, so the price isn't bad.

Still crossing my fingers Pokemon Puzzle League makes a comeback...

Kitsune_Rei commented on Club Nintendo in North America to Remove Post-...:

I mostly don't like the shortening of the survey period- sometimes it takes me more than a month to really put time into a new game, or I want to finish the game I was playing before first. I guess I need to wait to register it until I'm really playing it, but you get those bonus coins for certain new games only if you do it right away.

Is Number Battle among the games that is going to lose Wi-fi capability soon? I was thinking it'd be more appealing if I could play with a friend. Its a real shame there's no local multiplayer.

I was waiting to see what you guys said, I'm glad you rated it highly. It still seems like a game that's more about the experience than really the gameplay, but it sounds quirky and fun. I'll probably pick it up.

Kitsune_Rei commented on Review: Tappingo (3DS eShop):

I picked it up and seems great for only $3. Its a nice thoughtful diversion. I feel like I got the basic concept pretty easily, but several puzzles in I have to think so I havn't got all the concepts yet.The game is relaxing in the way of Sudoku or other thoughtful pattern games.
My only drawback is the game seems to let you cheat- I've finished a puzzle before with pieces in the wrong place, but it fit the required amount of squares for each piece. Also with the last piece, if you can get them all to satisfy their requirements for a second, then it will finish even if the piece ends up going over the number of squares its supposed to immediately after.
I'm also picking up Piccross DS because of this review :)

Kitsune_Rei commented on Pokémon Battle Trozei Is Match Three Puzzle A...:

While I'm a pretty avid puzzle gamer, the other Trozei just didn't grab me and I didn't keep it very long. At least they've tried to add something to it, but will it really be enough? Also other Pokemon side games (like Pinball and Rumble Blast) are ridiculously mean about trying to collect the Pokemon- a lot of it is random luck. I hope this doesn't hold up to that tradition as well.
I'll probably give this a shot, but I still really pine for Pokemon Puzzle League ;_; Now there's a favorite.

Kitsune_Rei commented on Level-5 Trademarks Yo-kai Watch in the US:

I personally like youkai folklore so I'm interested in this. I'm also surprised they didn't re-name it something more like "Monster Watch." Keeping it Yo-kai keeps it as more of a niche title. But maybe it'll be mostly bought by fans either way.

The demo had me hooked once and for all, though I already had it on preorder. Can't wait for this to hit. it looks like the best of classic jrpg gaming but with a fresher face.
The collector edition seems to have some really lovely bonuses so I think it seems worth it. I'm rather glad NA didn't get the statue, because frankly it doesn't look very good.

Kitsune_Rei commented on Kickstarter Research Highlights Low Delivery R...:

Kickstarter is, like many things, about being smart about where you throw your money, and not just being blinded by a great idea. Does the person have a track record? How far is it along? How much have they really searched into what their actual costs, needs, and time will be? You can kinda tell the ones that are more of a wing and a prayer versus those that the game it already half done and they have an established team and workload.
Its just like ordering something from a shady internet site versus an established one.
I have no regrets for any projects I backed, and I think they have all reached fruition or are making regular progress (granted I usually also back comics or board games or other things more than video games). You just have to go into it expecting delays. I don't hold it against them when a game dev has delays on final approvals of their games. It happens even to the regular companies.
But since video games are a much more costly and less tangible thing, I think they're more susceptible to catastrophic delays or falling apart altogether. Its just in the past you just never hear about those games.

Kitsune_Rei commented on Matters of Import: Drop Matching And Dragon Ev...:

I for one am excited for this and will be really disappointed if it doesn't reach the US. I would think we have a good shot since we have the Android/iOS version? The 3DS version looks like they basically took the gameplay I liked and made the graphics more beautiful and dropped in a smoother RPG element to it to enhance longer play sessions.

Also everyone seems to glance at the colored gem board and say "Oh another Bejeweled clone". While there is gem-matching, this game and strategy are NOTHING like Bejeweled. It took me a while to get used to. You actually hold a gem and use it to push other gems around, and then once you let go everything is set in place. You can ponder the board as long as you want, but once you lift and gem and start shifting others around, you have a limited time before the layout is set. It makes a lot of food for thought to clear as much of the board as you can in one go.

Kitsune_Rei commented on Review: SteamWorld Dig (3DS eShop):

I'd been hearing good things (and I saw my roommate playing it) so I grabbed this on sale :D Its actually cheaper than on Steam after their PC release! I think I'd prefer the 3DS interface anyway and the portability. Everyone should grab it and have no regrets! I think its one of my best holiday sale game purchases.

Kitsune_Rei commented on Review: SteamWorld: Tower Defense (DSiWare):

I like tower defense, and would like this to be good, but I just don't have the patience for something really hard. I'm not asking for a cakewalk, but I'm over games that are frustratingly hard. I'll pick a more well-rounded game.

Kitsune_Rei commented on Review: Orion's Odyssey (DSiWare):

Its a really charming little game, I wasn't a tangrams person but this game convinced me otherwise :) I love several of the characters! I don't know about anyone else, but I found several of them to be challenging- I certainly wasn't blowing through every one in one try.

Kitsune_Rei commented on Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter Releases D...:

I havn't been able to access the eShop at all for a number of days now, I think it was before Xmas, and when I tried again today it told me my region has been blocked due to how busy it was. I can wait for the Bank, I'm honestly not surprised this happened, I'm just disappointed I can't get anything else since there are some things on sale and a game I wanted to get. Also Pokemon X is telling me I have an update, but I can't do anything about it.

Kitsune_Rei commented on Puzzle & Dragons Z Shifts Almost 80% Of Its In...:

I'm really looking forward to this! I enjoy the Android game and this looks much more in-depth. I look forward to a version that is not hampered by a microtransaction scheme, although its not high pressure. Nothing wrong with mashing pokemon with a puzzle game in my book. Look how awesome Puzzle Quest was.

Waaaaant.
I recently got the app on Android, and its fun. Wow, they turned it into much more of an RPG. The app is really straightforward (also free and easy to not have to spend money on). That just makes it a lot cooler.
I also approve if more good app games get this type of treatment.

Kitsune_Rei commented on Jewel Match 3:

Hmm, no review yet, I was curious what they'd say.
So far personally I like it. Its pretty linear, but has a lot of elements I like. The main puzzling is a mix of various Bejeweled delxue features- dropping an item to the bottom, clearing off the marked spaces on the board, etc. so it will be very familiar. Their quirk is that each round has multiple boards- so far I've seen up to 4 together. The trick is you may need to clear one board to get a key to access or finish another board. There are arrows to switch between them. The difficulty is its timed (though there's an untimed option- you pick a difficulty when you make a new save game.)
Interspersed is other minigames- a hidden object like 4Elements has, as well as a arrange the puzzle pieces game. You also have to grow flowers to further your magical skills. You are trying to save the world, so as you progress you do unlock more skills to manipulate the board. You use your collected gems to restore parts of the kingdom. There is also a small item shop where you can buy extra lives, increase the gems you can hold, and more.

Overall it gets to be an odd mix, but I find it fun. I also think the graphics are above-average.

Kitsune_Rei commented on Jewel Match 3:

This actually kind of looks like a mix of Jewel Adventures and 4 Elements, both of which look rather generic but I enjoyed. I'll probably get it.
I think it only gets compared to Puzzle Quest because of the mix of puzzle and additional elements, I don't think its actually really RPGish other than having a story.

Kitsune_Rei commented on Review: Mario Party: Island Tour (3DS):

I like the core concept of Mario Party, but I can't really remember the last time I've enjoyed playing one. I guess that game just isn't for us anymore. I like to have a game to enjoy local multiplayer with friends, but this again doesn't seem worth the investment in everyone getting it to play together.

Sounds like the good old "well we don't allow that type of thing, but leave it up to the copyright holders to actually police all marketplaces and report infringements themselves rather than do something about it on our own."

Kitsune_Rei commented on First Impressions: Pokémon X & Y:

I have to say, I just feel more excitement for this game as it approaches. I wasn't excited for the B/W generation games much though I played through most of White 2 after it'd been out for a while. I'm glad I pre-ordered it.
I really hope there is a way to get all 3 starters without much hassle, because for once I like them all. Although Fennekin will be my main. I usually don't care that much about legendaries, but I'd like to get both of those too.

Also to those I keep seeing going on about hopefully the assumed "Pokemon Z" will have full 3D, I think the Black/White generation has proven it is NOT inevitable. I wouldn't judge so hard on one graphics feature until you play it yourself.

Kitsune_Rei commented on Video Games Live Will Be Releasing Its Third A...:

Awesomesauce! I was upset I missed the Kickstarter ending since I didn't see this till now, but there is an extended period you can still get in through their website!
We saw them in concert last year and it was well worth it. I really enjoyed the music to a lot of games even though I wasn't familiar with many of them, so I don't know why you'd think you won't like it if you don't know what it is.

Kitsune_Rei commented on Review: Jewel Adventures (DSiWare):

I did pick up the game and have no regrets and have faced no glitches. I loved stuff like the Puzzle Quest, so this was indeed of that genre. Its no Puzzle Quest since its more of a budget title, but for $5 I can't complain- its not as deep or shiny, but still hits that itch. As you go along, completing stages gets to have increasingly higher numbers of enemies to defeat, specific color gems to collect, or specific squares to break gems in. I really like the variety, and found I hit challenges at times but was able to get past them with a couple replays and some more focus, which puts it at just right in difficulty. (Although note the game is a LOT harder if you don't use the special skills you've unlocked through buildings. They are useful.)

My main nitpick is not being able to suspend and return later if you're in the middle of playing at all (short of just closing the lid while paused till later)- the stages are in 10 level increments and you either finish or have to start over if you want to quit out of the game. I don't find that to be a huge deal though since the stages aren't super long.

My other nitpick is I wish I could build more than 3 functional buildings, but the powers they give you are fairly good, so I would just advise reading the instructions and making sure of which ones you want before you make them as their function isn't very clear in-game. It may just be having all of them would make the game too easy so this is why you only get to build a few.

There was a complaint the puzzle area was rather small on the screen, but I found as I got further along the board kept getting bigger, until it filled up that whole area. So there's a reason for it. Ultimately there is no border space wasted.

I just wanted to put in my thoughts since I mostly disagree with the review here and think it should be rated higher- I don't want to see someone who may enjoy it pass it up. I honestly have a hard time putting it down.
