Still have this pre-downloaded and excited to play it. I wish it had a bit more of a challenge scoring system, and the game could be cheaper, but to me, it still has the feel of an AC game. The interior design is one of my favorite aspects of the main franchise. I'll take this anyday over Amiibo Party.

ericthecheese commented on Mario History: Super Mario 3D World - 2013:

When this game was unveiled at E3 2013, I was very unimpressed and disappointed. It seemed like a lazy port of 3D Land with HD graphics.

But then I played it and I really enjoyed it. Very happily surprised. I love the music in the game from start to finish, and the Cat suit and Plessie were amazing additions to the Mario Universe.

It's not the best Mario game in the storied franchise, but I don't think it's anywhere near the worst, either. I still love playing it today.

While I do understand the price point from Nintendo's stand point of profitability, but as a consumer - one that more than likely knows that the Wii U is coming to a rapid close - $300 is way too much to spend if I were "on the fence". More than likely, parents and kids do not know about the NX, but you'd be hard pressed to find someone remotely "in the know" who doesn't. I think a $250 or even $200 price point would do wonders to move systems off shelves and out of warehouses that would otherwise sit unsold at all.

ericthecheese commented on Talking Point: Assessing the Odds of Super Mar...:

Echoing here, but I think this will sell well to existing users - probably even moreso after the great NWC presentation. But as far as new users, Nintendo has undercut itself by not being able to stop talking about the NX whereas even people who don't regularly follow gaming websites know that a new system is on the way. There is no incentive for anyone to buy a Wii U at this point in time.

ericthecheese commented on Nintendo Announces Super Mario Maker Wii U Har...:

I wish the console or gamepad itself had some kind of special marking on it for Mario's Anniversary to make it really a Limited Edition... but Nintendo probably has a number of Wii U consoles already in surplus.

That said, still excited for this game!

I really don't understand the outrage of SMM coming out on 9/11. I can see a point about a big festive release party in downtown Manhattan, but it's been 14 years since 9/11/01. And I don't say that because I'm saying we should get over it. I say that because we've had movies, books, music, and more have release dates of 9/11 since then. I don't see why Nintendo gets singled out when we've had stuff come out on that date since 2001.

I love SEGA and still love them. They constantly release great 3D Classics on the 3DS, and their mobile offerings and rereleases of games like Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio on Xbox Live and PSN have been good as well.

I'm glad they recognize that they have not been pleasing long term fans and have been faltering. That's the first step. Now, I hope that the second step is actually following through and repairing the trust that was damaged by games like Sonic Boom.

I'm willing to give them a chance because I love their brand and franchises.

@Quorthon This E3 was pretty awful, but I still think 2008 was the worst of all time as far as Nintendo goes. From that awkward woman prattling on about her vacation to the embarrassing Wii Music finale, that was the worst in my opinion. This past E3 was merely very disappointing. E3 2008 was humiliating.

ericthecheese commented on Rumour: Nintendo NX Won't Be As Powerful As Pl...:

I'll say it again. Nintendo needs to make the NX to be competitive with the PS4 and Xbox One... at the very least. If they push out hardware in either late 2016 (which I hope is when it's due out) or 2017 and is already inferior to systems that have been out since 2013, Nintendo will further alienate themselves from the gamers that they need support from.

The last two console cycles, Nintendo has been behind its competitors from the get-go as far as horsepower. So even though this is a rumor, it is a very believable one. And if they go that route again, this could be Nintendo's last home console if sales continue to decline. The Wii U has proven that Nintendo can't survive just based on their die hards.

ericthecheese commented on Video: Chill Out With Tetris Trivia, the Sovie...:

Absolutely love Tetris. I've had a ton of games throughout the series:

Tetris (GB)
Tetris (NES)
Tetris 2 (SNES)
Tetris Attack (SNES)
Disney's Magical Tetris (N64)
Tetris Plus (Sega Saturn)
Tetris Worlds (GameCube)
Tetris DS (Nintendo DS)
Tetris (PS3)
Tetris: Evolution (Xbox 360)
Tetris Party Deluxe (Wii)
Tetris (GB, 3DS VC)
Tetris: Axis (3DS)

Yeah, I'm a fan. I say I won't buy anymore versions, but then I do.

ericthecheese commented on Rumour: Nintendo NX Won't Be As Powerful As Pl...:

I hope this isn't the case, but wouldn't be surprised at all as Nintendo's last two home consoles have been underpowered compared to the competition. The Wii skated by because of its innovation, whereas the Wii U struggled because of the lack of it. If word gets out that NX is indeed less powerful than the PS4 - which will have been out for a number of years by then - the buzz around Nintendo will be very negative ... unless they bring forth an innovation like the Wii did.

For those who say power doesn't matter, it most certainly does, in both the eyes of the prospective buyer who abandoned Nintendo as well as the industry and third parties themselves. Nintendo has proven with the Wii U that it cannot survive on the backs on their die hard fanbase alone.

ericthecheese commented on Feature: What If The SNES PlayStation Had Actu...:

I shudder to think what would have happened if this ended up existing. Sony would have never forged ahead with the PlayStation when they did - when the market was ripe for it - and we would have missed out on some great games and franchises.

ericthecheese commented on We Can't Release Virtual Console Games Any Fas...:

I don't believe any of this article. There are, without a doubt, some licensing issues with some titles, but there is no excuse for why the Virtual Console - especially on 3DS - has dried up to barely a trickle. We are lucky to get one release a month on Wii U, but the 3DS hasn't had a VC release in months. I refuse to believe that porting NES games or Game Boy games to the 3DS is such an ordeal that it would pull so many resources from other game development.

ericthecheese commented on Rumour: Nintendo NX Shipping This Time Next Ye...:

@Nintend0ro Nintendo, and other companies, always say that their next console isn't a "replacement" for the current one, but we all know it will be over time. Companies always support the older systems for a window of time after the new one comes out (also depending on how successful the previous one was) as evidenced that the 360 and PS3 are still getting support - even moreso than the Wii U at the point. But I imagine Nintendo will quickly drop support for Wii U once the NX comes out. They barely support it now with its almost empty 2016 calendar. With not even 10 million sold in over two and a half years, they really have no reason to as they dropped support for the Wii very quickly and we all know how that console sold.

ericthecheese commented on Rumour: Nintendo NX Shipping This Time Next Ye...:

@LilC 2016 would be a four year lifespan if it came out for the holiday. That's only a year less than much more successful Nintendo home consoles of the past, like the Super NES (1991-1996), N64 (1996-2001) and GameCube (2001-2006). And given how miserably the Wii U has done so far, four years is much better than the Saturn (1995-1998) and the similarly-selling Dreamcast (1999-2002). I don't expect Wii U to have a five year lifespan just because I don't think Nintendo can wait that long to launch another home console while the U continues to fall further and further behind.

ericthecheese commented on Reminder: North American Club Nintendo Rewards...:

I whittled my coin balance down to 10 coins back when they trotted out the last wave of North American awards. Pretty good, actually. I thought I'd be losing a lot more than that.

I'm surprised some people thought they would announce a successor at E3. I never thought they would do so, especially since Club Nintendo technically is still operational until the end of this month. I predict it will be announced either by this holiday season, or just before the launch of NX.

ericthecheese commented on Reaction: The Concept of eShop 'Early Access' ...:

All Nintendo said is that they are looking into it. That's all. I think they are taking a lot of the criticism of their behind-the-times online networking and infrastructure too much to heart and considering all sorts of options in a wild grab to try and appease the masses and look more cutting edge. They need to focus on building out a unified account system with legit cross buys and more before thinking about early access to anything.

I can tell it's going to be a lonnnnng year of rumors and stuff until we get some real details leaked about NX, which probably won't be until next Spring. haha

ericthecheese commented on Feature: The Biggest Wii U Retail Games of 201...:

I voted for Fatal Frame only because I know it won't be a huge vote getter, and I'm pretty unhappy how Nintendo gave it the shaft during E3 week, aside from one Treehouse presentation. Completely ignored in all of their release calendars.

I'm also looking forward to Super Mario Maker.
