djshep1973 commented on Talking Point: Nintendo Arcade Games on Virtua...:

How's about Nintendo (especially NoE) just listening to the numerous fan-sites, and all the fan-requests for games we'd like to pay to download???

Like many have said, this is free money for them! (especially all the first-party games that must be so high on so many game lists....)

djshep1973 commented on Talking Point: Nintendo Arcade Games on Virtua...:

I'd definitely be interested in seeing these titles being released as arcade versions on the VC, but I really don't see that much hope of it happening; there's already a lot of games, really key games for me, that just don't seem to be being released here in Europe, and I'm just losing faith in NoE's ability to keep the VC alive with such titles.

I guess what I mean is that, though there is a clear demand and appetite for the release of many classic VC titles, Nintendo just seems content to provide us with shovel-ware via Wii-Ware - not that all WW games are bad, but they do seem intent on just allowing any old crap to be published there, and all the while, the VC is taking a back-seat.

I can't remember the last time I got excited about a Friday, despite plenty of articles in Q3 last year on here implying that the near future looked good for plenty of retro and retro-related downloads; this isn't this site's fault of course, just wishful thinking on my part.

But yeah, I'd love to see these games become available as arcades, and plenty more besides!

djshep1973 commented on Sony Boss: All Your Sales Are Belong To Us, Ni...:

This sort of statement by a company boss is a bit sad at the best of times, even though there might be a smidge of truth to some of what he says; having said that I absolutely love my PS3, just as much as I love my Wii, and I do know a few people that have taken advantage of the recent price cuts of Sony's system.

I'd say there's plenty of room for all 3 current consoles to be fair, and for the hardcore, it wouldn't be crazy to expect that many of them own 2 of the 3 already.

djshep1973 commented on Make Miyamoto Smile: Show StarFox Love:

Hmmmm, let's see.. the original Super Mario games were platformers, and they managed to keep making subsequent ones in the same mould (ie. as platformers) and they continued to be successful...

I can't help but think that if they'd kept Star Fox in the shoot-em-up genre then it would still be successful too... I'd still be interested in playing any new games, if they were a lot closer to the original format anyways!

This game looks top...

I haven't played all the way through the original yet, but I certainly feel inspired to go and do so now, before downloading this sequel! Thanks for the excellent review by the way Marcel, nice one.

djshep1973 commented on Review: Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 1 (Wii...:

I've got to say, I'm very disappointed with this WiiWare release. I just spent 1000 points on a release that doesn't just feel rushed, but also buggy and of poor quality. It's feels like Tell-Tale have just banged it out hesto-presto to cash in on some Wii business, where they should have made damn sure that things like frame-rate issues are kept to a minimum. Having just waded through the first puzzle (as noted above, a choppy ocean scene), I couldn't believe how basic and unattractive the 3D modelling looks. I know it's 'only' a Wii, but come on; you might be able to forgive a skippy framerate if the graphics themselves looked pretty, but I'm sorry those found in the WW conversion of this just don't. Instead I'm stuck with a game that freezes now and then (has it crashed?? oh, no, it's back again..), and at times just feels so clumsy as to feel rather less playable than it should.

Having decided to at least buy the first chapter of this on Wii, despite having read most of what has been said above, I thought I should at least judge it for myself. Suffice to say that unless I hear drastically improved news for the future chapters I won't be wasting my money on them. It would be nice to think that TTG might read all the comments on this page and put more effort into optimising any further Wii releases they make, and while I'm at it they owe those of us that have paid for it an apology for such shoddy work.

Really disappointed. Would also have expected this site to have reviewed the WW version too, especially as there seems to be such a difference in quality between this one and the PC original.

I know it hasn't been announced or anything, but the thought of an update to Salamander gets me excited .. mmmmmmm, Salamander Rebirth.... lol

I'd also love to see a Castlevania Rebirth as well, that could be awesome!

djshep1973 commented on Nintendo Download: Hanabi Festival 4, Gradius ...:

Just downloaded Gradius Rebirth after what seemed like a very long wait - as a long-time Gradius fan I can say it's well worth 600 points, though I'd probably have been happy paying 1000 for it! I really like it's retro styling, and have completely enjoyed what I've played of it so far.

Also got Bit-Boy, and this also seems like a decent game, especially for 600 points. This is a really good update, more of the same please Nintendo! :-D

This looks like a lot of fun, but does anyone know if it has a colour-blind mode? The screen grab for the title banner above would suggest that it does (patterns within the bubbles), but does this make the game playable for people like myself?

djshep1973 commented on Review: Space Harrier (Virtual Console Arcade):

Fair score I'd say, I was thinking 5 or 6/10 as I was reading the review - and I'd pretty much agree with most of it. Although I probably won't play it that much, I am kind of glad I downloaded it, just as it's a decent chunk of my childhood there. I used to love hearing the speech booming out of the cabinet across the arcade I used to go in!

Here's hoping this VC Arcade release is a good omen that we might see Afterburner and Outrun on the VCA too. :-D

djshep1973 commented on Round Table: Are Nintendo Neglecting the 'Hard...:

Wow, interesting discussion..

I'd have always said that I was really happy with Nintendo's support of the Wii, especially as they seem to have updated most of the series' that I have been interested in playing - SMB, Zelda, Mario Kart - but I have to admit that since I bought a PS3 a couple of months ago I've barely touched my Wii.

I'm sure I'll get round to getting back into the vast array of VC titles I have, and into completing Galaxy, Metroid Prime and Mario Kart Wii, but at the moment I am really enjoying playing a lot of games that aren't available for Wii.

For as much as I do really like my Wii and the majority of games that Nintendo release for it, I do also find it very frustrating that so much harmful and cynically released shovel-ware has been made available for it too. Wii-Ware has in particular seen some truly horrendous releases, the sort of games that really could only appeal to the sort of gamer who has been completely sheltered from what most of us would call 'a good game' - if that doesn't sound daft. Mindless waggling and irrelevant gesturing can surely only be considered fun for so long. I think the evident abundance of unpolished and frankly shoddy games being released for the Wii has played a large part in the damaging of Wii's reputation as a console that is capable of quality gaming.

I've probably gone way off topic here, but I guess my answer to the actual question here would be to agree with many other posters - I don't think there's really such a thing as a 'hardcore gamer' as the definition of this seems to be so broad. I guess it's all relative anyway; I'm a lot more hardcore than, say, my wife, but I haven't actually completed a game in years. But I do love games, have done so for more than 20 years, and will probably be playing them for significant chunks of time for the rest of my life; and I hope there's always going to be a Nintendo around to make the sorts of games that I continue to find fun.

I am sooooooooo getting this when it is released in Europe! I'd say the Nemesis / Gradius franchise is probably my favourite of all time, so on reading that this edition is something of a retro-styled mish-mash, I will now start impatiently waiting for the chance to buy it...

Then I can get back to waiting for Axelay to get a European release! :-D :-D

Wow, great review; a really interesting read and I'd say I agree with pretty much everything that Marcel has commented on. Maybe not a 9/10 for me, but a definite 8/10, though I've probably not put as much time into playing it as he has, lol..

Well worth 1000 points anyway! :-D

djshep1973 commented on Virtual Console Reviews - Best of 2008:

I'll join in with a big Happy New Year everyone!!!

Got to say, as far as top 5 lists go, this one had way too many RPG's in it (man, they just take up too much time!) .. my list would be:

5) 1080 Snowboarding
4) Castlevania III
3) Metal Slug
2) Gradius II
1) Mayhem in Monsterland

So how's that for a different list? Works for me!! :-D

(I'd agree that Paper Mario is better than SMRPG as well...)

Wow, this is great news - if it does indeed happen of course! :-D I guess all I'd be waiting for now, in a catch-up kinda way is Axelay, which will come out some time I'm sure!

Having read all the various comments and complaints on this website for a while now, and having seen what sorts of games get released in each of the territories, I guess the only people that really do have anything to gripe about are those in Australasia - wouldn't it be really cool if they got some nice exclusives sometime? (or at least some of the C64 games, etc..)

djshep1973 commented on USA VC Update: Boogerman:

Okay, so NA only got a single VC game this week, but they also got 2 WiiWare games as well. I'm sorry that none of the games released were what you'd call 'A' list titles, but do some of the people complaining on here really have the sort of cash that they can afford to buy all the games that get released every week, such that they feel really disappointed when they simply don't want all or any of them?

Perhaps some of the complainers should just play some of the other really good games that have come out recently, or get on with enjoying the vast array of games they probably already have instead of belly-aching that certain games they do want haven't already come out. FFS I'm still waiting on plenty of games coming over here that the rest of the world has had for ages, but I'll wait for them and enjoy them all the more when they do finally get released.

Like I said, there's still plenty of great stuff that I already have and am enjoying a great deal.

djshep1973 commented on World of Goo Coming to WiiWare in Europe!:

This is such great news! It was a bit unfair to make Europe a) wait so long and b) pay rather more for it, even with the extra content - and it was a bit crazy that North America wouldn't have had access to the 'complete' game either.

All that remains now I guess is for some kind of announcement on the proposed extra level as some DLC, that'd be ace!

Many thanks to 2D Boy!! :-D

'online skill difference between the US and Europe won't be that big!'

Well, we've probably all played Tetris to death at some point, so I don't see any amount of delay in release having owt to do with skill gaps, this is one game I will be playing online for sure. :-D

Hmmmm.. of the myriad of computers and consoles we had when I was a kid, we never actually had a C64, though we always wanted one and probably bought one of the C64 magazines every month anyway! Some of the great looking games I remember wanting to play would have to include Summer Games / WInter Games, Last Ninja, IK+, Combat School, Paradroid and any of the shoot-em-ups like Sanxion, Delta, etc. If any of this stuff made it's way, I'd be very happy indeed! :) :)

Great article, couldn't agree more. It seems to me that, really, the Wii has more relevant issues to contend with, certainly with regard to the VC and the forthcoming WiiWare content - storage space!

It's down to the same old nut again really - and this applies to games you aren't sure about on the VC as well - if you don't want it, don't buy it. I think being given the choice to pay for additional content for a game is a great thing, and I'll probably partake if I'm interested in the game and I think it's good value.

What's up with all the whinging and whining?? Whilst I agree that it is a bit of a shame that we aren't getting more than one game-a-week these days, nobody says that you have to buy the games that are coming out. If you're not interested then save your points, be thankful for the stuff that is online, and play the games you already have!

To be honest, once I'd downloaded the games I really wanted, I wasn't interested in a lot of the games that were coming out at the 3-a-week rate anyways.

As for this week, I'm sure plenty of people don't like shoot-em-ups, but I love 'em so will rejoice in what looks like a cracker! :-)
