As far as those who gripe about Nintendo's inability to market a product, at this point the company has been successfully selling video games & consoles for well over 30 years now so just the mere mention of a new product will have people talking based on word of mouth. Besides, how often have you seen a commercial on TV for one of their products? The answer is few and far between because they don't need it anymore. You go in a game store and you'll see an ad, what more do they have to do?

Personally, I would have preferred the smaller N3DS with the faceplates but since I was offered the Majora's Mask N3DSXL I was content. With that said, I feel like this is Nintendo going the cheap route when it comes to buying shelf space and added production costs to stock the faceplates in NA. I don't really think it has anything to do with simplifying the choices for the consumer because I can't honestly believe that Nintendo disregards the number in sales they have garnered here. At least I'd like to think that. I think they looked at how bad the Amiibo situation has gone down since they released and made decision based on supply & demand and felt they could not stock both systems adequately at launch figuring they could appease the core consumers by launching the larger unit in attempt to avoid the already bad PR they have with Amiibos. Obviously, just the opposite happened. I feel like if they would have just released the smaller one with the faceplates (which I would have bought), we wouldn't be having this discussion. Yet you'd still have people complaining that they weren't given a choice in the matter despite getting what is the more preferred option overall.

@Chubblings While I agree with your logic, I feel like Nintendo is just dragging it's feet on moving forward with the franchises base games. I'm really tired of the same old format of catch/train/gym and I just need more out of the series than simply adding little mini games and gadgets (and rehashes of previous games) to try and keep the attention of the player. I like they they have finally broken themselves of the top-down view but it took them almost 20 years to do so. I understand that the game is meant to cater to younger games as an introductory to the typical RPG format but I think they are discounting the intelligence of the average child in todays society.

I'm sure I am on the lower end of the spectrum but I feel like the Pokemon formula is getting stale. Mind you, I have play every generation in the series sans Black/White 2 so my opinion isn't fair weather. I just feel like games like Ni no Kuni have taken the genre to another level and I don't see why Nintendo can't do the same.
Not to mention, Nintendo should have capitalized on this whole Virtual Action Figure market with Pokemon well before Amiibo was announced. Just my 2 cents.

After the Skylanders and Disney Infinity craze having been around for a while now, I feel like we're coming close to the end of it. As a parent who has invested quite the bit of money in them, the stuff is starting to take up a lot of real estate in my home and game stores not offering credit for trade-ins on them really sucks. With that said, I'm very on the fence that Amiibo is going to take off and sustain momentum without some serious incentive on Nintendo's part. One thing that could drive these sales would be Nintendo offering Amiibo figure specific in-game DLC for the games they are compatible with (like an unlockable stage or outfit/kart). So as soon as you connect your Amiibo for the first time, it unlocks said item.

The REAL story here is Nintendo bringing back the 18-card game case in a ZELDA & Animal Crossing theme (400 Coins)! You best believe I'm all over that!
The game selection is pretty lackluster sans F-Zero. I'm hoping Earthbound makes to Club Nintendo one day.
