As a long Nintendo fan I have to say what most Nintendo fans need to understand!! Nintendo have done a remarkable job fending off mega competition from companies that think nothing of releasing loss making hardware in order to disrupt the market. If the Wii was not the Wii I do not think Nintendo could have survived as they are now. Microsoft and Sony's business models have always been based on market penetration not necessarily profitablity. Unlike Nintendo. Imagine if Apple entered the market with a plan to conquer. Sony and Microsoft could potentially be exposed to Apple's massive financial strength. Sony and Microsoft can afford to diversify in other areas and throw money at thier consoles regardless, Nintendo do not have that luxury. Gaming is the only business they are in and that is why with two such heavy weights wanting more and more, they cannot possibly compete on a product for profit basis. That is the real issue, competition! When the PS4 and the Next box are released they will probably be devoid of real gaming innovation both software and hardware, however they will be welcomed by the media and gadget freaks as the 'true next generation'. Nintendo must (and I believe they are) postion themselves for change. The Gamecube had a relatively small installed base but it was profitable and a great gaming device. The Wii U will achieve that level of sales as a minimum (most likely surpass it) and prove to be profitable. I think that is all Nintendo can expect in this generation. They must invest their massive reserves and rise like a phoenix transformed into......
