The backtracking and essential need for very well hidden items from earlier levels make this game too much of a slog. It's a damn shame because when it flows it's great - but life's too short for games that require you to keep a constant eye on a walkthrough.
Loved all the others - really disappointed by this.
"constant meandering, backtracking and item juggling" was taken to an artform in Paper Mario Sticker Star and it got an 8. And cost four times more than this.
You can add me to the "strongly disagree" list. I'd urge people not to skip the game based on this review.
If you want to see REALLY bad backtracking, then look at Paper Mario Sticker Star. The Cave is nowhere near as bad as that. It's also quirky and funny with a real Monkey Island vibe.
It may not be that much to "upgrade" VC games, but we've only had prices for NES/SNES - we can assume the N64 games will cost more ($4 maybe?)
The irony is that the people who've already spent the most will have to pay out the most - that's hardly fair. With 50+ VC games, I'm looking at $100ish, that's too much to upgrade games I've already bought once (or more than once, in the case of many of the N64 titles).

Still seems a bit harsh to give it a 6.
