benportugal commented on Emulation Experts M2 Worked With Nintendo On W...:

Well at least there's someone there actually working on emulation now. To me it's bizarre and inexcusable that the Wii U didn't launch with a full VC library including all the games that were available on the Wii VC.

The fact it didn't is nothing to do with the difficulty in porting the games. There are plenty of competent emulators for these systems that play the games perfectly, and they've been available for years.

It's more a question of trickling releases out to fill gaps and generate excitement about things we really shouldn't be so excited about - like the release of SNES Mario Kart. Yes, it's great to be able to experience the nostalgia, but giving us that nostalgia is effortless and free of cost to Nintendo.

I'm no less excited about the game....BUT....WHY develop a split screen console and not include a way for two players to use one screen each - i.e. one on gamepad and one on the TV? There's simply no excuse.

Nintendo really seem to have problems these days. There's something that defies belief in everything they do: i.e. no N64 Virtual Console on Wii U when they had it on Wii (and yes, I know I can still access them via the Wii emulation cos I went through the painful migration process).

As I say, I'm still very excited about this game - it's a new Mario Kart, after all. But I keep waiting for Nintendo to properly WOW me with the Wii U. I'd secretly hoped they'd silence the doubters with something truly amazing like 8 new cups AND 8 retro cups AND the promise of DLC. It's time for them to go above and beyond with something instead of constantly making long term Nintendo fans go "eh?"

benportugal commented on Review: Paper Mario: Sticker Star (3DS):

The backtracking and essential need for very well hidden items from earlier levels make this game too much of a slog. It's a damn shame because when it flows it's great - but life's too short for games that require you to keep a constant eye on a walkthrough.

Loved all the others - really disappointed by this.

Still seems a bit harsh to give it a 6.

"constant meandering, backtracking and item juggling" was taken to an artform in Paper Mario Sticker Star and it got an 8. And cost four times more than this.

You can add me to the "strongly disagree" list. I'd urge people not to skip the game based on this review.

If you want to see REALLY bad backtracking, then look at Paper Mario Sticker Star. The Cave is nowhere near as bad as that. It's also quirky and funny with a real Monkey Island vibe.

It may not be that much to "upgrade" VC games, but we've only had prices for NES/SNES - we can assume the N64 games will cost more ($4 maybe?)

The irony is that the people who've already spent the most will have to pay out the most - that's hardly fair. With 50+ VC games, I'm looking at $100ish, that's too much to upgrade games I've already bought once (or more than once, in the case of many of the N64 titles).
