I really like the app. I wish it had an option for communities and to send challenges to people you're not friends with (yet). But beside of that it's a really great experience.
I also hope they repeat the challenges some time. Maybe even after the full game launched. I haven't been able to unlock all the expert challenges and won't even find the time to really delve into a lot of the regular daily ones.
Will download some pinball tables. Also cautiously interested in Publisher Dream. PS: Does anyone know if Mega Man will be the 60Hz version of the game?
Will be interesting to see if this has any influence on the prices. Personally for eShop only games over 20€ i'd prefer to have a download card to have at least something physical. But how much that would be worth to me i don't know.
I should add that after a few weeks with my Wii U it truly wouldn't be the same without the GamePad. It really gives the system some special feeling.
I hope many games will use it in good and clever ways so that my great first experiences don't get overshadowed by thoughts of so much wasted potential in the next months and years. (I'm not so naive to think multiplatform games will make the best use of the GamePad though. That'll probably only happen when the devs tailor-make the game for Wii U.)
PS: I also applaud Nintendo Land's take on Pikmin, the co-op aspects are great. I just don't enjoy the neverending tapping very much.
PPS: So many people said the Wii was too casual. Seems to me that now just as many say Nintendo Land is too complicated. I don't think it is. If you just let yourself in for it you might enjoy it a lot more than you thought you wold.
For a better price and with the right marketing i could see the GamePad appeal to nearly everyone out there who likes to play with others. Hopefully there soon'll be a wider range of exceptional single-player experiences too.
Woah, this must be one of the most thoroughly written articles i've ever seen here.
Anyway, i'm really surprised how alive the GamePad seems to be on its own. I know it just streams from the console, but it's nearly like its own little handheld.
I only really played Nintendo Land and the ZombiU demo with it so far. I don't plan to use it in Chasing Aurora's single-player (not much use except for off-screen play), am playing Little Inferno with the Wiimote since it's more relaxing that way. The same can be said for the Wiimote and Nunchuk option in "Sonic Allstars". So i'm very glad that option's still there and wouldn't mind games that go for Motion+ and Nunchuk controls and completely ignore the GamePad (especially shooters). Don't put it in where it doesn't make sense, it's as easy as that really.
There were a few things not so intuitive in the ZombiU demo like using the scanner when i just wanted to aim. And for a while i always tried to look around with the gyro after using the scanner. If i was just a casual player i guess i'd have given up shortly after that. (And that's what gaming has to overcome, unintuitive controls should not be the reason for people to lose interest in a game.)
The co-op and single-player games in Nintendo Land are pure controlling and showcasing genius though. I wish more games would be designed that way. Imo they're just intuitive enough while providing for a nice amount of depth that challenges but doesn't really frustrate too much.
Of course it's harder to know what to do than it was in Wii Sports, but that game (while nice) was too shallow for me. Gaming lives off gameplay highlights and these weren't really found in Wii Sports imo. The game got harder the longer you played but it didn't really get too different.
Which brings me to Zelda Battle Quest. That's by far the most impressive demonstration of how co-op can profit from the GamePad. (Metroid Blast is good too, but not as effective as the Zelda game imo.) The different roles you have to play to succeed really make you feel special instead of just player one ,player two and so on. That's something that couldn't been done this well before i think.
A dream come true would be a clever co-op game with a hacker on the GamePad and a shooter on Wiimote + Nunchuk (and vice versa while the shooter's on the back of pickup that the hacker drives). That would be an experience i wouldn't wanna miss.
The Wiimote was and is genius in its versatility, i love holding it as a NES controller, using it on its own, in the Zapper or together with the Nunchuk.
All in all i hope the touch-screen controls of the GamePad will make complex games comfier to play. Dedicated buttons might be important for the most frequent actions in games, but the rest is easier to do and understand as a GamePad command imo.
Says the man who just made two Mickey Mouse games.
But seriously, games have their own strengths and shouldn't try to just copy movies. If you don't advertise to people with an interest above the usual stereotypes, you're not going to sell these games.
Personally, i love both. Games that only exist to be pure fun and the more thought-provoking ones. To me the setting doesn't matter. It's more important that they don't feel too forced and superimposed.
And i disagree about the whole Zombie thing being childish. It might not be used well often but they are an effect of mankind doing wrong and offer enough room for the main protagonists to reflect on what they personally have done wrong that contributed to the situation. "Lowlifes" as characters also have potential to tell some misunderstood outsider stories that make us "normals" look awfully stupid.
While it sure looks like a unusual game and may never rise to the heights of western sales the Sims and Animal Crossing games are getting i still think there could be cash in here. They could release a demo version and base their decision on a localisation on the reactions. If they decide to go for it there could be another demo shortly before release to remind people of the game. Anyway, i hope they really research its chances in the West and not just approach it with an "this would never work"-attitude from the get-go. I like to believe this game could do well in the west. Especially with the possibility to make it a 20$ eShop release.
Thanks for the list! All downloaded now. Anyway, i hope the great minds of the company will find good new dev homes and bring the fire they had in their glorious point & click days. Now the only way to truly celebrate their legacy would be to bring all of their amazing adventure games to the Wii U.
Even if this came to the eShop i'd be cautious. While it still could turn out decent enough for a download this will so tank at retail. It's not like the more polished Scribblenauts games suddenly vanish from the earth, you know.
From what i read so far it sounds like a deeper, more RPG-ish approach to Animal Crossing. It sounds and looks great so far so i really hope it makes it to the West.
I've been surprised that Advance Wars wasn't an Ambassador game on the 3DS. It would have been a great opportunity to introduce that series to a bit of a wider audience.
If you care about the Wii U you bring a new game to the platform and make great use of the system's unique features. Anyway, still loooking forward to this game with cautious optimism.
You heard the stupid gaffe yesterday about the Wii U. If someone wants to take Unreal Engine 4 and ship a game on Wii U, they can! If they wanna ship an Unreal Engine 4 game on Xbox 360, they could make it happen.
This once again shows that when you purchase a home console game you should be able to play it on the go without any additional costs. Take a leaf, VC!
The update to LetterBox is long overdue. Nice it's coming, i didn't believe they'd ever work on it again. Anyway, i'm definitely getting Puddle, Shock Troopers 2 a bit later on, am waiting for reviews on the very promising Toki Tori 2 and hope this week's 3DS eShop games will be good.
I just hope they're ready when the interest in the current blockbusters is waning. Without huge titles dedicated game consoles may not appeal to a lot of people anymore. Before that happens i hope all the great devs have something creative up their sleeves.
Nice article. Luigi's still discriminated in some of the newer Mario platformers where you can play as him. His limelight-hogging bro gets to collect all the important coins and stars leaving the poor little greeny with nothing more than an assistant's role over again.
Man, this looks so fun. While i'm not a big fan of buying heaps of eShop cash before i need to ... if this is the only way to get this fun stuff to the West so be it.
The simpler the basic process the easier it is to catch their interest. But i hope the Wii U will only see good quality ports and inspire them to do something that can only be done on this system.
Bring the original to the Wii U and we'll talk. As a 1:1 port on the eShop for under 20€ or as a remastered boxed version for a bit more. I don't think i could resist.
