aphexbr commented on You Won't Pull Any Wii-lies on This Bike!:

Could be good. Not everyone lives in a place where they can use an actual bike easily (ever tried biking through, for example, the centre of London? Most of us prefer to live, thanks), and home equipment removes the risk of difficult weather or time constraints that stop people using the gym.

This is better than a standard exercise bike (more to do), and the fact it's a controller rather than tied to one game is a great bonus. It all depends on how well it works with other games and the price, but it's promising. If it's crappy and costs $300+, it'll fail, but otherwise it would work.

aphexbr commented on Call of Duty Comparison Shots Don't Do The Wii...:

Meh, whatever. If you're expecting COD to look as good on the Wii as it does on 360/PS3, you're a drooling idiot. Go buy an HD platform if graphics bother you that much.

What matters is whether it runs smoothly, has the gameplay intact and uses graphics that are at least as good as a high quality Gamecube release. That's all that can be asked, and Activision seem to be delivering on that front.

aphexbr commented on Excitebots Crashes Out At Retail:

Yeah, I'll agree with the above. The game doesn't seem to have had much marketing outside of reviews, and on first glance it does look like a crappy MK ripoff. It looks like the bargain bin games that some poor kid gets given when their parents can't afford a new game...

Glad to hear it's better than that and I might give it a shot on rental, but it just doesn't look all that inspiring to anyone who owns Mario Kart already.

aphexbr commented on Details Emerge on Ju-on Game:

@Objection_Blaster: See the original. That goes for every movie that's had a crappy American remake, be it REC (Quarantine), The Ring, The Eye, Bangkok Dangerous, Infernal Affairs (The Departed), Shutter, Pulse, A Tale Of Two Sisters (The Uninvited), etc... American remakes suck the cultural context out of most of the movies and exist purely for people who are allergic to reading. Intelligent people can usually get more out of the original versions.

As for Ju-On, yeah I liked the movies so I'm looking forward to the game...

(looks in the living room, sees a 360 and a Wii next to each other under the TV, no PS3 in sight....)

Yeah... I might buy a PS3 when they're cheap and God Of War 3 is cheap. Else, nah. I have no need for it, and making ignorant statements isn't going to change my mind.

aphexbr commented on Ten Arcade Games We'd Like To See On The Virtu...:

For me, half the crappy arcade conversions (e.g. Splatterhouse) should have the original versions available... no excuse for not having games I've been able to play on MAME for 10 years already!

I'd most like to see Aliens, Shadow Dancer, the Double Dragon series, OutRun, Afterburner, the R-Type series, Flying Shark, Prehistoric Isle, Pang, Klax, Chase HQ, Plotting and a bunch of others I'm probably forgetting now...

OK, I'm confused. I had a game called Salamander on the ZX Spectrum, and it looks like this one despite what the review says. Anyone know if this is the same one?

"You'll only get a "starter pack", and you have to buy the rest of the game's levels for a total of 1500 Wii Points (3 packs of 500 Points each)."

...and that's why I'm not going to be buying the Space Invaders game! Way to price yourselves out of the market, idiots! Alien Crush Returns looks pretty cool though...

"I am hoping for Chrono Trigger or Mother 1 or 2, yet I do not wasnt to whine about that.."

Forget it guys, Chrono Trigger is getting a DS remake soon so you have as much chance of getting that on VC as FF 1-6 - not much...

aphexbr commented on TurboGrafx-16 Releases - September:

Wow... I was going to buy some more credits soon to get Mario RPG, Splatterhouse 2 and Cybernoid... Looks like I'll have to buy more for Ys!

I would go for Chase HQ, but I'll skip it as it's supposedly a shoddy port. I still have no idea why ports are used when the Wii's perfectly capable of MAME-style arcade emulation :S

aphexbr commented on Nintendo Responds To US Release Date Queries:

An even better question would be why do they obscure future release dates to such a degree. We're hardly talking about software that has to be created here - with a few exceptions, they're emulating games that already exist. Testing might take a while, but why can't they publish release schedules for the next month or 2? They must know what their own schedule is, so why not share it?

The reason people are so pissed off is not just that a release date has been broken, but they don't know if there's any other decent games to look forward to...

aphexbr commented on EU VC Update - International Karate +:

Jeez, you guys can be hard to please... 3 games, 1 of them a true classic, and you still complain! IK+ is one of the best fighters ever, and it's only 500 points. I'd rather have that than 5 mediocre games.

aphexbr commented on World Of Goo Will Not Be Released On WiiWare I...:

Yeah, makes no sense. World Of Goo looks like one of those games you might drop €10 or 15 for on a boring night and have a lot of fun with. But walk into a store and pay €30 - 60 for when it's on the shelf next to Mario, Smash Bros and Metroid? Highly unlikely.

RTL also shoot themselves in foot with this announcement in other regions. It's announcing "hey guys, you only get half the game" to US and Japan and encouraging chipping / grey imports for people who really want the full version.

"maybe Europeans haven’t taken to downloading games en masse yet or are more attached to games cases and artwork"

Bullsh*t. WiiWare is a disaster in Europe. We only have half the number of releases as the US store (according to this site's details, only 1 extra game released since launch), the games are more expensive (1000 points is between $15 and $20 US, depending if you're in the EU or UK, so up to double the price) and I've not seen the service advertised outside of Wii updates. As soon as more games hit and more people know about them, we'll probably buy more.

aphexbr commented on Cybernoid: The Fighting Machine:

Yeah I remember this one, pretty good though i can't remember if I preferred this or the sequel on the Spectrum. This was designed by Raffaele Cecco, one of my favourite old school game designers who also did Exolon, Stormlord and First Samurai.

@BassX0: yeah, probably a good idea to check the game out before blasting it for being something it's not. At least check out a video - it's clearly a flip screen exploration game with some shooting elements, not a shooter.

aphexbr commented on Where In The World Is Pop?:

sigh yet another reason why regionalisation of games is utterly idiotic. Why should native English speakers from the UK / Ireland / NZ / AU /etc. have to wait so that docs can be translated into languages they will never look at? Not to mention people from Scandinavia, etc. who probably will be using the English option anyway.

I can understand the need to translate for certain countries but it would be nice to have the choice. Why not based the regionalisation on the Wii location / languge settings and let people with English language Wiis have the game in their langauge? People who really want the translations can wait, meanwhile less complaints and more money from people who want the English version anyway...

aphexbr commented on EU VC Release - 23rd May - Paradroid:

I remember playing a remake of Paradroid called (I think) Paradroid 1990 on the Atari ST - same gameplay, far better graphics that really helped me get into the game. While the C64 original is a classic, I struggle to get into it after having played the newer version first. I'm hoping for some more 16-bit gaming so the Amiga or ST version can be put on the VC...

aphexbr commented on US VC Releases - 5th May - Pokemon Puzzle League:

I'd agree the Pokemon game is a bit disappointing, but you guys have Renegade! Yeah, it's dated now, but I used to love that game on the ZX Spectrum.. I don't think the NES has the superior sequel Target: renegade though - wonder if that might appear on the C64?

I´ll wait for IK+ (did that come out on C64? I had it for the Atari ST), which was a much superior sequel (3 player action!). This was a decent game though.

aphexbr commented on Uridium:

I used to have this on the ZX Spectrum and it was a decent shooter at the time. But... 500 points? I'm sure it only cost 2.99GBP when it first came out. Maybe reduce it to 300 points and I might buy it but for that price I'd rather save for Super/Mega R-Type...

aphexbr commented on Master System Games Coming to The VC!:

Nice to hear Game Gear stuff will be included in here as well - I never really had one as I had (and preferred) the Atari lynx - ya rly! But, the first Shinobi game for the GG was the best in the 8-bit series for me...

Oh, and to everyone going "what's this?" - the Master System was Sega's first home system, before the Genesis/Megadrive, and it actually outsold the Nintendo NES in Europe!

aphexbr commented on Nintendo of Europe relaunches with Wii Points ...:

Yes! I've been waiting for this for so long. Anything decent on the old site disappeared as soon as it was available, so I've had over 8000 stars saved since the Gamecube days. I just redeemed for 2000 Wii points, so at least 2 games for absolutely nothing :) Sweeeet...

aphexbr commented on EU VC Releases - 14th September - Double Japan...:

Note to Nintendo: you are not making any fans in Europe by ripping us of again and again. Yes, this is a nice deal on the face of it but by giving a 2 weeks limit and 100 point increase for Mario is pretty cheeky, especially after we've been forced to wait so long for Super Paper Mario (which I assume is what this VC batch is meant to tie in with).

Also, does anyone know if these games have definitely been translated? I assume they have but I need confirmation before I can think of dropping 6€.
