Starwolf_UK commented on Nintendo Download: 2nd April (Europe):

@RJBurgess About a week. When it launched they had some glitches like labeling all GBA games as being for 3DS; not Wii U. All but Zelda Minish Cap would only redeem on a Wii U though. Minish Cap was then removed from the stars catalogue and brought back (so it is safe to assume that "glitch" is fixed).

Starwolf_UK commented on UK Retailer GAME Opens Marketplace to Sell Gam...:

As with any marketplace why would I want it? I suppose in the case of this GAME one it might be easier to browse gaming merchandise or something. But as for it supplementing their goods well...I do find it a bit sickening they Chinese counterfeits for sale such as these:
The controllers are highly likely to be junk tier and as simple as a USB hub is that could also easily fail.

@Kolzig Special Miis do come via spotpass. The problem is Nintendo of Europe rarely ever send out special Miis full stop (given the Chibi Robo Photo Finder puzzle panel is missing for no reason they really don't care about puzzle swap). The last one I received was about 6 months ago (some Game Freak employee) and I've yet to receive 10 (I've had the system since 2013)

Meanwhile America gets one every other month it feels. As for Honest Abe. Well it is promoting Code Name STEAM so in May, perhaps?

Starwolf_UK commented on All Theatrhythm Dragon Quest DLC Set to be Free:

BMS stages look horrible in Theatrhythm Dragon Quest (notes scrolling vertically means less response time and the zooming perspective makes it harder to time them) though which makes me hesitate even if it does come out.

But I need to know more about the base package I can't see this having 220 songs with 80+ DLC so it might be something like 70 songs with 50 free DLC (so more on the scale on the original Theatrhythm Final Fantasy than Curtain Call)

Starwolf_UK commented on 3DS System Update Shuts Off Web Browser Exploi...:

I think people are giving Pokemon Shuffle too much credit here. The Gateway launcher itself using the same entryponit (and the code for all the others being reverse engineered from it) is much more potent (as that allows to pirate whole games rather than bypass optional IAP which you can already mostly bypass with streetpass or having some patience) as are the stuff prior to shuffle (e.g. VC games, backing up Pokemon and saves and inserting these bypassing need to buy more Pokemon game cartridges or subscribe to Pokemon bank). But I guess everyone wants a scapegoat and wants to blame the hack they don't like for getting rid of ones they do like.

@GhotiH Nintendo can't selectively block so their hand is forced here really.

@Tobo9279 No eShop (so no getting updates so say MH4G will be offline for life for example). Cartridges only and even sometimes those don't work. The fact games not working remains a possibility and the fact you essentially need a second system now would make me feel more comfortable buying one of those in the region I want to play imports from (although that isn't great advice if you want to play ones from multiple regions let's say Puyo Puyo Tetris from Japan, Maplestory from Korea and Inazuma Eleven Go 2 from Europe for example) and also you might have objections to purchasing multiple hardware.

Starwolf_UK commented on 3DS Browser Exploit Hackers Bypass Pokémon S...:

Surprised it took so long. A couple of RAM dumps tells you the address the hearts left are stored and from that you just make a tool to edit that value.

You can do the same thing with Candy Crush Saga using Cheat Engine on a PC.

Starwolf_UK commented on Review: Flap Flap (3DS eShop):

@JoakimZ I found a pre-order on Amazon Germany and the box art on the Nintendo of Europe website. Apparently the retail version is €20 but either way it is published by Big Ben Interactive so you probably won't be able to find it in any case.

Starwolf_UK commented on Nintendo Are Releasing Stylish Pokémon Omega ...:

You can order these on Amazon Japan (very cheap too at 540 yen; things like the Zelda and SMB ones are twice that). However, the shipping is so expensive you would need to order several for it to be worthwhile (and/or use a forwarding service) and I'm not sure if they actually toys outside of Japan.

The XY cards are also there at 385 yen but are add-on items only (you need to spend 2500 yen to be able to put them in your basket).

Just to be useful a link to the Sapphire cards:

@tudsworth That reminds me of some of the licensed Pokemon games out there including:
Pokemon Uno:
Pokemon Pom Jong (it is basically a kids version of Mahjong):

Starwolf_UK commented on You'd Better Get a Bigger Micro-SDHC Card for ...:

@nacho_chicken It is not half the size. The Japanese Wii release of Xenoblade barely fits on a single layer DVD (which this one is a bit smaller than but not by a great deal). To have both Japanese and English audio the western releases are a dual layer disc.

Of course pre-order download sizes have been terribly wrong in the past (remember 2.1 GB SSB 3DS yet it was only 1.2 GB when the game came out?)

Starwolf_UK commented on Pokémon Shuffle Available to Download Right N...:

@gspro15198 Not at all. It is a slow paced match 3 game rather than a match 4 action game. Graphically it looks similar but there are lots of gameplay changes.

Link Battle had a fairly low skill celling but the game never gave impossible to clear boards (as in there will always be a way to enter link mode and an even number of what is left plus it will throw a few Ditto at you for mercy) while here you are at the mercy of the RNG giving you a good layout or generating enough things off-screen to do things in the move limit (let alone in few enough moves to make captures have a high chance). With character levels in the game I'm worried that you will have to grind later on.

Starwolf_UK commented on Nintendo Download: 19th February (Europe):

I suppose it could be worse than Kirby. It could be Punch-Out or Sin & punishment 2; the two games easily found for <€20 (I look forward to those two months).

That said I've got enough games to get on with so there is no reason for me to buy Kirby yet.

Starwolf_UK commented on IronFall: Invasion Single and Multiplayer Mode...:

Am I excited? It requiring an NNID has forced me hand here (I assume only the free version will be on the eShop) to not care now as I can't get it. I won't link an NNID to my 3DS as locking it to a single country is silly from a content point of view (especially as I own content not available in the UK).

But it being f2p is probably better for the game as a whole though multiplayer might get annoying if you're stuck playing the same map over and over.

Anyway the NOE website says it is £8.99 a mode now and points out clearly that you save nothing by buying them together.

Starwolf_UK commented on UK Supermarket Giants Wage Wii U Price Wars to...:

@6ch6ris6 I'm in the UK and never see such sales either. Why? Because there are about 5 of these in the entire country. Quite literally the end of the end of the line.

I'd much rather a slightly worse that anyone could pick up such as the $200 refurbished Wii U that Americans turn their nose at.

Starwolf_UK commented on Sakurai Considered Having All Fighters Unlo...:

I still like how F-Zero X did it of offering an unlock all button press code for those of you who don't want unlock all the characters conventionally. That way you can please people who like to be rewarded with unlocks as well as please those who want to start playing the game at its fullest.

Starwolf_UK commented on The Hyrule Warriors Majora's Mask Pack DLC is ...:

It is a shame V1.5 has made the loading times on the levels twice as long.

Some people think it is artificially extended so that the full loading animation is seen but IIRC just idling on a done loading screen did that anyway.

I'd really like a media outlet cough Nintenodlife cough to try and find out if this a bug in the patch or an intended feature. That would be typical intended "feature"; a 2 minute mission now takes 35 seconds to load as opposed to 15...

If I could go back to v1.4, I would but now going back means v1.0...

Starwolf_UK commented on The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D Downl...:

@Dipper723 The extra languages are a few voice files (announcer and Sonic) and some text and it isn't much larger than the US version.

The 2.1 GB SSB size comes from a Japanese pre-order download card slip of paper. In other words not a reliable source at all (and proven wrong on many an occasion).

Hopefully the NOA website doesn't prove to be as unreliable.

Starwolf_UK commented on Nintendo Download: 22nd January (Europe):

I knew being too busy to get SMTIV would pay off. Shame the differential is being spent on the Theathrhythm DLC songs out that day too (that is one I don't like about these PR, they normally don't list DLC).

Also I'm most surprised DK Jr. Math(s) wasn't yet out in Europe.

Starwolf_UK commented on Pokémon Shuffle is a Match-Three Game With Sl...:

Am I going to download it? I can't. Quite literally because Nintendo decided that people who don't have an NNID linked to their can't download free software for absolutely no reason (apart from to give NNID a bullet point of great thing it does). But why don't I want NNID? Well being locked into a single eShop is really bad for European regions. I own content unavailable in the UK eShop (plus hate the prices there because I live in 2015, not 2008) and there is no eShop which covers everything I own.

But looking at this game I'm not sure I'm missing much. 30 hours of Pokemon Link Battle was enough for me. Fine so this has a stamina bar, mega evolutions etc...whatever. Plus like the article said Puzzle & Dragons is just around the corner.

Starwolf_UK commented on Video: Does Super Mario Galaxy 2 On Wii U Offe...:

I can't say I'm impressed with the standard prices that are essentially Nintendo selects prices (at least in Europe) only without the disc and can only play on Wii U but these week 1 offers are good.

Part of me wonders if the Gamepad as classic controller support will be for Wii mode in general as part of a firmware update since none of the 3 initial games support it and only two of the known upcoming games do. I certinaly will be unimpressed if it is like pay us €20 for a game you already have a disc for if you want to use the Gamepad as a classic controller .

Starwolf_UK commented on Nintendo Steps Away From The Brazilian Market:

The $2000 PS4? Half of that is profit:
It is easy to blame taxes for everything but at some point people get trapped into thinking everything is expensive so companies take advantage to boost their margins.

The Wii U never even got a Brazilian eShop and as far as I know due to the outrageous local prices (and the Brazilian eShop on 3DS not allowing you add funds from most bank accounts as NOA couldn't be bothered to read up on Brazilian banking regulations, something Micorsoft and Sony managed to implement within a week) everybody used the Canadian eShop anyway (although I think that has the same problem of not being able to add funds from most banks). How outrageous were the local prices, let's just say I saw an image offering monthly installments as a payment option.

What is worse though is from a support perspective in terms of repairs etc but maybe that already was bad.

Starwolf_UK commented on Play-Asia is Taking Orders on This Multitap Ma...:

@Luna-Harmony The tax part is only 20% of the value of the product. The rest of it some handling fee that the courier companies/post office make up because they paid the tax beforehand and filled in a few forms that you are not allowed to fill in yourself. Some people have been able to waiver the handling fee by stating that under UK contract law they don't have to pay for it.

To be honest the handling fee just makes me use retailers who are willing to commit a form of mail fraud (that is lie about the value on the package so no taxes have to be paid, usually mail fraud is the opposite of a high value to claim off insurance for damages) losing the government tax revenue.

Starwolf_UK commented on Level-5 Confirms Some Handsome 3DS eShop Festi...:

@Magrane I'd put Crimson Shroud at the top of the Guild games I've played (not played Weapon Shop, Bugs vs. Tanks or Starship), it has a well written localisation and an interesting world. The downfall is the same as most of the Guild, it is not that long though (my first play was about 6.5 hours, maybe that is enough for you) in the sense of it leaving you wanting more it does have new game+ which the level 5 website suggests playing to the end. The dice rolling and static graphics mean it might not be for everyone though.

@OmegaPowerEX It only affects the games published by Level5ia. The games you named were published by Nintendo in Europe and Level5 in Japan.

@LawRulesALL You can not have the same NNID on two systems simultaneously. You can however use the system transfer tool to transfer over the NNID and all content associated with it to the new 3DS (provided an NNID isn't already linked to that). Read the system settings manual for more information.

Starwolf_UK commented on Snazzy Golf Balls Added to Club Nintendo in PA...:

You know I'm really suspicious of NOE, multiple physical rewards in a month like they're trying to get us to wipe our stars balance and this suspicion is mainly fueled by the following fact.

Recent games (Bayonetta, Pokémon, SSB U but not 3DS) have expiration dates of 31/03/15. Games are supposed to expire 3.5 years after their last release so these are quite a massive departure from there. That makes me wonder if NOE are reworking Club Nintendo or are going to wind it down and go out with a bang rather than a whimper which NOA seem to be doing.

Worldwide the Club Nintendo schemes are revised. New 3DS does not come with slips (though in Australia this might be related to the above), Japan no longer has elite membership (so just like Europe :) ) and the last few platinum gifts were digital games (including a DSiWare release of Advance Wars : Days of Ruin).

As for arguments, I'm out as the only winning move is not to play. No matter what you say everyone will claim the grass is greener.

@ikki5 Question. Would you spend 800 coins for 1000 Wii points? That is what you are saying Europeans who want download games should do. Also that website might not even work anymore, I got an error when I tried to log in. It claimed I had not linked a Club Nintendo account to my Wii (last time the Wii went on the Wii Shop it was linked) but that also makes it impossible for a Wii U owner to use (as you are unable to link CN account to the VWii Wii Shop).

Starwolf_UK commented on UK Retailer GAME Is Selling Captain Toad: Trea...:

The only way to get stock for the 2nd is to have it for the 18th. It makes me wonder what NOE was thinking with the release date. I always felt the January date was down to NNP ending then and due to the small DL size many would want a digital version. In that case they could always have taken the weird decision to delay the eShop release...but instead we're left with GAME being thrown a bone and the rest of Europe wanting mass street date breakage.

Still it should be interesting to see how this game charts as this staggered and sudden surprise launch has probably killed it somewhat...

Starwolf_UK commented on 3DS System Update 9.4.0-21 Brings a Whole New ...:

It changing home menu might mess with Gateway is all I can think (you can press a button to make a menu appear which swaps what game is loaded into the cartridge slot). Apparently it doesn't do anything more to homebrew than what was already done by the update a few days ago.

Starwolf_UK commented on Guide: Training The Ultimate Pokémon In Omega...:

@burninmylight I should have known better as I always use vitamins when EV training. Many people argue money puts them off vitamins but when you have several million money isn't an issue. Also a salesperson in ORAS has the half price every Monday (it doesn't stack with the bargain O-power and the discount is the same as that).

Personally since 252 is the normal goal going beyond 60 using them doesn't make sense (60+4 hordes=260=252, 100+4 hordes=300=252, one of these is 4 vitamins cheaper).

The vitamins also work great for allocating that last stat point in a 252/252/6 allocation.

Starwolf_UK commented on Guide: Training The Ultimate Pokémon In Omega...:

For battling and initiating the Hordes I recommend a Tropius as it can learn Fly, Sweet Scent, Razor Leaf and Earthquake. The last two will hit all targets and it is the only Pokemon that learns both of the first two moves (not counting Smeargle).

Shame that doesn't help you get to the Cave of Origin (Pokemon Center is on the wrong side of the city so you need surf).

Starwolf_UK commented on Nintendo Download: 27th November (Europe):

Why is the Pier Solar price in US $? Then again I've been seeing reports of an utterly baffling €11.49/£11.99 (£11.99 is over €15) so maybe the price isn't decided yet though the $15 price does suggest €14.99.

Some nice things this week even if they will be overshadowed by Smash and Pokemon.

I remember a while back the developers said little dew wouldn't be coming to Germany because of the USK rating being expensive, is that still true?

If you count the Squaresoft localisation of Breath of Fire then it is the first Square-Enix game on the Wii U VC. Still would prefer the GBA version as more exp awarded in battle helps the grinding issue. I can imagine it won't happen for a while now...

Starwolf_UK commented on Upcoming DLC for Mighty Gunvolt Unleashes New ...:

@rockodoodle The code shows up on screen once the download completes if you hit download now. If you hit sleep mode download instead you have to look at the eShop receipt found via purchase history for the code.

Given the constant tweets about the Shovel Knight theme here in Europe the eShop receipts thing is really unintuitive.

Starwolf_UK commented on Cubic Ninja Sales Spike Following Announcement...:

Welp with it announced at 5am the one of the 12 copies of Cubic Ninja in the UK stood no chance of being mine. Maybe next game. If there is one...

One thing is for sure Nintendo will try with patching. The obvious one is kill the exploit files on sight in the SD card (the solution is just don't have the SD card but does the 3DS generally like SD cards being inserted mid-gamplay).

Ultimately, they could blacklist the game from being launched or put it into some sort of sandbox. Both are very drastic though.

Starwolf_UK commented on 3DS Homebrew Exploit Set to be Launched on 22n...:

@StarDust4Ever I saw the original tweet that loader screenshot came from it said; "(the pokemon and zelda icons are just for testing; they're actually yeti3DS and ftpony)". From that I would guess there is no sort of game loader in the works (this makes me baffled by the region free comments, you need a way to either hack the system menu to remove the check or a loader to bypass that menu).

@fluggy I think it is not allowing but rather the hack is incapable of providing the steps necessary. As for the emulation is piracy argument. What if the game I want to play is not out on the eShop. Is it piracy then? What about owning or buying the cart in that circumstance (which btw makes no difference because the publisher doesn't see that money).

Starwolf_UK commented on Nintendo Download: 20th November (Europe):

@Peach64 What about if my critiscism for Watch Dogs is the price. £50 when it can be found for £20 on any other system is the textbook definition of sent to die (but that was the whole idea, as they now have an excuse to no longer port M rated games to Wii U). If we look at Shovel Knight. It has yet to go on sale on any platform (the cross-buy promotion is the closet thing to a sale).

Starwolf_UK commented on Announcement Of "Delta Episode" Brings More Le...:

Anyone expecting all 14 of the mirage spot legendaries to be accessible in one play through might be disappointed. I can see the Genies being like Gen 5 and the other three trios to be starter Pokemon based, like the birds in XY. If they're not it makes me wonder what on earth Gamefreak were thinking with how the bird trio were handled in XY.

Then again later entries in gens have always had more to catch but going from 4 to erm 20+ is quite a leap.

@erv @ricklongo FYI VGChartz is largely fictional. Many publishers have commented that their numbers are wrong. A keen observer will notice the VGChartz numbers change whenever any numbers are made public. They also fail to disclose their methods or source of their data (the things they give on the methedology page are useless in the experimental sense of the method should be detailed enough for anyone to recreate). If we assume they are doing as they say you have to consider straw polls are vastly less accurate than the actual data. If they're well sampled they can be effective but it is easy to get it wrong.

There was also that time when they sales figures for Aliens Colonial Marines...on Wii U. You know, the game that never came out.

This article may be from 2008 but many of the points are sadly very relevant:

Starwolf_UK commented on Sonic Boom Exploit Allows Players to Skip Larg...:

To go with that old Miyamoto line about delayed games, a glitched game is glitched forever. Especially on Nintendo platforms where the update data is separate so can just be deleted (what you lose is incremental updates, for example there is no way to get a version 2.0 MK8 anymore). Even for the download.

Sonic games are inherently buggy, even Generations. I wonder how much of that is the internal SEGA QA process. Maybe they forgot to send copies to the QA and were like "they've not said anything, must be no glitches"

@GoshDangTravino You did read the "Now Starcraft 2 for example has gone through loads of balancing patches and guess what, all replays work so it is disapointing the same couldn't be done here." part, right? I am perfectly aware of the replays being macros for both Smash and Starcraft 2. My point was Blizzard figured out how to keep obsolete data for old replays to still work so I am disappointed the same care wasn't given for Smash.

Starwolf_UK commented on Upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS Pa...:

Goodbye Wario Momentum glitch. You will not be missed. For those of you unaware:

So replay. Thing with smash is even if were to keep the V1.0.3 update data separate that may not help you with replays as the game goes into lockdown if you're playing on an older version (saves won't load until you are on the latest version).

Now Starcraft 2 for example has gone through loads of balancing patches and guess what, all replays work so it is disapointing the same couldn't be done here.

Starwolf_UK commented on Nintendo Outlines Confusing amiibo Save Data L...:

@Omarpixel9 Find some evidence of a 10 megabyte NFC chip even existing before saying things like that. It is hard enough to find ones a mere 1024th of the size at 10 kilobytes...

@SanderEvers I'd be interested to know where you found that info. It is plausible and to be honest that info seems to be hard to find for these sort of products and also how their storages compares to Skylanders and Disney Infinity. I do get the impression that 4kb is on the larger side for an NFC chip (as most functions seem to be less than 512 bytes).

Anyway, because of that I won't fault Nintendo for not putting bigger chips but I will fault them for not including data management (given you can register them to a user it seems silly not include this). Then again look at the data management of the Wii U in general, can't have have a the sensible solution of saves on internal, everything else on external, but you have to have a whole game (game, saves for all users, DLC and updates) in the same place.

But maybe I'm jumping the gun a bit as Amiibo data management could always come when some games come out that use them outside of read-only mode.

Thinking of that being locked keys, Nintendo thought so too as the boxes have a strip in them (gameexplain video) so you have to take the Amiibo out of the package to use it. This avoids not opening them, scanning them in the box, unlocking stuff and then returning them to the retailer.
