Smoke39 commented on Review: Heavy Fire: Special Operations (WiiWare):

@Vinsanity: FPSs aren't any more superior evolutions of rail shooters than 3D platforms are of side-scrollers. They're two different genres with their own unique appeal. If you want more FPSs or games like S&P and Star Fox that's fine, but there's no need to take it out on another genre just because you aren't particularly fond of it.

Smoke39 commented on Review: Heavy Fire: Special Operations (WiiWare):

Lots of Wii rail shooters do require shaking to reload (I know Overkill and UC use it), but flicking the crosshair offscreen and back is enough to register, so they still have that classic light gun feel. Apparently it isn't so responsive here.

Anyway, sad to hear this isn't so great. I was hoping for a new Ghost Squad-esque game. :<

I don't agree with this apparent attitude that rail shooters are just a poor man's FPS. They're two different types of experience, and I enjoy them both. Granted, it's very easy to make a very bland rail shooter, but I don't think the genre itself is inherently without merit.

Smoke39 commented on Review: de Blob (Wii):

I have to agree with the point Kirk's trying to make. I really liked the game's upbeat, colorful, playful style, but I didn't get very far before I just got sick of fighting with the loose controls all the time.

Smoke39 commented on Epic Mickey Is Exclusive To Wii:

I saw some concept art for this a long time ago on IGN, only I think it was on the PC channel and I think they were making it sound like it was canceled.

Spector's involvement has me intrigued, as Deus Ex is perhaps my favorite game ever.

Smoke39 commented on More Metroid Prime in the Pipeline?:

I've personally had enough of the Prime series. The first game was a good proof of concept and Echoes was pretty cool despite some annoyances, but I really wasn't wild about Corruption. I'm looking forward to seeing what direction Other M takes.

I love you, Blaze. Every time I see someone go "baww, no multiplayer not buyin' it" I want to smack them. D:

Smoke39 commented on Review: Hybrid Heaven (Nintendo 64):

I think this review is harsh. I'd give it more around a 6. The bland level design is probably the biggest downer for me. Boxy, empty, and lifeless.

There's no doubt that the game is pretty rough around the edges, but the combat system is still quite unique and interesting. The game would've done well with a sequel to flesh it out and add an extra coat of polish.

Smoke39 commented on Telltale Games: 'Wii Audience Is Perfect For Us":

This isn't a reversal, it's a clarification of a misconception. Somehow rabid fanboys twisted "the Wii is underpowered" (which we've known since the beginning) into "the Wii sucks and everyone who owns one is stupid." Was it a lame excuse for the framerate issues? I think it's likely. But a programmer venting some frustration with hardware limitations he isn't used to dealing with is nothing to take PERSONAL OFFENSE at.

Smoke39 commented on First Red Steel 2 In-Game Footage:

I love the art syle, and the swordplay seems to be much more integrated than the random, isolated sword duels in the first game. With a bit more polish than the first game, this could be totally awesome. o:

Smoke39 commented on US VC Release - 7th July - King of the Monsters:

@Rexy: I'm all for trying new games (many of the VC games I've bought are ones I'd never heard of before), but that doesn't mean every game is gonna be one that appeals to me. The fewer games released, the less likely I am to be interested in one, so this trend of only one game a week makes me sad. :<

I really liked the combat in Soul Blazer. Your sword had a nice, quick arc, and I liked how you could strafe in the game. I didn't like Illusion of Gaia's gameplay as much, but it did have a cute story.

I'd really like to play Teranigma someday, preferably on the VC rather than resorting to emulation.

@RayWilson: I'm surprised to hear anyone else has actually even heard of Out to Lunch. :b I actually have a copy I bought used from a West Coast Video back when they were phasing out their SNES games. It's a cute game, and the publisher is apparently still around, so perhaps we could still see it on the VC some day.

Score one for the Mother fandom! Hopefully Nintendo'll actuall pay us some mind for once.

I never actually played CT, so it'd be cool to get that on the VC. And the other two games are awesome (MM is probably my favorite Zelda, it had so much personality).

Smoke39 commented on Japanese Virtual Console list - May 2008:

Yae was in Ganbare Goemon 3. The reasoning behind "Kid Yang" and "Dr. Ying" was probably that "Goemon" and "Ebisumaru" are pretty weird names to westerners. At least the N64 games made it mostly in tact. And I would guess that so few games have been released outside of Japan because they're so quirky and Japanese that they don't expect the games to appeal to many westerners. ):

@MasterMario: Importing. :b

Ganbare Goemon 2 is excellent. It's a pretty straightforward platformer, so it doesn't really HAVE to be translated, like RoninDennis pointed out. Here's hoping they bring it to the rest of the world.

As for Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon requiring the control pak to save, isn't the suspend play feature an adequate substitute for control pak emulation?
