Shame, I really like Harry Partridge's stuff, including this cartoon. (Though it's really not his style to be this family-friendly.) Let's hope this shovelware doesn't ruin his reputation of one of the best animators on YouTube.
It seems to me this situation is playing out a lot like the 3DS. It has a great launch with great games from the outset, but then little else. I think it'll take a killer app, like Mario Kart 7 or Super Mario 3D Land were, (and a deep price cut) to start moving units again. Nintendo proved they could save a platform in a situation like this, let's see if they can do it again here.
Bought it on PC... because I couldn't wait anymore. but I dunno, it seems more suited for consoles, in which case I'd want to go HD.
Maybe they can do some deal like they did with the PS3/Vita where when you buy it on Wii, you'll get it on Wii U as well, so you can play it on the Gamepad.
Eh, I'm more concerned with how much this GamePad is going to cost... has there been any word on pricing yet? This can't be too cheap. LCD screens don't grow on trees.
Yeah I think they mean on the controllers, since the WiiU has to essentially stream the video data to the controller, wirelessly. Doing that to two at once is taxing. But halved framerate is nothing too noticable. If you want a good example of this, play Dead or Alive Dimensions on the 3DS. In 2D mode the framerate is 60fps, (I think?) but in 3D it's halved.
Just downloaded it! Pretty awesome. It has Wii Wheel/Accelerometer support to recreate the arcade handlebars, but you can play it with GCN, classic controller, or just the Wii Remote's cross pad.
Get it if you love Sega arcade racers, or arcade racers in general.
Yeah, it seems like in general, Sega has run with this VC concept far more than Nintendo has. The other two VC online games are Puyo Puyo 1&2, both published by Sega. (correct me if I'm wrong) Also, look at the new Game Gear emulation we're seeing on 3DS... it pleases both the purists and the non-purists. Nintendo's Game Boy emulation just does monochrome, hell, not even any Super Game Boy support. The most we're seeing from them in the way of innovation is the possibility of multi-player on 3DS NES games. Oh, and there was the Poke'mon Snap Photo Channel thing...
But otherwise, Sega is doing what Nintendoesn't want to do, on their own console... and they have the nerve to question consumers' VC support.
Actually, the reason that they put this on the Genesis version might be since this version was already sort of made for it. Remember the Genesis XBAND Modem? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XBAND This was one of the games compatible with it, and it seems like the same deal where you can't see the other person's name and such.
If only they would release Dreamcast games. Then they could release that special "Matching Service" version of SSF2X/T... probably would be huge though, space-wise.
And despite N64 using cartridges, I know of many people who owned an N64 and not a Playstation. Granted a lot of these people were the "casual gamers" of today and own a Wii and only owned those four games seen in the N64 picture. But still, they hold the N64 to such high echelons that there's no way it could have been a failure.
Not a bad port, except for the sound... as is a common problem on all GBA SNES ports. It's manageable in some parts, but Vanilla Dome is OFF KEY! Ugh, how could they screw that up!
I'm a huge Carmen fan. I own Where in the World and Where in Time on my Genesis and I know the game show's theme by heart. (Rockappella ftw!) But this just doesn't seem like it should be on WiiWare... maybe Wii retail, but not here.
I heard the news of this huge price cut on NPR, and I thought, "Great! Now's my chance!" Then I came here to learn more about it and found this... an ultimatum.
Eh, I own most of those GBA and NES games that are supposedly exclusive. (I personally think Nintendo will release them again eventually... they're classics for crying out loud.) And anyway, I have most of these games or good means to get them. (eBay anyone?)
I guess I'll wait to get this 10-20 years from now when the save battery inevitably dies... or better yet, just get the iPhone version. Apple makes sure you can delete save data!
Ah don't worry. Where there's a will, there's a way, and the homebrew community will come up with a fix within the year.
Hmm, neat stuff! I hate the look of my SNES/NES on my Samsung flat screen. It's so bad that I actually brought my old CRT from my home up to my apartment just for my retro consoles.
As far as for my Wii, my component cables look fine on my Samsung. I've never had any input lag problems whether retro or new consoles, but I noticed it has a "game mode" that reduces the input lag but degrades the picture quality.
Awesome! The one flaw I could think of is desync, a problem with bringing most non-online games online. (Anybody remember Kaillera?) But I think Sega has this in good hands!
Ugh... sadly motion control will never be taken seriously because in the video game world, there is resistance force acting on your character. (People hitting you, the wind, etc.)
Oh yeah and Kotaku and Gizmodo called, they want their name back.
I guess if you don't already own SMAS, you can add a few points to this score. On its own, its a great collection, and it set the stage for game remakes to come.
But I don't see why they couldn't just name this Super Mario All-Stars... since that's all it essentially is. I'm sure they would've still sold well, since a lot of Nintendo's new audience certainly doesn't own this and would love this game. But rebranding it as something new in time for the big 25 is just going to let down a lot of people... including Mario.
This is something they could've just put on the Virtual Console! ...where all of there game's NES versions are in the first place...
Hell, Sega put more effort in to their "Sega Arcade Classics Collection" on the Sega CD back in 1993!! They took the existing Genesis roms and revamped them with CD audio and sound effects. (which was mostly just the arcade music re-recorded)
I think this would be a great time to make that all 6 generations Pokemon thing I've suggested numerous times... all 750+ Pokemon in all six continents all combined! And maybe even make it an MMO. Yesh!
I remember when developers like Capcom were fine with multiplatform releases and there wasn't all this drama over who would get one game this time and another next time.
And down/up converting something to and from HD to SD is not that hard! I think its the general consensus here that Capcom is being lazy.
Most home consoles have about a 5 year lifespan, right? It seems only natural that popularity would start to wane and a new console would be on the way... though this time around Nintendo's been hush-hush.
Did you also hear how Nintendo originally wanted to make the Famicom a 16-bit console? It was becoming the norm in Japanese arcades, but it would have cost too much, so they went 8-bit.
They also designed the console/cartridges to only use one memory chip. (why Donkey Kong was missing a level) But as the price of RAM greatly dropped in years following, they started making carts with more of them. (With an MMC chip to tie it all together right there in the cart!)
And let's not forget how they used Famicom cartridge boards in the early US carts with an adapter at the NES's launch... it goes on and on.
The gaming industry needed a reboot, and Nintendo had to do it with as little cash as possible!
@sykotek Bravo! Bravo! You should totally turn that into a musical!
But lets get serious here. Who remembers that Sega Classics Collection on the PS2? Same premise... remake the classic arcade and Master System Games for the modern consoles... and half those games sucked.
What I think they need to do is go ahead and make the 3D or 2.5D remakes or whatever, but make the originals available too, since people actually liked those! And if the remakes turn out good as well, you win twice.
@38 Notice I said they look like cheap knock-offs at this point... To the average consumer anyway. @39 You're right about the cheap thing... what was I thinking?
I guess Nintendo's only real (and I use that lightly) concern is that it isn't the only motion control console on the block anymore. Granted their two competitors (especially the one that starts with an S and rhymes with Ony) are looking more like cheap knock-offs at this point.
@Bass I would've actually expected Nintendo to upgrade them in some way. After all, they didn't just slap the NES roms onto the cartridge back when Super Mario All Stars was first coming out. I still think they're gonna wow us with something extra. Back then they upgraded the games to run on Super Mario World's engine, so I think (emphasis on "think") that they would upgrade them to the New Super Mario Bros. Wii engine.
Hmm, I wonder if they'll remake these with the New Super Mario Bros. engine. That would be fun, and surely they wouldn't use a whole disc just to put a 16-megabit rom on it... unless...
Great interview... but this doesn't look like anything new. This revenge aspect might be the deal breaker here, however. Otherwise it will end up as just another Wii game with the word "party" in the title. Yawn.
I really, REALLY, loved this game. My friends and I still pick this up for a few deathmatches every now and then, and we think it's fun... I honestly don't understand all the flack its been getting. Most of it is probably from those SF64 fanboys who won't open their mind to anything else.
And I also liked Star Fox Command... since it's kind of like that awesome Star Fox 2 beta that got leaked out.
