Bombshell update, had me chokin' on me morning porridge! Still, since it's Hanabi 'n' all, I'm going to stick to my points to see what the coming weeks bring...

Edit: Ho, I see. Hopefully we'll get some extra's with those imports, or it will mean we have two VC weeks with two games alternating the WW releases.

RoninDennis commented on Publishers Remain Tight-Lipped On Black Monday...:

You know, you can speculate all you like about who's wrong and who's not, but the fundamental wrong is this: Nintendo didn't like the actions Capcom, Hudson and SNK undertook and decided to settle to score over the backs of the customers.

They could have released as planned while telling C, S and H that they do not appreciate these press announcements in the future. No one'd get burnt. Instead they childishly screwed these companies' credibility and the customer's expectations. And that's BOOOH!

RoninDennis commented on Publishers Remain Tight-Lipped On Black Monday...:

Ah well, Monday was such a slapper that I just sat back and thought, if Nintendo is so anal retentive about putting up a miserable bunch of friggin' roms week after week, so what? Why do I even care so passionately about this lousy business? Then, suddenly, it came to me...

The universe is one.
We are one.
Nintendo, SNK, CAPCOM and Hudson... are one.

RoninDennis commented on Nintendo Responds To US Release Date Queries:

@39:
Because, as some folks pointed out, people will stay away from certain games and save their money for the sequel(s). But in the end, this is Nintendo. If they'd lose money buy the bucketloads they'd still follow their idiosyncratic policies. I'm just like the dog under the table, waiting for the crumbs* to fall.

It would certainly be graceful if pricing was not fixed per console, but per game. I think it wouldn't be unreasonable, and for some publishers not unprofitable, to introduce temporary or permanent VC discounts. But few would buy Art of Fighting 1 when AoF 2 is readily available. However, the group of completists might grow when 'inferior' prequels get knocked down a few regionally bound monetary units.

*In this case not divine blessings, but the occassional NES/SNES/TG-16 game that I like. Well, you coulda interpret them as divine blessings, sorta.

I would've expected that VC reviews has 'a guy' for this sort of situations. You know, a guy who goes over there to sort things out, makes some heads ring, crack open a few skulls with a crowbar, clip some fingers with a cigar cutter, and punch some o' them suckas in the mouth.

I think Iwata needs to wake up with his daughter's pony's head in his bed to show him we mean business. C'mon, VCR, if you don't stick up for us guys, who will? (echo: who will, who will, who...)

I remember that a lot of the music was quite melancholy, especially level 2. So that was appropriate for the last game on the SMS. Played it a lot, though.

Ho-lee shi'!!!
You know what sucks harder than not having Wii points? Having the Wii points but, due to a conflict with your provider, having no connection for a good 4 weeks. That's me, baby, ME!
I'll have a lot of catching up to do come september...

RoninDennis commented on USA VC Update: Chase HQ and Art of Fighting 2:

@Objection_Blaster
Absolutely! I'm also underwhelmed by AC, if it turns out the game starts with doing chores for Tom Nook AGAIN I won't even consider a purchase. Also, the game can take you years to just upkeep your village, but you can pretty much reach the major goal in a two weeks, apart from catching some season-bound insects and fish.

RoninDennis commented on USA VC Update: Chase HQ and Art of Fighting 2:

The best solution for everyone would be, I think, a VC release schedule such as this:
1. mediocre to ok titles together: five in one VC week. These titles individually only appeal to a limited group of gamers who'll buy out of nostalgia, curiosity (or bad taste). More gamers will be satisfied.
2. big HITTERS: one in one VC week. These games have almost universal appeal, most gamers will be satisfied.
3. good titles: two in one VC week.

This way, lousy or games with a limited audience get cleared up faster and more people will be happy with the catalog.

Blazing Star looks rockin'! Played a Cotton game on my SNES years ago, but it didin't do that much for me...

One of my other picks would be Area88/UN Squadron, and also Super Smash TV and Pocky & Rocky 1/2, if they count as shmups.

Equinox brings back memories, very intense game. The dungeon music was pretty creepy, the map music was mysterious. But I agree with others, Solstice should also be on the VC schedule. Great game, that was... hears the high pitch whine as character meets his doom on spikes

I remember Evermore... Not the best RPG I ever played, but not a bad one either. As long as you don't expect it to be epic Square (e.g. Mana, Final Fantasy, Chrono, etc.) it won't disappoint.

But of course he's right, Square should put its whole back catalog on here. Shame it ain't gonna happen though.

Soul Blazer is a good game with really great music, nice but simple story arc and some weird dungeons.
Illusion of Gaia is one of the most melancholy games I ever played, nice graphics, awesome music and great story with a very sad conclusion (IMHO, that is).
Terranigma... well, enjoyed the gameplay, graphics and music, but the story made absolutely no sense to me.

RoninDennis commented on Star Parodier:

Not to use fightin' words, Corbie, but why exactly do you think SP superior to PT? I'm interested in your view.
For me, PT offers deeper play and more strategy because of the shoot/punch combination and 3 different power-up options. Also, PT music is better (matter of taste, of course), and the graphics are sharper and more colorful. SP is a fun shooter, but not excellent.

RoninDennis commented on Star Parodier:

I downloaded it Friday, must say I love the visuals and music, wacky, cutesy Japanese games are what got me into gaming in the first place (that's why I don't understand the 'kiddy' nonsense). But i had to crank up to hard for optimal shmup enjoyment, because normal is a bit too easy. In my opinion, however, Pop 'n' Twinbee blows this outta the water completely! Also, it's 200+ blocks, holy hell!!

RoninDennis commented on Bionic Commando NOT coming to the Virtual Cons...:

@Rapadash6:
True, I found the source that Reggie said that from January 2007 Nintendo will release 10 additional VC games a month. Until 2006 their release schedule was geared to 30 titles, which explains the 3-4 games a week quote. You can call it a guesstimate, whatever that is, I call it a promise or commitment. Fact is, bar the las few weeks, for almost six months we got nowhere near that figure.

If one strays from the commitment, one needs a good reason. Another reason of irk was that we never got any. Your point that it is difficult to emulate VC ROMS is vapid. If they could do it before, why not now, as indeed, the C64 4 game launch week clearly shows, they can?

Well, we just don't know whether improvement is on the horizon, for as you know, we had two weeks with 4 and 3 games, we immediately had a week with only one game, PS3 in Europe, DD in USA.

Look, I'm not one of those whiners who wants everything right now and Goldeneye and Final Fantasy 7 to boot. Far from it. So I'm going to ignore your comments on that. What I'm saying is that VC is underperforming, and I still stand by my point that VC should stand on its own, without regard to Wii releases. Because they are DIFFERENT. If I can buy Brawl AND Double Dragon II on one day it will be a happy weekend for me.

Even if I don't have the money now, I can buy the games I really want later. If I don't want the game at all (like NES Volleyball) I'll NEVER buy it, even if I urinate dollar bills on Sundays. It's that simple (did I mention the Long Tail business scheme yet?).

I don't need Nintendo to decide for me whether I can afford 5 or 1 game. They have more than enough to release, so they should damn well release like they said they would. Deviation from that policy need a clear reason. There isn't any, since they give none. VC isn't hell as of yet, but it could damn well be a lot closer to heaven. Business schmischness. Nintendo has a superengine on their hands that they're pulling with two toothless donkeys. Fer shame. My last words on it, too!

RoninDennis commented on Bionic Commando NOT coming to the Virtual Cons...:

@Rapadash6:
A quick Google search didn't bring it up immediately, but when the VC service was announced Nintendo announced that the release schedule was 3-4 games each week. Initially we got that, hopefully we'll get that again. The reason people got pissed off with 1 game weeks in the first place is because 3-4 games a week WAS policy.

'Also, Nintendo has one week with a single game release and suddenly it's a policy?'

Uhm, don't know which planet you went to on your almost 5 month vacation, but apart from two weeks the US and EU only had a one game update each week. You can check the archives on this website for infromation with quotes.

Also, you can justify almost any Nintendo move with 'it's just a business' rap. Hell, they could release one level of one game each week and it would still be profitable 'business'. The thing is, a company also has a responsibility to its clients as far as I'm concerned.

Like I said, good games get sold no matter when they are released. Mario 3 would still be no.1 if it were released simultaneously with three AAA Wii titles, and new Wii owners will buy these games as well. Nintendo's Long Tail strategy with VC defeats any speculation on what is and what is not good for business. In fact, IMHO they would make even MORE money if they release more VC games. They're cheap, unlimited in supply and people've got the cash. One could even put a psychological spin on it, since when people are happily buying (good games) they will buy even more.

Lastly, June sees Brawl released in Europe, so by your logic we would see even less VC over here. We'll see.

RoninDennis commented on Bionic Commando NOT coming to the Virtual Cons...:

"Why would you offer a bunch of cheaper, quality alternatives when you've got more than a handful of high profile software releases coming out?"

Well, maybe because they promised they would? Seriously, VC needs to stand on its own and apart from Wii releases. There's no excuse for the 1 game policy. I don't think VC releases 'bite' Wii releases either. If MK would be releases simultaneously with MKWii, both would have been sold abundantly. There's always people who want to buy good games, regardless their frequency of appearance. There, I said it.

RoninDennis commented on Bionic Commando NOT coming to the Virtual Cons...:

Well, the word is out. Nintendo has full authority on Capcom VC releases because Capcom licenced them their classic titles. So Capcom really has nothing to do with it, it's Nintendo's decision entirely. Still, BC could be a future release, since up to now Nintendo hasn't allowed its appearance. I didn't find any word on whether this decision is final.

RoninDennis commented on Bionic Commando NOT coming to the Virtual Cons...:

I think it really boils down to the Hitle- OOPS MASTER-D presence in the game. You know, when it was originally released my cousin finished the game and went back to the store to tell the manager the game had Hitler in it. That guy was shocked as hell! (Me and my cousin were, 'Wow it's Hitler! Shoot his !'

You could get away with it then, I suppose, but I don't think you can now, what with gramps and granny having gone casual on the Wii. 'Eckt! It's a dat Hitler on the Wii! Who made this , IBM?!'

@Outrunner:, Well, I hope it does! ;-)
Goemon 2 is perfectly playable without translated dialogue, I've finished it maybe 20 times since its release. It's a shame you won't get the witticisms, but then it shouldn't keep you from playing a great, great 2P game. It got a double release with Goemon 1 on GBA and it's in Konami's Best Buy series, so you can pick it up for scratch!

It's a bit silly to ask for games that will get released anyway (Zelda, Kirby or Mario games), so I'm going for the grey area:
1) Go! Go! Troublemakers/Mischiefmakers! (N64)
2) Double Dragon 2 (NES)
3) Bionic Commando (NES)
4) Earthbound (SNES)
5) Pop 'n'Twinbee (SNES)
