RetroNL commented on Review: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii):

@ badmouth, Thats because Mario is and always will be a pure platformer to begin with, storyline isnt the magical ingrediënt of this genre. Though I know there are Mario games that have some more advanced story in it, but I never saw the use of it, because you mostly already knew what would happen also it was mostly akward and not interesting most at the time. I think that many people need to see that Mario is all about mega fun, collecting and puzzle to get that highest 'score' and satisfaction by beating the most difficult missions. If I have to give a score for the genre I would give it a fat 10 if I look as a game like any other 9,5, In my opinion one of the best games if not the best.

What surprises me is that in this review (not looking at the game in general) that technical audio sound is mentioned, mostly I read things about how good the music is etc. But what many people forget is the sound itsself that is based on Home Cinema experiences. Nintendo may have many critics about the least best console in many options, but it is the best when you look at sound experience, Dolby Pro Logic II is fully integrated with games since the Cube, while other consoles arent fully Dolby optimised (ofcourse you can play the sounds on your home cinema system 5.1 or higher, but the consoles arent optimised to the true Dolby Pro Logic tech. instead they are based on normal Dolby Digital) On that part Nintendo has its better parts.
I play my games mostly in 5.1 since I bought a good 5.1 set (no not one of those retail or Bose sets) I mean a real set of speakers and woofer. It realy shows how Nintendo is pointing on sound.

DK is still one of the characters on console that has appeared in great games, lets hope they will change things soon. Because after the N64 it has been a bit cheapish.

I also own the cartridge, and have played it (also finished it that I can remember) Still it was one of the better platformers on N64 with many fun details, I loved the 'cat' fights ;).

RetroNL commented on Review: Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (Wii):

This game is too underrated by many critics, while Path of Radiance on GC is too overrated sometimes. In my opinion this game is the same as P o R only the battlefields are sometimes bigger (incl. more units) the game is more specific in all ways and also more challenging.. The graphics on the other hand are a bit better than the Cube one, while the music is still top notch. I also like the 'seperate' stories and storylines. Though I have to say the beginning can be quite boring compared to P o R though playing it some hours will make you suck in it.
A very good game with an excellent story, and a good sequel to the GC one, though patience in this game is the answer, but rewards very greatly after more than at least 10 hours of playing.

This is a very good game, a shame that Clover was ended by Capcom. It still draws conclusions that these people werent kidding about in- game experience. I always heard and knew that this game was 'good' but after playing it for the first 5 hours it felt as if I was back in 1998 when I first played Ocarina of Time. I didnt get that feeling when I played a game like Twilight Princess though. I think this says much about it, the brush tech. also works very good on Wii (havent played the PS2 version) to keep it short: A must have for almost every Wii gamer.

Knuckles was a perfect char, I prefer him above Shadow. In my opinion Shadow is the same in most movements as Sonic only his style is different, Knuckles on the other hand is more different, I like the style, especially the gliding.

This game isnt what it was since the old PS 2 days till PES 6, after that it got 'stuck'. Fifa on the other hand is stuck since 1998. My opinion: Spend your money on more useful things.

RetroNL commented on Review: Banjo-Kazooie (Nintendo 64):

The visuals, the music, the puzzles. . This game is in my opinion a masterpiece and one of the best games ever made. For me its the best platformer I have played so far (in feeling) I like it even more than Galaxy.
I will never forget the first time playing it on the N64 in 1998, and yes I know the camera critics, but what early 3d game didnt have that flaw ?
I hope they will release this on VC some day though Microsoft owns Rare now, that means the chances are very slim.

Probably one of the best platformers I have ever played, it has not the charm of Banjo Kazooie though this game has more extras to it, but that doesnt take away that this game is truly very great.

@Pixelman: That is not entirely true, you people got Secret of Mana and Kirby 3 earlier (allthough I know Kirby 3 is import for us.)

Now for the game: I played this game as a kid and still have the cartridge, I allways loved the game for what it was. But a 9/10 is a bit over the hill, I should say an 8 - 8,5 although thats not possible so I go for an 8.
I am going to have this on VC for sure btw.

RetroNL commented on Nintendo Rep: Virtual Console Being Toned Down:

People: Don't you just see this is just a form of marketing ?
Maybe they want to focus on WiiWare a bit more and use vc to keep you guys (and me) online for also watching at the WiiWare contents. I think if almost all great vc games are released, WiiWare games will suffer with it. Its marketing fellas. (see it as a buffer for sales).

This game was ok, the only negative things are that it was short and easy, but a 4 ? You should change the rating with the yoshi cookie title from the nes, this definetly earns a 6.

RetroNL commented on Mario Kart 64:

Best MK game in history as for my opinion. It has all it needs to be the best one. Great memories of racing and batteling.
It' s a good improvement of the Super Nes title. As for the Dash and Wii game: They still can learn from this game, they got too much ads that aren't interesting for a fun race game, they should really focus more on good tracks and only use karts with all characters that come with their own advantages. This is what makes Mario Kart the fun genuine race game we all know and love.
I recommend this game to everyone that loves mario kart and havent played this title.

RetroNL commented on Donkey Kong:

This made Mario and Donkey Kong for what it is. For action puzzle types it' s an excellent game but there are better. For the more casual gamer, this can be quite fun sometimes, but don' t play it too long, because it will get boring.
As you read the above, it is also short what makes this game a bit confusing to buy.

RetroNL commented on Donkey Kong Country:

In my opinion the best FIRST Donkey Kong game made. And one of the best side scrolling action games of the Super Nintendo. Challenging, beautifull graphics (for it s time even for Super Nintendo, almost the best) because of the new graphical chip that was used for it. And great music. One of Rare' s beginning masterpieces.

RetroNL commented on The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past:

Maybe not the most difficult zelda of them all in classic form, but it is a true zelda game. Seeing Link more colourful and graphical for the first time really made a good entrance, and still does. The puzzles, advice and length of this game where good as well. what made this game one of the best zelda games in history.

RetroNL commented on Sonic the Hedgehog:

The coolest game of it' s time. When I was a kid I had a Nes, a friend of mine had a sega megadrive and yes, the first time I played this game, I didn' t know what I saw. a cool hedgehog going very fast through loopings and tunnels when I was playing on flat grounds with Mario Bros. It felt as like gaming had a whole new dimension, the graphics where unique too even against the supernes' s Mario Games it had a shiny kind of look, but enough about this because for graphics in this time you won t buy this game because we have a lot better now ;).
Still this game is a must have in your sega collection, it is like the shiny bad and fast mario game for your sega.

RetroNL commented on Ninja Gaiden:

No dutch comments at all with this game ? I can t believe it ;). Well this was one of my favourite action games on the nes, it was cool, it was fast and it had nice music (especially on the beginning) that gave a good impression.
The game isn' t the most difficult one on the nes but it isn' t easy either, some parts you will have to play twice ore more to go through but eventually you will within a normal time.
Get this game if you like games such as Castlevania or Double Dragon.

One of the best rpg titles in history. 2 player direct play rpg. What do you want more ? To be honest, I like this game even more than the king of snes Rpg' s Chrono Trigger and that was also one of the best Rpg' s ever made.

It started all here, the first NES game that had a save feature and the beginning of what will be one of the best games in history, present and future.
This game was very unique for it' s time, especially the collecting feature, among those features, it was and is a very pleasant game to play, puzzling and action all in one pack. What do you want more ?
Even for not Zelda fans, this game is definitely worth playing.

RetroNL commented on Super Mario Bros. 2:

For me this was a revolutionary mario game in the beginning because you could play with characters such like peach and fly around and stuff before Mario Bros 3 came.
But after playing all of the Nes Bros. games this is the minor one to me. Don t get me wrong, this is not a bad game, but it doesn t give the mario feeling as bros 1 and 3 did. But it is definitely worth to play.

RetroNL commented on Kirby's Adventure:

I was in love with this game when I was younger, you could do everything, it was like the baby version of megaman(that is the only minor thing) with much more details in it. The difficulty level was also normal, it was playable even for the beginning gamers back then. This is also one of the games that had a saving menu in it like Zelda.

Even the graphics where stunning, to be honest I liked this game just as much as super mario bros. 3 maybe a bit more , because you could morph so much ;)

The thing with this game is, is that it' s very hard in the beginning. But after you got the Hammer and played through death mountain. The game get' s more playable and enjoyable till the end. 4 stars from me, although it' s not your all day zelda game, it is still worth playing even for Zelda fans.
