@unrandomsam Tropical Freeze's genius comes from the use of the other Kong's and the way their unique talents change the way the player progresses through stages. Sega could make use of a similar formula with sidecrolling Sonic and friends but they seem to lack the ambition.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is proof that excellent stage design and a few new features can make a game fun. It will be interesting to see what is done with Boom, but I'm still waiting for Sega to be inventive with their classic formula, much like Retro did with DKC:TF. Over all, It's becoming gradually clearer that Sega doesn't know how to properly handle their IP.

The fact that rubbish like Senran Kagura Burst sells is indicative of the consumer. It's a shame that Marvelous AQL resorted to cheap marketing gimmicks to sell a surprisingly solid game that didn't require the raunchy tactics.

@Hy8ogen What about X8 made it rubbish? The game at its core was still a 2D sidescroller, but with 3D visuals. I understand that there were maybe two stages that were borderline 3D rail shooters but aside from that, it was still a 2D sidescrolling Mega Man X game at heart. Simply put, visuals have very little influence on how fun a game can be if it is crafted well. I have a blast playing Star Fox 64 regardless of Fox's arwing being a triangle with a low poly head sitting on top of a jpeg of his cockpit.

I believe a lot of people call difficult games 'bad games' for various reasons. If so called 'gamers' can get passed the difficulty and quit being jaded, maybe they can appreciate X8 for what it really is, the closest thing we are going to get to a classic X game on the PS2.

Many elderly and middle aged people bought into the Wii for the physical activity. Iwata is aware that there is a gap in the market that Nintendo can take advantage of, explore, and expand on.

On a side note, many of the mobile users simply aren't aware of the splendor that is Nintendo. Releasing a demo of NSMBU and DK: Tropical Freeze on the mobile app market could potentially hook people into buying a 3DS and Wii U for the real experience.

Sega's poor track record and the Wii U's paltry user base are going to hurt sales. Sega certainly got our attention but for all of the wrong reasons. There is a slim chance this might be a gem but it is too difficult to tell at this point.

I guess Sakurai found Lucario's aura gimmick too irresistable. A missed opportunity to bring in a new Pokemon with a similar physique while saving roster space. I can only hope that Mewtwo returns and that his moveset is updated like Bowser's in Brawl. Bowser got a lot of buffs to make him more competitive so it's possible Mewtwo could get the same treatment. :)

@Yorumi Well, people "say" they don't want to buy a $500 dollar console but they do. The PS4 is not only about to surpass the Wii U's sales, but it hasn't even been on the market as long either.
@MysticX Exactly. Nintendo isn't doing anything wrong on the software side of things. Their problem resides in console hardware and how it turns off graphics nazi's and 3rd party developers.

@Andrewroxsox You're absolutely right.
Releasing a more powerful console under a new name would've solved all of their problems. 3rd party developers wouldn't feel like they would have to make sacrifices developing on their console and core gamers can get all of the same games they would normally get on other consoles all while enjoying the splendor of Nintendo games.

It sounds like Shigeru is more interested in the idea of experimenting with new and exciting concepts--in other words he wants to continue building on Mario Galaxy.

I'm glad that the galaxy line of Mario games has potential to live on as its own series. I too believe that there is still so much room for galaxy to grow and improve. It'd be a shame to let the unique style of platforming and orchestra stop here. :)

Nintendo needs to run similar "Wii would like to play" spots on the television to showcase what the console is all about. This would put many of the previous consumers minds at ease to show that the Wii U still possesses the same great features the Wii had plus HD and a unique tablet controller.

From a marketing standpoint, it makes sense that the Wii U scene has been dormant. Once the 3DS fully enjoys its success, we'll start to see more blockbusters coming for the Wii U. This is all about your wallet, folks.

Brilliant caption!

The Wii U could never have the same commercial success as the Wii. It lacked the novelty and landscape its predecessor had. Nintendoland was a nice launch title but it certainly isn't Wii Sports, which could be another indicator of underwhelming console sales.

As Mario Kart 8's release draws nearer, we may start to see some TV spots showcasing what the Wii U has to offer.

@Hetsumani It will be exciting to learn how X&Y handles the changes. I haven't seen or read anything that confirms it, but I'm certain GameFreak will make the older Pokemon available through migration and mini-games. Have no fear, they've got everything taken care of. :)

Onett commented on More Than 1500 Cheaters Took Part in Pokémon'...:

I can only hope that Pokemon X & Y will not allow the transfer of ANY Pokemon from previous games for various reasons.

The level of sophistication Pokemon Generators have reached trick the game into thinking generated Pokemon with perfect IV's/EV's are genuine, thus allowing them to enter tournaments and wifi battles. Think of the number of cheaters that went undetected!

@EarthboundBenjy This is bad because it is unfair to the players who took the time to earn their strong Pokemon. Some players even go as far as purchasing older games to catch a Pokemon that is only able to learn a certain move from that generation just to breed it. It takes a massive investment of time to breed moves, natures and IV's into a Pokemon and it would be disheartening to allow a generator to participate. Even if the generated Mons stats are possible, it still isn't fair to players who earned their strong Pokemon through playing the game.

I can only assume with the introduction of "FAIRY" type and all the changes that brings will mean that stats, moves and a variety of other things will be re-allocated in X & Y. This is great news because Pokemon from previous generations (I assume) will be non-transferable! We will be given a clean, cheater free slate!

@Yoshi3DS Exactly. Which is why I enjoy the concept of hard work and earning strong Pokemon. That is what makes the game rewarding and sets players apart from each other. I'm also glad GameFreak is making breeding, EV's and IV's a bit more accessible. Now you won't have to invest an unhealthy amount of time hatching 100's of eggs for that strong Pokemon. :)

Looks like a Wii U battle simulator of the same ilk as Pokemon Battle Revolution. It wouldn't surprise me if this were one of the stages for a 'street battle.'

If this is an actual fighting game, I'd have to tip my hat to GameFreak for making such a bold move. I'm not quite sure how this is going to unfold. Fighting games aren't really my cup of tea, but it should be interesting to see how the character roster and move sets are handled.

The logo of the fist at the right of the image suggests that the Street Colosseum could be a fighting type gym. The logo could also be insinuating a fighting tournament exclusive to 'fighting type' Pokemon, hence 'Pokken Fighters' or 'Pokken Tournament.' This would also explain why we only see Lucario and Blaziken, both have 'fighting' in their typing.

@haniwa A lot of it has to do with the market. Everybody is piss scared to step outside of the proverbial box to develop anything with a hint of originality because it is too much of a risk.

@mastersworddude Exactly. I found it a bit odd that Kyle thought the violence aspect of Smash would hurt Nintendo. However, I agree with his point that showcasing a decade old GameCube game like Melee doesn't benefit Nintendo. Melee outshining Brawl on the competitive scene may also be perceived negatively.

Capcom doesn't have any passion for any Megaman project. ALL of them were canceled.

Wasn't Keiji Inafune complaining about the lack of creative freedom anyway? I'm pretty sure that was one of his reasons for leaving Capcom. Perhaps that could explain why the project ended up such an awkward failure? Sounds quite feasible to me. :)

@LzQuacker It sounds to me like you have more of a personal problem with Let's Players. Your argument deteriorated to 'they simply don't need it.' That is an opinion that I don't agree with. I believe that any kind of publicity is good publicity, no matter how big or small.

Secondly, the reason why many of the bigger youtubers are upset is because this ad revenue claim discourages them to invest time in the creation of a video when they could play something non-nintendo and make adsense money. Sure, smaller youtubers can make videos without feeling the hurt because they never had the audience to generate profit in the first place. As a result the likelihood of a great Nintendo product reaching the eyes and ears of a wider audience is decreased. You'd be a fool to believe that Let's Plays have no profound impact on sales.

Face it, the decision makes them look desperate. Let's plays are a much stronger form of advertisement that costs them nothing to make outside of developing the game.

Does Nintendo need let's players? Maybe?
Does this hurt Nintendo? Probably.
Are youtubers making a big deal? Probably.

@19Robb92 I can't believe I didn't realize that Retro was a subsidiary of Nintendo. Either way, I can't imagine Retro making another Mario game after the large amount of Mario games we've seen in recent months. The only time Capcom got together with Nintendo to 'officially' work on a Zelda title was for Minish Cap & Four Swords which was around 2004. Does anybody know if they got together for another project since?

Onett commented on Nintendo To Reveal Retro's New Wii U Game "In ...:

There is absolutely no way Nintendo would let a 3rd party developer touch The Legend of Zelda or Super Mario Bros. Those are the only two remaining IP's that are still developed first party. Almost all of Nintendo's IP's have been thrown out to 3rd party developers. I'm willing to bet that it is Star Fox U. It's been far too long and Star Fox U would act as a great introduction to the use of the game pad for newcomers.

@THIZZLERS209 There is no Star Fox Wii. :)

@SwissChris There is most certainly a need to buy this game. Sega All Stars is a great game but it lacks the same level of polish that Mario Kart games have. It would be foolish to turn down a racing game that is, without a doubt, going to have a huge online community.

I'll admit that I'm a little disappointed that there pulling away from the stage show. Watching the Nintendo conference became something more than just business; it was like a holiday, a treat that I looked forward to every year. Sure the NintendoDirect will take its place, but it won't be the same as the stage show and the magic that came with it.

I will reserve all judgement of this strategy until I see how it plays out. This may very well be a more effective course of action.

This isn't a surprise. Anybody who thinks otherwise needs to learn more about the industry in general. Nintendo and its subsidiaries have a ton of projects to work on all while concerning themselves with their future prospects. As the demand for quality games becomes higher, the greater the demand for resources and time to develop them will become.

Let's hope that the development of Mario Kart Wii U doesn't get jeopardized for the sake of bolstering the Wii U's lineup sooner rather than later. Mario Kart 3DS's potential suffered for the sake of boosting the handhelds sales.

Onett commented on New Mewtwo Form Revealed For Pokémon X & Y:

This raises some red flags. The guys at GameFreak had to reach as far back as Gen 1 and mess with Mewtwo just to make something new? It makes me wonder what other bold changes they've made. At some point they have to realize that 'more' Pokemon can be a bad thing since many of them never get used for various reasons. Take a moment to think about that.

Wake up GameFreak. Pokemon needs to 'evolve' in more ways than just one. Here is an idea, make it an action RPG and reboot the series starting from Red and Blue versions and release it on the 3DS/Wii U. Profit. Point is, Pokemon needs to break new ground like the Mario series did with Mario Galaxy. I'm pleased that X&Y are in 3D, but I'm afraid it won't be enough to win me over if there aren't major stat balances made.

An easy solution to making the NSMB series more enjoyable would be to:
1.) Change the god awful soundtrack. Music is key to provoking emotion and engrossing the player into the experience.
2.) Expand the character selection and give them unique abilities/attributes much like Mario Bros. 2. Make Peach, Toad, Luigi, Mario and maybe even Wario playable and suddenly you've got yourself an entirely different game with a different storyline.

I'm curious if GameFreak will make a bold move similar to the jump from G/S to R/S/E in terms of the reallocation of stats, typing, abilities and moves. Ubisoft's lack of faith is somewhat understandable. However, the decision make it multiplatform is premature. E3 couldn't come any sooner.
