Mach-X commented on Iwata Shoulders Blame for Low 3DS Sales, Cuts ...:

@20 Your post is a perfect example of biased hyperbole, something too many people on this forum are guilty of. First off, my ZuneHD has an OLED screen, it is absolutely GORGEOUS has sat overnight in my car in both intense canadian winter AND 90+ summer weather. And it is still pristine. The Vita's specs/launch titles have not even finalized and you've already passed judgement on it because you're a nintendo fan. I bought my DS 5 years ago, and it has largely sat and collected dust because other than Mario Kart and NSMB, I have not had any interest in it because the games that made the original gameboy so great are missing. Maybe I've grown up a bit, but games like Harvest Moon or Max Wright don't intrigue me. I miss the shmups and beatemups of the old days. I'm passing on the 3DS in favour of the Vita for those reasons. With the Vita, I can buy the two awesome PSP God of War games, and there will probably be more, as well as the fact the Vita will be powerful enough for some good fps action, with its dual thumbsticks. I don't buy consoles just because they are made by one company. I buy the one I feel will give me the games I like. In this case, it looks like the Vita will get my portable dollars.

Mach-X commented on Talking Point: Should Nintendo Try to Recaptur...:

Actually it's pretty simple, really. A hardcore gamer loves video games. A hardcore gamer is somebody who will rip through the latest Gears of War, but will be just as likely to fire up his 2600 and try to beat his last score in megamania. Or fire up his wii and play some Bit.Trip. And then try to beat the nasty japanese version of Super Mario 2. And then maybe relax with some Diablo 2 on his/her netbook. Hey! I think I just described myself! The whole 'graphical prowess' argument eludes me. Is Super Mario Galaxy not a breathtaking game? Have I missed something? Are 1080 lines of resolution necessary for the blocky retro look of Bit. Trip.? I also point yet again to the massive power consumption and heat concerns of the 360/PS3. That doesn't bode well for the longevity of the hardware at ALL. As we've seen from the numerous hardware failures when these systems are used extensively. For most of gaming's history, the power demands of gaming consoles remained relatively flat, despite the increasing capabilities with each generation. The PS2 requiring a mere 14 watts of power to run. As does the Wii. The 360/PS3 require a monstrous 200 watts of power consumption, to the point the POWER supplies need fans. That's more power than 3 incandescent light bulbs! What will be the power demands of the next gen?

I laugh SO hard when these discussion come up, because people can just be so narrow minded. 'iphone make cartridge dead!' 'itunes make album dead', 'sirius xm make fm radio dead' '45 make lp dead' 'fm make am radio dead' they believe things will be 'THIS WAY' or 'THAT WAY' and that's it. Yet, the lp survives. The compact disc survives. The game cartridge survives. When will people get that there can be more than one way of doing things? Because the price of flash has dropped, sony's NGP is going back to a cart style media, rather than the bulky UMD's. The other thing people need to stop doing is assuming everybody on earth has massive unlimited connections to the internet. When overages cost somewhere around $2.50 per gig, it's rather hard to fathom downloading a 50 gig bluray game isn't it?

Mach-X commented on Child Pornography Law TKOs DOAD Release in Swe...:

Whenever this type of thing comes up, people get all up in arms 'what they're doing is ridiculous, blah blah blah'. Nintendo chose not to release the game in those countries because they were concerned about breaking laws in those nations regarding how children are portrayed in media. Which means Nintendo are doing what a large company is SUPPOSED to do, which is obey the law. Those laws were established for a reason, whether you like them or not. We are all subject to laws in our various nations, some good some not. We all have different ratings and classification systems. For example, in Canada, age of sexual consent is as low as 14 provided the two people are between 14 and 16. However just because a 14 year old can have sex, it is still illegal for that person to be in any pornographic material until the age of 18. Of course that is an extreme example, as obviously the game isn't pronographic in nature, nor are the characters real, just saying in some way nintendo feels that the portrayal could be illegal in those nations. And they can't simply breach those laws because gamers feel it's unfair. That is up to the people in those nations to pressure their political representatives to have the law amended to better represent public values.

Mach-X commented on Rumour: Project Cafe Controller Contains a Camera:

I don't know why you guys are buying into all the hype. Nintendo isn't stupid enough to repeat the mistake SNK made in the 90's by selling a system at such a high price nobody could afford it. Think about it, why would Nintendo sell a system with the same capabilities as a 360 that can be had for $200 for $600 with all the rumoured extras. Rest easy. It will be a nice system, will have some new features, but it won't be the overpriced juggernaut that all these rumours are pointing towards.

Oh, and since it will work in your PS2 AND PS3 as well, hardly a 'beat up' console.Hell play it on your pc. AND you get Final Fantasy 5 AND 6 plus a soundtrack. That's an absolute steal for $15 rather than pay $8 for the VC version. But whatever, keep waiting.

Heh, the SNES hardware was a logical extension of the NES, as was its name. Mode 7 was added because those effects were being used in arcade machines. I suppose the shoulder triggers could be innovative. As for Gamecube, the Xbox and Playstation 2 had pressure sensitive triggers.

Mach-X commented on Feature: The SLG3000 and the Glorious Return o...:

@11 I guess you've never connected an nes or snes to a modern hdtv? Game systems before ps2/xbox 1 ran at definitions called 'LDTV' which is basically half of SDTV's 480 lines. Analog tvs would simply display data every other line since they don't do any kind of scaling whatsoever. Games were designed with those black lines in mind with certain colour levels and contrast. When connected to an hdtv, the line doublers/triplers ignore the blank data lines and simply double up on the visible ones, which changes the overall contrast/colour level of the image. It appears that this device puts in actual display information that is black so that it essentially transforms the 240 line (or 224 line or 256 line) output of an older system into an actual 480 line image with every other line simply painted black. It isn't a matter of 'looking like great old days' it's a matter of correcting the output so that the scaler in an hdtv sees it properly, rather than ignoring the blank lines, which I feel is a major fault in todays hdtv scalers.
Now using this with a ps2/xbox/dreamcast/gamecube would make no sense since those systems displayed a full 480 line image so you would sort of be cutting their effective resolution in half.

Are you guys still at this?! Seriously? Over an off the cuff remark that gets splattered by the media all over the place? You don't think Nintendo people say stupid things like 'sony are a bunch of aholes' 'ps3 sux' and whatever other gibberish. I'm not even a Sony fan, don't own a PS3 nor a PSP, I just like to try and be the voice of reason when this stuff gets reported. I can't believe how silly people are being bringing up numbers too! It's hilarious. Ok here's one '140 million ps2's and counting'. Here's one more '100 million ps1's'. I couldn't even begin to fathom their television sales. Actually I might buy an NGP that thing looks amazing, plus you can buy PSP games online and run them from media. Hmmmm how many complaints per week get lodged over nintendo's download service? Really guys I'm not trying to be a jerk, but let's call it like it is, games like Nintendogs and Harvest Moon and Pokemon are babysitter games. Comparing a months sales of a BRAND NEW system to one that's six years old? C'mon guys I thought us NL members had more sense than this.....

I find it amusing that off the cuff remarks like this get printed as news and all the little fanboys get all up in arms over it. Every silly sony quote NL prints is predictably followed by rants of "GRRRRAAAAAWWWWRRRR SONY SUCKS GRRRR NINTENDO GOOD". In all honesty his quote has some merit. My DS collects dust because after New Super Mario they decided to focus on cats and dogs and pokemon. Kind of wish Id gotten a PSP and be looking forward to Ghosts of Sparta. The next gen portable has me rather intrigued with a return to cartridge type media. If current gen PSP games get offered on the PSN they just might have an interested buyer......

Mach-X commented on Fils-Aime: Next Home Console Unlikely to be 3D:

I don't think the next console will be that much of a mystery at all. Nintendo's past shows that they choose to go smaller and more efficient. Case in point: Genesis vs SNES, SNES used a lower powered CPU and allowed for games to upgrade the system's abilities with better chips as tech got better. Saturn/PSX vs N64, instead of clunky, inefficient 1x cd roms, they stuck with carts and simpler hardware design, xbox vs gamecube, when the xbox was big (heh heh pun fully intended) gamecube was smaller, more efficient. BTW since xbox classic was HD and DD 5.1 out of the box, how come nobody complained about the lack of HD in the PS2? 360/PS3 vs Wii. gargantuan power sucking behemoths with hardware issues, compared to small efficient and trouble free wii console. I think the next system is pretty easy to figure out, really. The nunchuck/wiimote will be uncorded using bluetooth, and I would bet the farm that it will use some type of design around the Tegra series of all in one chips like in the ZuneHD which can generate nice looking 720p visuals without being a power hungry hog. And don't be surprised by a switch back to some type of solid state media similar to sony's next gen portable, which will offer up to 4 gigs per game card, which is already close to what single layer dvd games are now (4.7 gigs). I can see them doing away with easily copyable dvd discs, and I wouldn't even bet on any type of hard drive unless SSD drives become inexpensive enough by then. Dolby Digital might be included, but don't count pro logic out, as dolby still develops it and continues to push what can be done with a standard stereo mix (they now have height channels!), and it requires less circuitry in the console itself. Think something PSOne or PC Engine sized delivering HD visuals while maintaining a small footprint both physically and power consumption wise. And forget about 3d, do people with 3d tvs REALLY sit around watching tv all day with those glasses on? The only issue I see with this idea, is if they switch to Tegra, it will throw backwards compatibility with Wii/GC out, so who knows, I could be completely full of it :P

Mach-X commented on Review: Phantasy Star (Virtual Console / Maste...:

I'm in agreement with most of these comments, Phantasy Star is truly an epic 8 bit game with graphics that easily come close to a lot of 16 bit rpgs. If you compare this to FF1 or Dragon Warrior it's hard to believe they came from the same generation of consoles, it's so pretty, especially in the battle scenes. If you're playing this for the first time tho, get yourself maps of those dungeons. The pseudo 3d thing is cool, but the later dungeons are ridiculously stupid with steps you can take that transport your elsewhere into an identical looking spot and you have no idea where you are since every step you take looks the same as the last.

and @adamant, the FM sound is present in ALL versions of games like Phantasy Star or Double Dragon or Altered Beast, oddly enough Sega never removed it from the game data when porting it to other regions, they just never included the FM hardware in other regions consoles. Stupid move really.
In fact, anybody with a Master System, OR Genesis(Mega Drive) with Power Base Converter, a guy in australia makes boards you can attach to euro or NA systems to unlock that FM sound. If anybody is interested, info here
http://www.smspower.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10841 tho they are handmade and somewhat costly as a result.

OOOOPS, my apologies, adamant, FM sound is NOT present in exported versions of Phantasy Star. It had to be removed due to the english translation of the game filling up the cart data to its 512k limit. Again sorry bout that mistake. However FM sound is still left in other exported games, do they play with FM sound on VC?

Wow I can't believe the elitism this article has inspired among my fellow NL users. Calling iphone users 'dumb' and mindless is the kind of tasteless closemindedness usually reserved for sony fans! You think cheap crummy games are new?! How many terrible atari 2600 games nearly killed the industry in 1983? You ever play Wrath of the Black Manta or Bible Games on NES? Cheap crummy games have always been around. And who are we to tell Facebook fans they ought not to play those simple games that they enjoy? Nintendo just hates it when they face competition, whether it was from Sega in the 16 bit years, or their bobbled failure with sony resulting in the Playstation 1/2 climbing to the top of the industry for a very long time.

Interesting that the Gamecube has 3d hardware in it, which means the wii by virtue probably does too. I wonder if it's the same 3d used by 3dtvs tho. I'm not sold on the whole craze anyway, Ive tried 3dtvs with the glasses and while yes the effect is quite stunning, I don't think it's something I'd use all the time or even consider essential. I do love the idea that the 3ds doesn't require glasses for its effect and that it is adjustable.

Mach-X commented on Iwata Talks 3DS Expectations and Wii Successor:

And as far as the 'next Wii' is concerned, I'm not sure if I would even want it to outpower the current 360/ps3. While those systems have amazing graphic potential, they are also mini space heaters consuming over ten times the electricity that a wii does. And all that heat isn't good for a system's durability. We need not mention the RROD and failure rates of the 360, not to mention early PS3 units are starting to fail with the so called 'YLOD'. These things are barely 5 years old at most. Meanwhile I have yet to hear any major concerns about the Wii's durability. And as far as 'looking like gamecube games', that's because there's a huge glut of shovelware that doesn't show off the wii's potential. How about playing Super Mario Galaxy or Kart in widescreen to show off what the gamecube CANT do in 'extended definition' :P Yes I know that the PS2 and Gamecube can technically do 480p/widescreen, but they weren't designed specifically for it like the Wii is. Again, I love the fact the wii is a sleek efficient powerful machine that only consumes 14 watts while running full tilt, while 360/ps3 can top out at 200 watts. That being said, IF nintendo can somehow upgrade the Wii's hardware to HD without turning it into a mini cutting torch, I'm all for it. Hmmm.....nvidia's Tegra chips could be the answer.....

But how about fireball ability while small? Yes I've done this, you need to be fighting bowser in any -4 level and be fire mario. Run under/over bowser and stand next to the switch. Now this takes practice and timing, what you need to do is jump and hit the switch and bowser at exactly the same time. If it works, you'll hear the 'shrink' noise and bowser will fall. When you start the next level you will be small, orange and white and wield fireballs!

Oh I love it when tech specs are leaked and you hear the thumps of soapboxes hit the ground as suddenly everybody knows exactly what a piece of hardware will do, and can't WAIT to pontificate that to us. First off, don't assume that every OS is like Windows 7, that is feature laden with oodles of bells and whistles. Don't believe me? Try using an android phone. Mine has a 500mhz arm cpu and the os runs lightning quick and is completely unobtrusive. At first I questioned why nintendo would use two cpus instead of one more powerful one, then i smacked myself because it makes perfect sense with dual screens as the DS did. Also I'm not sure if I'd go so far as to put it up with the 360, but it should have no problems doing good 3d with the much-lower-than-hd res it will probably have. But please nintendo, could we at least have VGA (320x240) resolution?

Lol, come on europe, you should be blaming your government for adopting PAL in the first place, when the rest of the world used NTSC. While I'm sure somewhere in history there's a logical reason for it, considering that hollywood is the center of the filmmaking world, why did europe adopt a different standard than hollywood? As far as 'being superior to NTSC in EVERY way', come on. A few extra lines of resolution does not make it 'superior in EVERY way'. Slower refresh, an aspect ratio not compatible with film/tv being produced in hollywood. so you get a few extra lines of resolution, but everything being made looks/runs like crap on it. Hardly 'superior in EVERY way' XD

@swerd_murd and others: The youtube videos and reports of the FCTwin having sound/colour issues are old. The latest FCTwin has flawless NES sound reproduction. And people need to stop calling these clones 'emulators'. These do not run any kind of NES/SNES software emulators. They have aftermarket 3rd party processors/hardware that directly reads the game cartridge information. That is why the FCTwin has TWO seperate motherboard sections for NES/SNES. In fact, I have my own video review of the latest FCTwin here:

Mach-X commented on Project Needlemouse to Focus Solely on Sonic?:

Why is it that the game hasn't produced a SINGLE screenshot, and there are people ALREADY bagging on it? It's kind of annoying when you have people who just want to not like something automatically, just so they can say later on 'see I told you before it was gonna suck'. As if they are some great seer or something. You act like there hasn't been a single good sonic game since the Genesis. If you really believe that, why are you paying attention? You're obviously no longer a fan, anyhow. 1994 was a long time ago, it should have become obvious to you that you are a geezer and aren't EVER going to like anything new.
All of that being said, there HAVE been some stumbles and mistakes along the way. Sonic Adventure was one fatastic play from start to finish. But the voice acting was aweful, sonic shouldn't be talking. SA2, not so good, those knuckles stages are AWEFUL and are what have kept me from going back and playing it. But there have ALSO been moments of greatness. Have any of you haters played the Sonic Advance games? Sonic Rush DS? 5 very solid outings, little to no voice acting, engaging characters such as Blaze who made Sonic Rush fun twice. And why so much hatred for Sonic Secret Rings? That game is BEAUTIFUL, very fast and fun once you got used to the controls. Haven't tried Unleashed yet, I bet it's nowhere near as bad as people say. In fact, I would have to say of the main sonic games (not sonic R or those team games) the only really terrible outings were Sonic 360 and Black Knight. (I don't like SA2, but fans seem to). Not really any reason to automatically condemn this new outing, other than you enjoy being one of the 'early haters'.

Overkill is just plain fun. The whole campy 'b' horror production they pulled off is top notch. Have any of you haters even listened to the awesome soundtrack in it? Or do you remember what fun is? I'm wondering why some of you even bought a wii. Wii music has sold near 4 million copies. Wii music. Some of the stuff here doesn't even make SENSE. 'I don't like overkill cause it's a rail shooter'. And you're calling Sega narrow minded? 'I want a new streets of rage'. You noticed MadWorld is a beat'em up right? If MadWorld is 'too repetitive' how in the hell would a new streets of rage not be repetitive, it's kinda sorta the nature for a beat'em up. A new PSO? Yea cause you know PSU is selling like hot cakes on the 360. The whole POINT of Overkill or MadWorld is the production and over the top campiness, which obviously people here have never seen movies like 'Kill Bill' the 'Dawn of the Dead' remake or how about that classic 'Natural Born Killers'. Did I mention 'Sin City'?

Mach-X commented on Nintendo Download: Rayman, Notebooks, Stress B...:

@smaman my apologies, I did some further research, and it appears that some playstation games that didn't involve lengthy loading times would play redbook cd audio while the game was playing. Only a handful did. But because the playstation was the first home console powerful enough to offer 16bit sampling and high bandwith compressed audio, most psx games used compressed samples that could be streamed alongside game data rather than 'pause' cd audio to access data tracks. Because the psx could offer such high quality compressed audio, the game you are referring to could 'sound' like red book audio when other game sounds were going on. With that being said, I do still prefer some segacd or saturn games that played full redbook audio in all its glory while playing games, it's different for sure. Some will argue over the SNES sound since it also offered sample based over all 8 channels, but it topped out at a 32khz sampling rate, which isn't close to cd quality. The psx could do 44khz which made its audio much closer to cd quality.

Mach-X

#44

Mach-X commented on Nintendo Download: Rayman, Notebooks, Stress B...:

@smaman actually that's a common misconception about the playstation, psx games do not 'load' the game then simply play cd audio tracks during game play. they stream a compressed combination of music/data, CDXA I think it's called for fmv's, in game music is simply compressed samples loaded into memory. There aren't any actual 'cd audio' tracks on psx discs. This is why I wish more gamers had experienced 'true' cd audio consoles like the SegaCD and Saturn. Final Fight CD on the SegaCD is AWESOME with its full redbook audio soundtrack, and Radiant Silvergun on the Saturn is equally amazing sounding with full redbook orchestral music. It's part of the reason psx games would have 'skipping' problems during fmv's because they were directly streamed, rather than 'buffered' like other consoles.
