Smart new additions on display here! And it doesn't even bother me that it looks so similar to Super Mario Galaxy since they had already tried out this kind of gameplay with the cancelled Sonic Xtreme.
I know I'll like the Wii U version, but I refuse to trust the 3DS version based solely on that trailer. The handheld versions of Sega's games have all played like an afterthought lately.
This game has a pretty ambitious concept, which always makes for a good trailer. The question is whether the gameplay in the end product can deliver on its promise.
There must be a lot of pressure when it comes to getting a playable demo ready in time for E3, especially if the development team hasn't had the time to work out all the kinks yet. It kinda scares me to think about it, considering I hope to become a game developer myself in the future. Brrr...
Forget Tom Nook, what about Isabelle? She's the secretary of every town, she decides what kinds of laws the mayor can instate, and the mayor has no means of replacing her! Suspicious...
I couldn't decide which game to play first, so I just shuffled their gift boxes back and forth on the home menu until I'd forgotten which was which, then played the first one I opened.
He personally builds and upgrades your house for you. Without even asking about your credit, he gives you a loan for it with no interest or deadlines whatsoever. And then, if you ever get around to paying him for your house, he builds you a golden statue of yourself and charges you nothing for it. Oh, that scoundrel! Has he no shame?
As a platformer, it looks decent, but generic. As a Pac-Man game, it looks like a waste of time.
If you ask me, the only way Pac-Man is going to become relevant again is if he gets a new game or two that uses the gameplay of the original as a starting point and takes it in a compelling new direction, kind of like what BIT.TRIP: BEAT did for those old paddle games. One can dream...
Same-sex marriage for men, but not women? That's actually pretty rich. Imagine the conversation:
"So, what did we decide about same-sex marriage in this game?" "Well, it looks like we can't address it in a way that will satisfy everybody, so we're kind of stuck." "Huh. Say, I wonder if it's possible to address the subject in a way that satisfies nobody..."
They know that Yoshis can come in different colors, right...?
Aside from that, their prototype looks pretty good! They should fix up the controls, add some sort of hook to make the gameplay a little more focused, and... what's that? Oh, that's the game? They call this a game and they are going to sell it for money? Ewww...
Forgotten... memories? Doesn't that sound a little unremarkable? Kind of like that DS game from way back when with the subtitle "Memories of the Past". It's like, you know... duh?
Oh, what's that, a new developer? Oh yeah, sounds cool.
WayForward or not, I'm skipping this one. Those little blue runts are irritating and not much else.
Nothing against WayForward themselves of course, they might not be around today if they weren't willing to slap together the occasional licensed throwaway title. Heck, the fact that some of those licensed games are actually worth playing just makes WayForward more impressive to me.
I usually don't have much success with banana peels in Mario Kart. Heck, I usually end up slipping over the same ones I dropped the previous lap. Am I the only one...?
How to deal with people who don't like a new Pokémon
Claim that for every new Pokémon they have a problem with, you can name 5 from Generation I that are more ridiculous. When they choose one, recite the following list:
1. Jinx 2. Jinx 3. Jinx 4. Mr. Mime 5. JINX!!!
If they continue to argue, respond to each of their points by saying "Jinx!" in an exasperated tone. Repeat until they give up and decide not to bring up the subject with you ever again.
I saw this at PAX, too. The game looks gorgeous, and the move to using elements of the environment to solve puzzles rather than limited-use tools gave it a bit of a Wario Land vibe. Sold!
I love how so many scenes had something fly into the foreground as a subtle jab against gratuitous 3D camera work. I'll have to watch it again just to count them all.
I'm not too interested in Dead Island or Saints Row myself, but I will admit this trend is starting to worry me. I mean, Nintendo's console is finally in HD and it's still too hard to give it some multi-platform love?
@Geonjaha@Radbot42 Presumably, this game will not take five years to develop, like Cave Story did. If that's the case, I personally don't mind if it doesn't quite reach the same graphical heights.
Just recently started playing the first Beyond Good & Evil, and I can definitely see what all the fuss is about!
Still, with Rayman Legends, Assassin's Creed IV, and Watch_Dogs still on the way, I'm not holding my breath that we'll hear any real talk about a sequel any time soon.
If he was looking for licensees that would help him make something using the idea he patented, I don't think it's fair to call him a patent troll. If I'm not mistaken, a patent troll simply files or purchases patents in order to obtain money from patent infringement lawsuits, with no intention of actually manufacturing a product. From what it says in this article, I could probably have sympathy for either side of this one.
Having new stuff in a game is always fun. Ideally, though, shouldn't the challenge of acquiring said new stuff also be fun? Shouldn't it be more than something you muscle through to avoid spending real money?
Think of Pokémon! You don't catch the best ones just by leveling up enough or saving money for weeks. You catch them by talking to NPCs that know about them, looking over your map, bringing the right items, teaching your pokémon the right moves, venturing into treacherous territory, carefully wearing down your mark, and throwing one pokéball after another until the thing admits your superiority! If you would pay actual money – in any amount – to skip all that, then the answer is not micro-transactions: the answer is play something better!
Good games don't make us do this just to draw the whole thing out longer. Good games put us through these challenges to make us assign more value to the rewards we get for overcoming them. If we care so much more about the rewards than the gameplay it takes to get them, then something has gone truly wrong.
I don't mean to say that there could not possibly be benefits to micro-transactions, but the future looks pretty murky right now...
@SMEXIZELDAMAN That's the right attitude. When I see this kind of thing, though, it usually sends me a message that whoever made the game wasn't motivated to sell it on the merits of the gameplay, so they resorted to sex appeal to draw a little more attention from the adolescent male demographic. It may not bother everyone, but it bothers me.
