Latte commented on PolyKid's Indie 3D Platformer Poi Is Coming To...:

I hate to be the negative guy, but the game's art does not look good.

I know this is a very early build, so it will look better later on, but it saddens me that there is absolutely no sign of any artistic direction whatsoever. Even if it looks "better" later on, if they do not take the art in any direction, it will still look bland and boring.

Aside from the strange physics, the game does look fun, but I doubt I'll be supporting this if the art remains directionless and dead.

EDIT: The above trailer says it's the pre-alpha version. I'm not quite sure what exactly the stages of game development mean, but if it's normal for there to be absolutely no focus on art in such an early version, then disregard this comment.

@vitalemrecords - Firstly, I'm not sure why you think that you have a say in which games are real and which games aren't. The games you listed are, by definition, video games.

Secondly, of course you can whine; nobody's going to pin you down to keep you from your keyboard if you try to. You end up sounding like a Facebook rant, but nobody can stop you.

"I do realize that. And you don't have to read my comment."
There's a difference between what he did and what you did. You posted a nonsensical rant about how video games you dislike are "fake," while he was giving you genuinely good advice.

@Quorthon - I don't know if you know the entire story, so I will explain what I know; please correct me if I'm wrong. The sprites were labelled as free-to-use for HS/college projects, but required permission for any commercial products. NPS claims that his brother--a co-developer of the game--said that they were okay to use for Jumpy Cat. I'm not saying that excuses art theft, nor am I saying that's what actually happened. If what NPS said is true, though, his ethics can hardly be questioned. If anything, question his business practices; he should have checked to make sure they were allowed to use the sprites.

Yes, I did just say in my last reply to you that he was definitely lazy. I do not disagree with that.

You are correct in saying everything can receive criticism. The point I was attempting to make is that unskilled devs require criticism, not insults--or something of that effect. I was getting the idea that you were using the fact that his works are poor as a justification for the insults he has been receiving.

I didn't say that someone had to die in order for someone to be criticized I didn't even mention criticism in that sentence; I was referring to people insulting* NPS over a game they dislike, and how minuscule of a deal it really is.

*Please note that I'm not talking about criticism. I do want people to criticize his works

Trust me when I say I don't doubt it can be damaging. I'm fine with people being annoyed, I'm fine with people being mad, and I'm fine with people wanting the game to stop existing. That said, I am completely against people insulting the dev for such silly reasons. Simply not buying the game is far more effective and much less childish.

I think you and I are arguing over something that--in reality--we both agree on. I doubt I'm getting my points across well enough to convey that, though.

@Quorthon - Someone creating an artistically devoid game means that constructive criticism can be thrown out the window and insults should take their place? No, of course not; that's not how criticism works.
You don't criticize skilled developers, you criticize unskilled developers in hopes that they will someday be better.

Questionable ethics? If you're referring to the stolen assets, nobody can know whether or not they were purposefully stolen. Give NPS the benefit of the doubt, because--as far as I know--there is no reason to doubt that this entire incident was simply a misunderstanding and a mistake.

I have seen no evidence of him being greedy, nor have I seen him "thrusting" his games on anyone. He isn't tricking people into buying his games. Is he lazy? Definitely--there's no doubt about that. Greedy? Possibly, but I don't think you can be sure of that.

People have no reason to be mad at him. NPS didn't harm anyone. Nobody died. The world didn't end. He pulled the plug on this project, so all anyone can be mad at is Meme Run. The idea of being angry because a stupid game exists is more stupid than the game itself.
EDIT: I suppose people could be mad at how childish he's being. Then again, insulting someone solely because they're childish is pretty childish in itself.

I'd like to note that calling him out on being childish is definitely valid criticism. I'm not against that in any way.

@Quorthon - Please explain to me the complexity of this point I'm missing. As far as I can see, there is no point to miss. There's no point at all, actually.
While I'm all for constructive criticism, that obviously is not what is happening here.

Latte commented on Petit Computer Getting Programmed Out of the 3...:

I'm not going to lie, all of the dashes in this article made it difficult to read. Perhaps I'm just tired, but even after re-reading it multiple times I can't quite get what's being said at some points.

On the topic of Petit Computer, I'm excited for it. I picked up programming as one of my high school classes this year, and it's much more fun than I expected.
I believe I read that this PetCom has a tutorial, which is something the last PetCom was sorely lacking. I remember fiddling with the first PetCom's sprite editor for hours, then forgetting to save the sprite I made. That incident completely discouraged me, and I don't think I've opened the app since.

Progress..maybe? I wish this studio would spend more time on their (his?) games. It seems to me like they jump from project to project, never really polishing their games or putting much effort into them.

@noctowl - Being better at a game does make your opinion on said game more valid.
A knowledgeable opinion > an opinion made by someone who knows little about the ins and outs of the topic.

Also, perhaps you should stop making up things and using those made-up things as a reason for calling people pathetic.

@TeeJay - I kind of feel like ZSS has trouble actually executing the kill. I main Zelda and usually am able to kill the ZSSes I see on FG mode without even losing one stock because she gets me to 150%+ and simply cannot land a kill move.

That said, it may just be that I'm getting lucky with who I'm playing against.

Latte commented on Super Smash Bros. Pro Players Tackle the Probl...:

@JasonAnArgoNOT64 - I know that you didn't actually mean that Mario's fireballs were OP. My point was that a pro saying Mario's fireballs are OP for such silly reasons is not the same as a pro saying Diddy is OP for good reasons.
I agree that it's not a good idea to blindly believe people's words--even when they are pros--but Diddy being OP has been a topic of discussion within the Sm4sh community for awhile now.

Latte commented on Super Smash Bros. Pro Players Tackle the Probl...:

@JasonAnArgoNOT64 - I'm sure there is data to back up what's being said.

From what I know, Diddy is in a low risk/high reward-type situation, which is different from Mario's fireballs in the way that the fireballs are easy to counter and punish. Jump over them, reflect them, attack them, duck under them, etc.

Latte commented on Review: The Voice: I Want You (Wii U):

@DerpSandwich - Though pitch is rarely the problem when learning how to sing, I agree that it's cool. I also agree that there's textbook-style information that could be taught. My main concern with a "how to sing" game would be people doing the vocal exercises, warm-ups, etc. improperly, as that can damage a person's voice forever.

Latte commented on Review: The Voice: I Want You (Wii U):

@DerpSandwich - There are far too many aspects of singing (breath control, larynx control, soft palate control, tongue positioning, mouth shape, and tons more) to teach it efficiently through a video game.

The best they could do is a vocal warm-up application, which is basically what the Vocal Coach function appears to be. Vocal warm-ups do help, but they will not teach proper singing on their own.

This one has a manual? Definitely going to purchase it, then.

I bought the DSiWare PetCom and just could not figure it out. I'm sure if I had spent more time messing with it I could have, though I didn't feel like doing so after stumbling through the application's awkward sprite editor for hours, only to forget to save the sprite I had made.

@HappyHappyist - It really annoys and bothers me that many of the users commenting are acting as though they are actually better, as people, than those who do not know much (or even anything) about a system that came out before they were even born. I can understand being surprised, but puffing their chest out and looking down their nose at the people in the above video is stupid.

Yes, let's not only attack the appearance of a young teenager, but also use that attack to discredit her opinions on everything.

..Let's also make fun of the races of the kids in the video, and discredit anything and everything they say based on that!
Am I doing this right?
