Kind of a pity - MySims games (especially Agents and Kingdom) were amongst my favourites on Wii. Two of them for Wii U would've quite possibly gotten me to buy the console. Then again, there's already Lego CITY...

I've been playing the Steam beta of the game for a while now and I like it as a score-attack game. I'm very surprised by how well the random-generation works.

That said, my thoughts on Kickstarter... there was this one PC/iPad Kickstarter project that was seriously running behind, until one person donated some $10k or so that made the kickstarter succeed. Someone in the comments section there mentioned that if it had been the project lead himself, it wouldn't have been OK (since he apparently was not putting all that he had on the line). That sounds like a reasonable thought.

I don't know about social network games, but as for iOS and Android games, I am very much in favour of them. Lesser development expenses mean that small groups of enthusiasts have an easier way of getting involved without as much personal financial risk. Another question is, what is the worth of the extra polish on the game? It's tempting to just say "let the consumers decide which model they prefer."

I'm not interested in how much time and effort was spent in making a game. I'm interested in how much fun I'm having playing it for the price it cost me. As for "social gaming bubble" bursting... what if it's the "console/handheld game pricing" that bursts?

Kadunta commented on Review: TrackMania (Wii):

I bought it not long ago since Trackmania United didn't work on my PC any longer. So far it's been quite OK. I'm a bit disappointed in how the track names are given -- "Stadium A5"? "IslandC3"? I find that just plain lazy and boring.

Am I mistaken or is the 'banner' pic at the top of the page from the Bay area which was cut from the Wii game, right? If so, it feels a bit off, that's all.

Kadunta commented on MySims Head Ever Skyward with SkyHeroes:

Yeah, Morcubus was in MySims Kingdom and MySims Racing beside MySims Agents. I don't know if he was in the original MySims as well.

I'm a bit of a MySims fan myself, so I'm kind of interested in this one. But a lot depends on how this game can capture the feel. I suppose the closest match would be MySims Racing, since that's also an action game. Unfortunately that isn't my favourite game in the series. (I don't know how MySims Party compares, since I've never played it.)

Regarding that video... I'm kind of torn between wanting to hear Simlish vs having the lines read out loud in an understandable language -- which makes more sense in this kind of game in the heat of the battle. I think I spotted at least some Simlish-like voices in the video, though, so perhaps that voiceover was only for the trailer... I don't know.

Kadunta commented on Review: Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love (Wii):

This review made no difference for me in my plans to buy this game. Well, except maybe slightly increasing the price point I'll buy it at.

@Axoloth: I recall reading in some reviews (e.g., IGN) that only a PS2 version has the Japanese voiceover. The reviewer there was apparently satisfied with the voice actors, though. You might want to check a few other reviews for other opinions on that matter, though.

SNK Arcade Classics vol. 1 already contains Last Resort... but then again, since Metal Slug was on that volume, on the anthology and also on VC, I guess this doesn't completely overrule the chance of Last Resort coming to VC. But LR on the collection disc is enough for me.

I'm interested in seeing Blazing Star and Twinkle Star Sprites on Wii -- either on a collection disc or on VC.

Kadunta commented on Might The Next Zelda Sense Your Vitality?:

What the sensor could be used in games and not only in Zelda... I was thinking of the view swaying when aiming; the higher your heart rate, the more the view would move (even while keeping the aiming reticule in place relative to the screen). Of course, this might be a double penalty since you might already have trouble aiming.

If this came to Europe and I could get online with Wii at home, I'd probably be buying it. The game sounds rather similar to Dragon Quest Swords, though.

Kadunta commented on Trackmania Building Speed:

I can't help but to feel worried. One is that at least on PC the game requires precise controls. I don't know how it translates to Wii without GC or CC controller. Maybe Nunchuk's stick then? Regardless, I think that tilt control could be a disaster unless difficulty levels were dropped a lot.

Second is that at least on Trackmania United for PC, "online play" means you are doing time trial on the same track at the same time with other people's real-time ghosts. So no car-to-car collisions (which makes sense, since one unlucky bump means you'd have to restart the race from the starting grid). Personally, I don't mind, but I believe I've seen some reviewers gripe about this. Just in case some of you didn't know to expect this. Will this be different for the Wii edition? I don't know, but I wouldn't count on it.

@grensworthshero : That's exactly what I was thinking, especially the Onslaught part. I already have Zapper (which I pretty much never use) and Perfect Shot (which I am not fond of using with RE:UC), so I doubt I am going to buy this one, even if I do have plans to purchase RE:DC and/or DS:E.

Kadunta commented on Review: Horrible Histories: Ruthless Romans (Wii):

@Bahamut ZERO... games "people care about" are typically reviewed on n+1 other sites as well. I like to see reviews of more obscure games since it's possible the game might be better than I'd expect and without that, I'd completely miss it. This summer I got into contact with the Wii game "Diva Girls: Princess on Ice" by accident. The only clues I had as for what the game was like were the back cover, a trailer or two and just as many YouTube video clips. I ended up not even opening the wraps on the game since I had no clue what the game was like. And I still wonder if I would've liked the game -- it did support Balance Board according to the case cover.

How often can you save your game or place the game on hold to continue playing on another day? I wasn't too fond of Rogue Trooper's mission length without save points within levels; guess I've grown tired of playing more than half an hour at a time.

Kadunta commented on La Mulana Announcement and Trailer:

No European release mentioned? Hmmh. Well, I guess I should really try getting into the PC version then. I just wonder what the reception for this game will be like amongst reviewers and game players; the game looks deceptively simple platformer but I hear it's anything but simple and easy. Another thing is that if the graphical update and the listed extras are enough for people to want to pay for the game instead of downloading the freeware version.

Kadunta commented on Tales of Monkey Island Coming to WiiWare on Mo...:

If I decide to buy this game, I'll probably go for the Steam version... if all parts cost 1000 points, it's 50€ compared to the 33€ on Steam. Besides, Aardvark Soup put forth a great question, since I doubt the DRM stuff can account for the size difference alone.

I remember playing this on MSX back in the early 90s. It was fun then... or so I think. Still, I played it even then only with a friend. But maybe the fond memories are just nostalgia speaking. I don't think I'd spend the money on the game today.

I'd rather read 1/10 reviews to tell me to avoid some games than see them just ignored. And sometimes what looks like shovelware might turn out to be a surprisingly fun game... not that I'm saying this applies to Incoming! (based on this review, I really doubt it).

Things the gameplay trailer I saw on YouTube tell us to do... If you see a mysterious hand looking like that of a corpse vanishing under a bed, do go wave your arm there.

I don't know what "on-rails horror games" are really like, but I heard guesses on some boards (IGN? YouTube?) that this looks like one.

This is the type of arcade game I like: simple to learn, tough to master. GW:G was definitely not the worst way I could've spent my money.

I wonder if anyone would make a Crimsonland/Notrium-clone for WiiWare...

Kadunta commented on Review: The Munchables (Wii):

@0-Watt : There are seven 'real' worlds and one more "repeat-all-bosses" world after that. After summing together the times Wii message board play history messages tell me I spent playing the game I get just shy of six hours. On some stages, I spent extra time on finding all the acorns, and I did die a few times (especially on the first level of the last world when I tried to go after one particular acorn). The most frequent rank I got from different levels was S on the first try, so this scale definitely wasn't set too hard.

Overall, this didn't feel nearly as short as Klonoa did, probably because this was a more hectic game.

Kadunta commented on Review: Let's Tap (Wii):

This is a game in which the Wiimote jackets come in handy. I first tried the game with a Wiimote without the jacket, and as a result the Wiimote slowly kept sliding off the box. I guess I was also being a bit too heavy-handed with the taps.

One small annoyance is that you probably need some flat surface to in front of you... I don't know how well your lap would work as the surface on which to place the box, and at least I keep the distance between my TV and my sofa empty.

I expect this game to really start hurting hands at some point.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz had a disc golf minigame as well.

I'll have to see if a friend of mine plans to purchase this game... if he is, I might pick it up as well.

Kadunta commented on First Impressions: Water Warfare:

I liked Onslaught, but in general I prefer single-player games. I'll have to wait and see for better info on the multiplayer modes and the types of the SP missions. This doesn't support Wii Speak, does it? Even in Onslaught's co-op mode the lack of communication between players was annoying, and in team-based modes (such as CTF) I'd expect that omission to be even more significant.

Kadunta commented on Review: Icarian: Kindred Spirits (WiiWare):

Back when Super Mario Bros was a new game, it provided challenge and gameplay time to pay back the invested money. Sure, it might take you half an hour once you have played the game enough, but to get to that point (or even finish the game for the first time) you probably had played it for quite a few hours by then.

This wasn't the case with Icarian. Now, I'm not saying Icarian should've had limited lives and continues, but I'm not a fan of the tradeoff as it was done here.

As for the replayability of the game... I can't say anything about it yet. That's one way the game can overcome its shortness. I don't know how well time attack mode could've fit the mood of the game, but that would've been one small possible addition.

Kadunta commented on Review: Icarian: Kindred Spirits (WiiWare):

Took me just shy of three hours to finish the game, and especially in the last levels I died pretty frequently. The music fit well in the game, the game didn't overstay its welcome (or differently put, it didn't get boring and monotonous at any point) and the gameplay was fun. The next task is to collect all the relics then.

Overall, a solid game in my opinion.

Kadunta commented on Marvelous Sad Over Poor Sales:

One argument I've seen for having preowned games is that spending money for a new game when you turn in an older one isn't as much of a hurdle. I wouldn't know, since I sold my la(te)st console games with my Megadrive over a decade ago. Still, GameStop's preowned game pricing doesn't give much reason to go for used games instead of new ones if the game is a new one.

We'll see how PSP Go performs and how high their games are priced, since as far as I know that system has no used game market at all.

Kadunta commented on Marvelous Sad Over Poor Sales:

Hmh. I bought No More Heroes preowned (since I didn't expect to like it despite my friends' opinions and so far my opinion hasn't changed) so no money for Marvelous. I had been waiting for Little King's Story's price to come down a bit before buying it... well, so much for that. I expect that I'll like LKS much more than NMH.

Kadunta commented on Miyamoto Unconcerned By Rival Motion Control S...:

If the wand and Natal can tell also the coordinates of the "controllers", then I'd expect them to work better with games such as Samba de Amigo where the dead reckoning approach or reading the pose of the Wiimote isn't enough (I assume this is what Wiimotes and M+ are mostly limited to) for tracking the coordinates of the Wiimote in 3D space when it isn't pointing at the screen (the sensor bar). Of course, I might be wrong about the technical limitations of the Wiimote/wand/Natal.

But Sony and MS still need the killer apps to sell their controller systems.

Kadunta commented on Oh No, There's a Zombie Panic in Wonderland:

I wonder how this game relates to Cabal (Amiga). If this game compares favourably to that in terms of intensity (at least one screenshot seemed to have a decent number of baddies on screen, but in general they seemed pretty empty), it might be a good one. But if the difficulty level is too low, the game had better have plenty of replayability if it's short as well.

Kadunta commented on First Impressions: Let's Tap:

This is a game I'm interested in buying soon after the launch. But I'm most interested in what music is present (in the Rhythm Tap mode in particular). Sean, are you saying that the song selection hasn't changed from the Japanese version (which is, I think, the option I like best)?

Kadunta commented on Nintendo Confirms Metroid Prime Trilogy For Wii:

Hmh. I might want to skip this even if it makes it to Europe, since I already bought MP1+2 preowned and MP3 new. I don't think the control update (and the extras) will be enough for me to justify buying the games again (unless they're discounted, and probably not even then).

Still, if this piece of news had come before I got the first two games, I probably would've waited for the collection to get here.

Kadunta commented on Review: Onslaught (WiiWare):

@Objection_Blaster (314): I doubt this is the intended way of finishing him off, but I managed to kill it by staying at the start of the ramps so that the bug couldn't ram me but I was still roughly on the level of its head. I used mostly the whip to beat it and dodged the arm swings. When the whip ran out of energy (and maybe when the bug was preparing to throw the green sludge, I don't remember), I used the assault rifle (3-shot weapon) to attack the things at the top. Or once the head armor plating fell off, the revealed head itself (the shotgun might've worked as well). This method didn't work for me the first couple of tries, though, as the bug can still throw that green slime all around it from those tanks on its back, and you're very close to the source to get splashed. In a way, this is an "all or nothing" approach, based a lot on luck.

Kadunta commented on Review: Onslaught (WiiWare):

@259: I passed that level first time by shooting out all the nests one by one. Just make sure you get the bugs pouring out before they manage to get too far away from the nest. Of course, disturbing more than one nest at once isn't recommended.

... now, if I only managed to pass level 13...

(Weapon upgrade spoiler) One weapon upgrade that I don't see mentioned here yet is the first grenade upgrade; I got it when I cleared missions 1-3 on normal with rank S. Apparently, the difficulty level matters (cf. post 155). I had no other missions S-ranked. (End spoiler)
