IanUniacke commented on Wii Has Featured Fewer New IPs Than Rivals:

this is flat out false. Straight off the top of my head I can prove that nintendo released a new ip in 2007: Endless Ocean. sorry that Nintendo wasn't shoving it's new ips down gamespots throat so they could make their analysis.

IanUniacke commented on Feature: Nostalgia vs. Eternal Darkness:

The insanity effects were great and so memorable. One of the funny ones was the game would suddenly end and put up a screen saying something like "Thanks for playing! Stay tune for the sequel coming soon". :D

On the other hand I'd forgotten about many cool aspects of the game such as the extensive locales and time periods, also the magic system and the different enemies that you could play through multiple times. Such a fantastic game and a shame that some relics from ages past (eg no autosave) are holding it back a little now a days.

Zen Pinball is fantastic. I also had a lot of fun with Freaky Forms. It's really amazing to see these games outselling in weeks what other games took years to achieve. It would be great to see numbers but this sounds like the download service is really taking off.

One tip. If the blue shell is coming and you're near a jump...take the hit to your time and put on the breaks till the shell hits. If you try to make the jump you'll get knocked into the void and probably take a longer penalty.

IanUniacke commented on Rumour: Nintendo Readying Big Announcement Nex...:

I doubt they'd do a drastic redesign of the console that requires users to get an add on. That being said I doubt it's new versions of old software...that just doesn't seem to carry the weight that it sounds like. Could be a 3ds XL...that would definitely boost sales imo. Although I'm going to hazard a guess and say it's a completely new and mind blowing franchise. Either a new Miyamoto franchise or a new wacky franchise such as WiiSports was at the time.

IanUniacke commented on Talking Point: Should Nintendo Have Made the 3...:

This argument is missing an incredibly important point. A 3ds cartridge can ostensibly hold up to 32 gigabytes of information...that's almost as much as a blueray. Would it even be feasible to have something like this on a download service? I think it would be pretty limiting to the 3ds which is trying to be at the forefront of entertainment to be restricted to 1 gigabyte download. Don't get me wrong I have an iPod too...but it gives a certain type of entertainment. I'm glad that nintendo have both in their device.

IanUniacke commented on Research Firm Predicts 12m 3DS Sales by 2012, ...:

Does anyone else remember similar predictions happening at the start of the wii's life span? I recall predictions something along the lines of first year massive sales for wii and by the 4th year ps3: 120 million, 360: 80 million and wii: 50 million.

This sounds like the same kind of navel gazing prediction if you ask me. Lets not forget the original DS sold only 6 million in its first year.

IanUniacke commented on Review: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars ...:

I bought this game on a whim because it was either that or Rabbids or Rayman as a bundle. I must say it is one of the best games I've played in ages. Interesting to hear that it's by the guy who brought us Xcom because it really is that good and somewhat reminiscent of the old Xcom games. The 3d looks fantastic in this game...seeing down into ravines as well as seeing the explosions in 3d are two highlights. It adds a lot to the games graphics and takes a style (top down) that looks otherwise quite dated and makes it look modern.

But mostly the gameplay is just supremely polished. I'd recommend this to anyone.

One thing that the review didn't mention that I think works really great is that there are often 3rd factions that are "rising up" so to speak against the bad guys and it really helps to make you feel like you are part of a bigger struggle.

IanUniacke commented on Outbreak of Resident Evil Revelations Planned ...:

It's really good to see Capcom have some notion that RE5 sales were more a reflection of how good RE4 was than number 5. It sounds like they really want to get this right and rejuvenate the series before it stagnates (like a pre-emptive attack :D)

IanUniacke commented on Iwata's "Most Important" Wii Title of Last Chr...:

To the qq'ers maybe Just Dance isn't as innacurate as you can't dance??? I wouldn't say it's perfect by any stretch of the imagination but it does a pretty good job of detecting if you are doing the moves correctly.

What makes this game important is Ubisoft's approach. They didn't look at the wii and insult its audience...in fact quite the opposite. Compare Just Dance to EA's Boogie. EA decided that the wiimote was no good so they made a waggle fest mini game and called it a dance game. What Ubisoft did was to say "ok we all know the wiimote is not 100% accurate, but lets make the game we want to make and let the user's decide if the accuracy is an issue" Clearly it is not. Just Dance is the next Wii Sports no doubt about it. It has the same approach in almost all facets.

IanUniacke commented on Podcast: NLFM Episode 12: Ch-ch-changes:

By the way I think the new format is 100 times better (well 97.6x but I'm rounding up). I found the old longer format a bit draining but this is quite refreshing and I'm looking forward to more frequent updates and more variety.

Here's an idea right off the top of my head, what about every now and then you could suggest a theme and people who like to compose music could all try their hand at that theme? (eg make your best mario remix)

Nice idea setting up on soundcloud. I favourited you (mine is Awesometonia) so feel free to get any stuff from there you want, it's all original Rytmik compositions. That's just an open invitation I'll also put any songs I particularly like into your drop box for your consideration. I have a few Rytmik Rock Edition songs that I'll be uploading soon as well..would you be interested in those?

IanUniacke commented on Reggie Wonders Where Metroid: Other M Sales We...:

why do people need to decide what the other person is thinking? I know maybe I did that a little and I apologise if I did, but there's no need to dismiss other peoples opinions and hypothesise that they only have those opinions because they are stupid.

@Junior: I think you are misrepresenting other peoples opinions. I don't think people want Samus to be like Master Chief, but at least she has been portrayed in the past as the strong silent type. Take the end of Prime 3 for instance where she sits and reflects upon what has happened. The Samus of M:oM seems more like she would go to a frat party after defeating the final boss, but maybe that's just me. Even in the earlier Metroid games I felt she really came across as the reflective type..like oh there's a baby here I guess I better look after it, NOT "oh my life is so tragic and this baby will help me with my daddy issues".

Each to their own I guess but I do feel that some times people find it easier to misrepresent others opinions. Rather why not try to find out what they are thinking? For instance I could ask, what do people "like" about the gameplay of M:oM?

IanUniacke commented on Reggie Wonders Where Metroid: Other M Sales We...:

I agree with Pod SirGreatNose and others. This just really wasn't a very good game imo. And I've been a long time fan of Metroid. If you can't please your hardcore fan base then your game is not going to succeed. I would tend to agree with WaltzElf regarding "Really, there's also the third category "Hardcore Nintendo fans" that will buy anything Nintendo puts out and defend it with all kinds of righteousness when everyone else realises that it's just not that good."

Put 2 and 2 together and you will see that the game really wasn't that great...making claims like "casual" this or "bad review" that is not going to change this. Honestly do you really think a single 2/5 review (which imo was probably more spot on then most of the 9/10 reviews) is going to make people not buy a game when there are so many reviews biased in the other direction?

As for the issue of Samus talking too much, people can bury their heads in the sand and ignore the people complaining if you want, BUT you are completely missing the point. It's not that there was talking in the game at all...in fact Prime 3 had talking and it was pretty good. It's the fact that Team Ninja completely misunderstood the character and turned Samus into an extrovert. Part of the interesting gameplay of metroid has always been Samus' introverted nature. This displays everything from her character to the gameplay such as more exploratory and less action. Team Ninja failed on both counts in this regard. The complaints about the cutscene reflect both the disappointment players feel in their heroine having her character smeared, as well as their disappointment in the way the game plays out.

IanUniacke commented on Review: Rytmik: Rock Edition (DSiWare):

@cinemax: exactly. Why settle for either a guitar OR rytmik rock when you can have both. :D

I'm still in the experimenting stage with the rock edition. I've got one track that's coming up pretty good though. Also I'm thinking it can be great for either creating tracks or just composing them and then I can play them on my sg at home...perhaps even mix the drum tracks with a real guitar.

As for the old rytmik I'm almost finished on the music for a whole album I'm making, so thanks for the software Cinemax.

If anyone's interested they can check out some of my classic rytmik music here:

I also have some youtube video clips:

Hopefully some time soon I can record some tracks off the rock edition too.

IanUniacke commented on Rumour: House of the Dead: Overkill Sequel on ...:

This is the best m**rf**n news I've heard all year. I feel like a little foul mouthed kid in a porn-themed candy shop.

HotD:Overkill is the best game on the Wii period. To each their own but I feel sorry if some people don't understand the appeal. Madgear got it spot on with his analysis.

Waveboy did you "actually" play HotD:Overkill? It basically "is" Planet Terror as a light gun shooter. That they took their inspiration from Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino is blatantly obvious, everything from the foul mouthed Samuel L Jackson character to the Rodriguez style pistols of the collectors edition, to the busty biker chick, the formula X that infects the zombies. The only way it could be more like Planet Terror if it was called Planet Terror: Overkill and incorporated the plot from the movie.

IanUniacke commented on Broken Rules Feels Let Down by Nintendo's Onli...:

Also keep in mind that Nintendo said a few years ago that they feel the market for online has not reached a significant proportion of customers yet, AND they were right. A recent study showed that only approximately 4% of consumers download games and apps to their electronic devices.

IanUniacke commented on Broken Rules Feels Let Down by Nintendo's Onli...:

My comments will obviously be ridiculed and seen as controversial, but it is my considered opinion that nintendo is actually leagues in front of its competitors (with the exception of apple) in terms of its online strategy, when applied to regular consumers. Obviously when a system like Xbox 360 has 90% hardcore gamers as their customers, there will be more success online then a system like the wii with its 90% casual gamers, "REGARDLESS" of the online design. Having used both the 360 and the wii online, the wii is much less fuss to use. I had to go and register an account on my "pc" just to get my xbox online for crying out loud.

Systems like SpotPass and StreetPass show that Nintendo are fully aware of the big hurdles overcoming online becoming mainstream and are working to solve these problems. Other companies are finding success in the increasingly crowded hardcore market and therefore have no impetus to solve these problems. But where will these other companies be when the hardcore market for online is saturated? I will tell you where, they will be at 1st base.

The perfect example is Nintendo's backing of wifi with the ds. No cables. Uses a device that many people are already using for their laptops. To the average consumer, a cat5 cable is an arcane piece of technical wizardry that they really would just rather not bother with.

Apple went a step further and made their device use 3g, so the consumer doesn't even have to bother with configuration. The only main drawback of this is that it is (and perhaps will always be) expensive and perhaps prohibitive to the mainstream consumer.

As for wii offerings I have found Mario Kart Wii to be one of the best online games I have played. It is no fuss to get started you just say "play online please" and you're off racing against random people. I have probably spent more time playing that one game online then any other game outside of mmo's or rts's.

This looks to be really great, I can't wait. I love the improved bass sound in this version, and getting to play with the rythm and lead guitars will be lots of fun. The sample songs sound much better than I had imagined.

@ErrorSupply: With any luck they will have no aim assist for either classic controller or Wiimote and then the so called "hard core" will finally have to admit that wiimote is superior. Just like in the old Doom days, you could play with keyboard but you couldn't compete.
