@arronishere No, not sure. But I can't see a special edition on the web though, can you point me in it's direction? It looks to me it lost it the tag line early 2015, around the time of the playstation releases. There is some prerelease playstation marketing that still uses it. Now their website, steam & PSN are all just Starwhal. Only the kickstarter still has it.

Locking content and gear behind them in splatoon was a big mistake and has tarnished the game for me a bit.
You feel you're missing out on a fair chunk of content if you don't have all of them but the cost of all three is prohibitive. That's even if you could get them at the intended RRP.
The amiibo content could be offered separately, a amiibo card pack perhaps? But then the game has been criticised for the initial outlay in some places so perhaps that could make it worse.

Splatoon was a day-1 purchase for me but this could change that.

The cosmetic un-locks are fine but Amiibo specific weapons? No. Thanks.

An on-line shooter with weapons only accessible to a few (who have paid more) has steer-clear written all over it.

Nice to see extra functionally rather than just stability but I still want download games tied to my NNID rather than the hardware. I've got Wii U full of downloads that I could lose if it gets stolen or bricked. I know Nintendo might let me download them on another machine should the worse happen but they've made it clear they don't have to. What if I get tempted by a special edition and buy a second 3DS? It's an all or nothing transfer.

I love the idea of going all digital but for my Wii U Nintendo have made a number of choices that stop me. First is the cost, not just on release but over the lifetime of the game. Nintendoland on disc from Game is £20 in the e-shop it is £50, that is utter insanity. Second is the worry that games are tied to my hardware. Lose my 3ds or buy a new one (the screen does scratch easily) and any downloads aren't there. My Wii U breaks? Nintendo MIGHT restore the games, but I'm not 100% on that, they legally could refuse. Third is storage. I know, I know, I can just get a hard-drive for the Wii U, and I probably will, but it is another barrier. The storeage supplied on the Wii U is sometimes only enough for one game (Lego City Undercover?), pretty poor.
So as it is I love the convenience of digital, less clutter, no hunting for the disc but while other platforms tackle at least some of these issues I'm much more likely impulse buy from them.

Despite owning a SNES I never played this first time round. I picked it up on the Wii VC and what struck me was the production values, the scale and look of the game is stunning. A true classic & the Wii U version gives me a good excuse to revisit it.

"Is Nintendo preparing a cloud-based system which allows you to sign-in and download content to another 3DS without having to do the awkward transfer?"
I do hope so. This is a step in the right direction but knowing my games are tied to hardware not an account make me think twice about choosing the download option.
