Indeed. And to think we've then got the 3DS coming next year...

I haven't seen that vid yet, but I'm curious as to whether the soundtrack of Epic Mickey can really possibly stand up to the likes of Super Mario Galaxy.

I always questioned the rocket attachment for FLUDD in Super Mario Sunshine. I think we now know where it's from.

Now, as much as I love Mario the way he is now, I think it would be really cool if Nintendo at least tried a full-on, big-budget Mario shooter. They might have what it takes to change my mind about the genre.

Hmm...just thought of something. Nintendo is probably going to recycle the whole shooter idea in some form or another, even if they cut the guns (I honestly cannot ever see Nintendo going that route). While it's a little hard to come up with something for Mario, I think a first-person Yoshi game where you throw eggs in a 3D space might be possible.

Huh. Netflix is good and all, but I don't like the idea of having to pop a disc into my Wii every time I want to watch a movie. Then again...going to the video store and renting a physical DVD isn't that different, save for the car trip. :P

I demand the SMG2 soundtrack as my platinum reward!
I did make my own rip of it (I have ways...) but there's nothing quite like having an official collectible CD of it with the cover and everything!

BTW, last year, I went for the Mario hat. It sits beside the nine yoshi plushies, two Mario Bros. figures, and countless Pokemon statuettes I brought back from my field trip to Japan. Makes for a pretty awesome bedroom when you add in the three CN Mario posters.

Game Woman? [insert sandwich-making joke here]
Someone was bound to say something like that.

From what I've heard, Nintendo can slap any price they want on the 3DS and its games, and it's still gonna be a Wii situation where they're out of stock for two years.

Feld0 commented on DSiWare Will Not Be Transferable Unless Ninten...:

DSiWare, WiiWare, and VC games get registered to your Club Nintendo account, and it's possible for Nintendo to check what games have been downloaded on your specific system in case they're not showing up in your account or something.

All it takes is for them to take Club Nintendo a step further and turn it into this "account-based system" they're touting. Here's a laughably simple way to do it:

Any system you register and link to your Club Nintendo account (DSi, DSi XL, 3DS, Wii) will automatically be eligible to download any game registered to the account for free.

There. It's as easy as that.

It makes a lot of sense for Nintendo to release the 3DS by Christmas. I mean, that's when people are most willing to spend big bucks on bleeding-edge tech, right? If they waited till February to release it, most people will probably already have bought an Xbox 360 Slim to put under the Christmas tree, and won't be ready to lay down a few hundred more quite yet.

Further "first" posts will result in serious action - Moderating team.

Come on, Nintendo! Just kill the iPhone 4 already! XD

If they add a second camera to the inside, we've got a FaceTime competitor on our hands. If video-chatting through your phone can "revolutionize" the way you talk to friends and family, imagine video-chatting in 3D!

I always thought it was kinda funny that there's only one inner camera on the 3DS.

When they say that Apple's their competitor, they really mean it. So far, I've got a feeling that everything the 3DS has is meant to counter the iPhone 4, including this.

Judging by some of the screenshots I've seen, Mario Kart 3DS is a brand-new game.

The original DS was based on the N64, but offered somewhat nicer graphics; the 3DS looks like it's based on the Wii, but offers stereoscopic 3D graphics.

Wait...is this the "new Mario game" Martinet was talking about in that tweet? I sure hope not, 'cause I'm still holding out for a Yoshi's Island 3DS...

Hmm...they announced quite a few Mario games there, actually. Paper Mario, Mario Kart, Mario Sports Mix...they could add one more to the list. Perhaps it will be announced at a smaller, more exclusive event together with Pikmin 3?

There's no word on a VC release from Nintendo, but if you consider my theory that we've got a sequel to the Yoshi's Island series on its way (they talked about it in the last podcast), it would make a lot of sense for them to release the VC version of this game together with its next installment.

@Hyper Knuckles: Give me five good reasons for that, or I won't believe you.

If anyone's interested in knowing more about my speculation for this new Yoshi game, and all the clues I've found to its existence, I'm writing a huge, in-depth article about it on my personal site. Would it be OK for me to post a link (or e-mail it in to you guys, and hope it gets featured) when I finish it?

Jeez, none of the above 133 comments support this "theory." Owait...one did.
Here's the 133rd one!

The iPad is a giant iPod Touch (or perhaps iPhone, if you get the 3G version). Yes, it CAN game, but the 6-year-old DS to this day, manages to provide a superior gaming experience to the whole iHandheld family.

Also, doesn't anyone else remember the days before the iPhone 3G, when there was no App Store? And no 3G? The very features that make the iHandhelds so desirable today? That's proof right there that they were never meant for gaming.

The current DS is doing better than the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad combined. I can only imagine what's gonna happen when the 3DS rolls around.

smashbrawler331 wrote:

"i wanna see the third myster mario game 'that is not new super mario bros wii or super mario galaxy 2' that reggie talked about. everyone else seems to have forgotton about it..."

Putting all the pieces of the puzzle together, it makes sense for this to be the next Yoshi platformer.

Every 3D Mario game has had a corresponding 2D one so far:
Super Mario Bros. = Super Mario 64 (a revolution; kicked off the series)
Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels = Super Mario 64 DS (same game, but more levels)
Super Mario Bros. 2 (the "American" one) = Super Mario Sunshine (the "odd one out")
Super Mario Bros. 3 = Super Mario Galaxy (a return to form; harkens back to the original, but introduces a crapload of new stuff that boggles the mind)
Super Mario World = Super Mario Galaxy 2 (in a way, more of its predecessor; retains same basic mechanics, but has a different set of power-ups and [re-]introduces Yoshi)
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island = this mysterious third Mario game

It all makes sense, doesn't it? They can even give it a gimmicky name like Super Mario Galaxy 3DS: Yoshi's Planet, Yoshi's Island 3DS, or something like that.

This may be the more exploratory 3D Mario game everyone wants. They could replace the "galaxies" with "planets"; less-linear, more open worlds that beg to be explored so one can find all the little collectibles, like the original Yoshi's Island.

Besides, on the SMG2 start screen, you see Yoshi flying around on his own, separately from Mario and the luma. If they wanted to go for a cinematic effect, they would separate the luma from Mario, too, but there has to be a reason Yoshi is flying off on his own, especially when you take into account that you never, EVER see him doing his own thing anywhere in the game or the artwork. I like to think of it as a sign of things to come...

Gawd; I sound crazy, don't I?

Please, oh please let there be a Yoshi's Island 3[DS] on this! The thought of seeing a YI game's stunning graphics in 3D makes me drool!

Maybe they'll use such a game as a demonstration of the system's abilities, like the original YI did back on the SNES...

Ah, don't mind me and my wishes for another full-on Yoshi platformer. I just hope Nintendo's gonna do a good job with the 3DS, and have the great games to support it.

We're probably gonna get myCalendar or something next. If it's a calendar program, I'd love to see it integrated with the DSi's system software so that it would "ring" or something when you've got a reminder coming up, and would show upcoming events on the top screen or something.

Now, if only they released demos of retail games...

For example, an SSBB demo that features a single stage and four characters in the standard versus mode. Not that it's really necessary, as the game is the very definition of popular, but you get the gist of it.

WTF? Is Shiggy wearing lipstick or something?

@Kid_A
Yeah, I know he said (a while ago) something along the lines of "The next cnosole will be HD, but not all games will support it," using Wii Fit as an example of what would be in SD, and SMG or something as an example of a game that would be HD. But, I wonder: why the heck NOT make Wii Fit run in HD, even if it is only for smoother edges and sharper text, rather than any significant visual polish?
Even better: find some way to make (at least some) existing Wii games run in 720p. Technically, the Wii is twice as powerful as a GameCube, which already supported 16x9 480p. 480p->720p is approximately a doubling of pixels, so I think it would work out nicely.

Feld0 commented on Hardware Impressions: Nintendo DSi LL:

I think the D-Pad and the ABXY buttons are way too far up. I'm also surprised that the screens' pixels are barely noticeable. I can actually count the pixels pretty well on my (regular) DSi. Not that it's really a problem, though, when playing, unless the text is a puny font size. glares at DSi Browser
But I'm happy with what I've got. Besides, the $200 would be better spent on the likes of NSMBWii, Zelda: ST, and M&L: BIS.

Feld0 commented on Review: Pokemon Platinum (DS):

I've put 150+ hours of blood, sweat, and tears into this gem, and I'm still discovering new stuff! Amazing value for only $ 34.99!

Incredible value aside, I think it's about time that the handheld (a.k.a. main series) Pokemon games migrated to full 3D battles. True, 3D models, textures, and animations for every Pokemon will take up a lot more memory on the cart than simple one- or two-frame sprites, but seeing as the carts themselves currently go up to 512 MB, and Diamond, Pearl and Platinum were only 64 MB, I think they can handle it no problem. And I don't want to hear excuses about the lack of DS horsepower. Titles like Metroid Prime Hunters, Super Mario 64 DS, Kingdom Hearts, and Mario Kart DS prove otherwise. Besides, it's already been proven that the DS has better graphics than the N64, which had 3D battles in the form of the Pokemon Stadium games! And I wouldn't say those looked half-bad! While we're on 3D, the only actual 3D in the game is the overworld and some VERY select building interiors. The sprite characters and items could live through, I guess (I'd prefer 3D models, though), but I think it's about time the environments shifted to constant 3D now!

Another gripe I have with Pokemon is the horrendous sound quality. To get what I mean, just start up the game and plug in some headphones or a decent set of speakers. Ewwwww... Sad, really, because the actual music is composed rather well, too. And the Pokemon sounds themselves could use a lot of work.

Full 3D both in and outside of battles may be a bit of a strain even on a 512 MB cart, but Game Freak is a talented team, and I'm pretty sure they could pull it off, especially if they were to take advantage of the DSi's doubled power and quadrupled RAM.

So there are my hopes for Pokemon Gen. V: retaining all the charm, gameplay, nostalgia, and lasting appeal of the preceding handheld games, but with the polish and audiovisual spectacles of the console titles! And an extra 150-200-ish Pokemon in the Dex won't hurt, either.
