DrDingus commented on Exclusive: MercurySteam Has Been Working On A ...:

If Nintendo trusted Mercury Steam to make a new Metroid, then I would trust Mercury Steam to do the job. The fact that they turned it down isn't necessarily a sign of a bad game, just that it's not what they have in mind for Metroid... though Federation Force really makes me wonder about the future of the franchise. I don't lament said future. It could be very interesting.

Anyways, I hope we get to see what they pitched as an original franchise one day. Even if it's just Metroid-esque, sign me up.

DrDingus commented on Feature: The Unexpected Legacy of Wii Music:

I loved the music sequencer in Mario Paint. I spent a lot of time playing with that.

Years later there was little music tool released on DSiWare called Rytmik. I got really hooked on that and sunk many many hours into it. It's a great little program and it comes highly recommended. I have also enjoyed experimenting with the various Korg synthesizers that have been released on the DS and 3DS over the years.

It was only recently that I decided to buy a proper MIDI controller and digital audio workstation for my computer. All I've been doing lately is making music with them and I plan on creating a soundcloud once I feel a bit more confident in my work. I would never have picked up this hobby or recognized my potential talent were it not for the music software that has graced Nintendo handhelds over the last several years.

So yes, Nintendo has played a very important role in my interest in music creation.

DrDingus commented on Talking Point: Wii U Gamers Have Been Treated ...:

I think the final question about third party support for Wii U comes down to this: Did Wii U sales slump because third parties were not on board or were third parties not on board because Wii U sales slumped? I think an argument could be made for either scenario, and I'm curious where people come down on that question.

On one hand the system its self was somewhat confusing for consumers in the early days and it was middling in terms of power and scant in terms of content in general. But on the other hand people who were on the fence may have decided against purchase due to the lack of third party content and lost interest completely when that trend continued. I seriously wonder how much of a difference more early third party support would have made for the system.

@Quorthon

You go to the Nintendolife comment section and proceed to insult Nintendo fans and condescend to everyone who tries to have a conversation with you. You undermine your own argument with mud slinging and name calling. People aren't disagreeing with you because they're "butthurt fanboys", they are responding to a bully. You know, you can make an argument without being a complete jerk.

DrDingus commented on Rumour: Nintendo Isn't Bringing Devil's Third ...:

Sad. I was looking forward to this one... Surprised to see so much bashing in the comments. I think this game looks great. Regardless, this was supposed to be a big release and now out of nowhere it's conspicuously absent due to vague "quality concerns." Why is it still being released in Europe and Japan despite these concerns? Why withhold it from only one of the three major regions but not the others? Why not cancel it altogether if it's not up to their standards? This rumor smells fishy.

@Einherjar
I suggest waiting for more development time and more diverse screenshots before declaring the art style "flat out horrible." It does seem to be a step backward though. I think the series as a whole would benefit from a new look altogether, like cell shading or some kind of theme like Yoshi's Wooly World's yarn or Okami's traditional Japanese painting look. From this screenshot I gather they're, unfortunately, going for a generic JRPG look once again.

As for gameplay, I hope they don't discard some of the improvements they have made to control over the years in the name of doing a throwback. The context sensitive controls in Lost Valley were great and the terraforming was an excellent idea. Unfortunately the execution was sloppy and unrefined. I think it's a shame that they're abandoning it instead of improving upon it.

I think the ideal Harvest Moon would have the personality and atmosphere of A Wonderful Life, the customization and breadth of content of A New Beginning, and the modern controls and mechanics of Lost Valley(albeit with better execution). It'll never happen but man can dream.

DrDingus commented on Talking Point: Nintendo's Approach to Transfor...:

@shani
Firstly I'd like to say that I actually agree with you on most of this, especially with regard to how children might see these games. I don't, however, appreciate having a whole lot of words put my mouth. I don't personally hate any of it and I'm certainly not disgusted. In fact I'm rather looking forward to Metroid FF in particular... Zelda TFH I could take or leave, but AC: Amiibo Festival is just disappointing. I do stand by the word "pollute" with all of them though. The fact is this: before these games were announced, these franchises stuck to a pretty strict pedigree. Each new entry was a logical step forward. This was true even in the transition from 2D to 3D or side scrolling to first person, etc. Despite these transitions, the core of the series tropes remained: zelda's puzzles and dungeons, metroid's scifi isolation vibe(until recently), animal crossings casual time wasting, etc. These games were hugely successful in critical terms and in sales. The new entries announced at E3 arguably deviate significantly from this pedigree. I don't think it's all bad, but it muddies the waters of what it means to be a game in their respective franchises. Multiplayer within a Metroid game is one thing, but a multiplayer-focused Metroid is, historically, just not what makes the series great. It's not BAD but it's distinctly Un-Metroid and it's certainly not what fans were hoping for. Kids will like it, sure, but that isn't the point. As for Animal Crossing, they've split it into THREE different pieces: main series, home design, and inexplicable board game. Dont you think that muddies(see:pollutes) the waters for that franchise just a bit? How many spin offs will we have to sift through before we get back to the core of these franchises? Experimentation is good, but it becomes a problem when it replaces their staples for the forseeable future.

@shani
This aricle-length comment is tone deaf and condescending. It's fine that you're cool with this batch of games, but that doesn't make anybody stupid for being unsatisfied with it. Nobody is asking for "more of the same stuff." We are not "unable to adapt to new things" because of our "limited intelligence." Those things may noy be your point but you still just let them hang there condescendingly. It's one thing to like the innovative and sometimes divisive things nintendo has done in the past, but make no mistake, there is nothing innovative about polluting beloved franchises with irrelevant spin offs and neglecting the desires and expectations of their most loyal fans. You're entitled to your opinion, but that's no excuse to shrug off those who disagree with you as unintelligent.

What's weird is that we are being given so many spin offs all at the same time. The timing of it is so incredibly awkward. It's a sudden rush of strange new content and strange new content ONLY. For the forseeable future all we get is a lot of strange(not necessarily bad) stuff and zero of what fans have been actively clamoring for for yyeeaarrss.

DrDingus commented on Metroid Prime: Federation Force Is The Metroid...:

I have to say that this is a huge letdown. People have been asking for a return to form with Metroid for a long time and Nintendo refuses to deliver it. They just keep taking the franchise in these inexplicable directions. They just will not listen to their fans. They refuse to give people what they want. The fact that they are calling this game Metroid is absurd.

There's gonna be a female character? There are going to be MULTIPLE female characters? RABBLE RABBLE FEMINAZI RABBLE TYPICAL FEMINIST GARBAGE RABBLE RABBLE! PORTRAYING WOMEN AND MEN AS EQUALS IS JUST TOO POLITICAL FOR VIDEO GAMES! RABBLE!

The fact that this is controversial is insane. Seriously.

DrDingus commented on Mighty No. 9 Studio Comcept Facing Fan Backlas...:

So what, we can't have people with political beliefs designing games? Or are we to have all of the designers publicly state all of their political beliefs so that we can pick and choose which ones get to work on the games we want to play? Or worse, must we suffer through a game that portrays women as equal to men? Oh man that would be terrible. The very thought of it.

Lets move on. There's nothing to see here.

This is disappointing, but the fact that I was already satisfied enough with how the game looked to buy it well before 2+ was even released, I suppose I shouldn't be all that upset. Unfortunately I don't even use Steam because my computer isn't much good for gaming. Oh well. I guess I'll just play 2+ and call it a day.

Let's not forget the custom stage builder. That is EASILY my favorite part of brawl. I'm really hoping they beef it up big time in the next one. It really needs more variation visually and in terms of obstacles. Really just more freedom in general would be great.

@LetsGoRetro
Lol chill, man. It's a perfectly reasonable price, but like I already said, I'm not in love with the game. And no, I don't really have a set price I put on certain games. I've played Super Mario World like fifty bajillion times but I was willing to drop 8 bucks on it because it's one of my favorite games of all time. And besides, I know 2.50 isn't much, but I'm paying my own bills and rent out of pocket at the moment, so I can't go buying every game that's on sale simply because it's on sale.

I've played this one on GBA and on Super Mario All-Stars for SNES and just never fell in love with it. Maybe if I play the original 8-Bit version that could change... especially if it's half off 'cause I bought SMW... Hmm. I don't dislike it, but I don't know of I'm willing to pay 2.50 for a game i've played several times already.

I honestly forgot that this was on the way. I bought, played, and loved Toki Tori 2 right after it released. I was really surprised by just how much I enjoyed the game. I'm really glad to see that it'll have some new life and a reason to start playing it again. Can't wait!

DrDingus commented on Review: SpeedX 3D Hyper Edition (3DS eShop):

I really enjoyed the original, but I just don't think I can justify buying Hyper Edition. The fact that there is less content is really disappointing. I had no idea this game was coming until recently but I considered it an instant buy until I read this review. The improvements sound cool but they just don't justify a repurchase.

I've been playing Harvest Moon since Friends of Mineral Town on the GBA, and A New Beginning is definitely one of the better entries in the franchise. It's extremely deep and dangerously addicting. I'm surprised Europe hasn't gotten it yet, but better late than never.

I once sold a copy of "Panzer Dragoon Saga" for Sega Saturn on eBay for about $200. I wish I had held onto it because I'm sure it would only appreciate in value. A manual, though? You'd have to be a pretty hardcore collector to go for something like that.

4chan is not a remotely reliable source. Why is this even a story? If I felt like it I could go on 4chan right now and say the exact opposite of this. Would that make it a story worth reporting? "Rumor: Some guy on 4chan claims that Wii U is TOTALLY getting GTA 5!"

DrDingus commented on CNN Money: Nintendo Is "Tone Deaf" To Industry...:

Nintendo does not ignore trends. They examine them, consider them, and kindly toss most of them aside. That is what they have always done and they have been quite successful with their own unique ideas for a long time. Being the odd one out is what Nintendo does best. I find all this chatter about how they've lost touch and are DOOOMED to be irrelevant. Wii U will inevitably catch on. It's not the wildfire the Wii was but it has many years ahead of it. Everybody relax, shut up, and let Nintendo do their imperfect, ridiculous, weird, hilarious, entertaining, brilliant thing.

Also, the last two times I went to Gamestop to pick up a Wii U game they didn't have it in stock. Sonic Transformed and Darksiders II are two of the biggest release titles for the system and they couldn't be bothered to order more copies when they ran out. Pathetic.

DrDingus commented on Wii U GamePad Can Play Assassin's Creed 3 in 3D:

As a rule I would say that 3D doesn't have much of a practical use, but as a feature the 3D effect truly adds an indescribable clarity to many gaming experiences. So I would say the best use for the 3D effect would be for fully 3D rendered games more so than 2D sidescrollers. That said, lets see a 3D Mario for WiiU amirite?

DrDingus commented on Bridgestone Responds to Sony's "Kevin Butler" ...:

If Sony hadn't filed a lawsuit, I wouldn't have even known about that Bridgestone ad, as I'm sure is the case with most people. They are just calling more attention to it. Saying "HEY LOOK, IT'S KEVIN BUTLER PROMOTING A WII! LETS SUE HIM!" is a lot more damaging than their actor appearing near a Wii. Also, the second Lambert knew there would be a Wii involved, he should have just walked away. If you're the guy who's known almost exclusively for your role as "that Playstation guy," shouldn't it click that it's a bad idea to be in anything promoting direct competition? This whole situation is just a series of poor decisions from everybody involved.

DrDingus commented on Feature: Diamonds in the Rough - Dementium: Th...:

Imagine it. Dementium 3D: The only first person shooter on the 3DS is ridiculously creepy and deliciously atmospheric. How could Renegade Kid pass up such an awesome chance? Sure they could make a cool HD version on the Wii U, but part of what gives Dementium its charm is the fact that it's on a humble handheld, and yet still delivers a memorably spooky experience. It's one thing to join the ranks of Dead Space and ZombiU as great HD horror games, but wouldn't it be more interesting to be the ONLY horror game on the 3DS?
