It's scary how real life sneaks up on you. When growing up I had loads of free time but relatively little money, so games got replayed endlessly or traded in for new ones; I couldn't even hazard a guess as to how many times I've played through the pre-Twilight Princess Zelda titles. Whilst I haven't sold a game in years and can still afford to buy almost everything I want new, I have barely any time to actually play them. I bought myself a PS3 at the start of last summer, and since then I've completed one full retail title on the console. I sometimes wonder if it'd be worth just giving up on everything for a bit and just spend days catching up on my backlog...

I don't know what people are doing to their Gamecube controllers, the only one I've had break on me was my original and that was because I wore the cable out by wrapping it around the controller too often (blame Smash Bros). It's definitely my favourite gaming controller ever. It isn't perfect (I don't play many FPS's but I can see why the L/R buttons aren't great for them, the C stick is a little small for my liking and personally I'd prefer the Z button to be like the Dualshock R1. And clicky analogue sticks are cool as well :P) but playing with iIt just feels... right. I haven't encountered anything as good before or since, and whilst it's great that it got another 5 years of life through the Wii it'd be a shame if the controller got abandoned now.

That's pretty cool, and makes X and Y look even more embarrassing. Go into battle with two flying types (Moltres is the worst, it has to render both flying and fire animations) and the framerate struggles even in standard 2D, 3D is a complete mess. That a turn based game failed where a fighting game succeeds so fantastically is... well, as I said, embarrassing.

@haniwa Up until B/W the TCG was actually really good at avoiding power creep, and then they just sort of went 'f*** it' and blew everything to stupid levels. If a Pokémon's got less than 170hp now it's susceptible to a turn one ko, it's pretty ridiculous tbh. Which is why I was interested in that Pyroar above, blocking all those fast overpowered basics that dominate at the moment.

@Dark-Link73 ...uhh, what are you talking about? The bit you quoted states that everything you've downloaded will still be playable after the deadline. Meaning it's downloaded, on your machine, and nothing's going to happen to stop you from playing it. It's just the servers providing new downloads that'll be stopped; you wont be able to buy any new songs to accompany those ones you've already got.

As for me, there's a part of me that wants to go and pick some stuff up, there's some good songs on there the last time I checked, but the infrequency that I play GH combined with the fact that this would require me to put funds onto my Wii means I'll probably pass. If I had VC points spare I'd probably use them up on this, but it's not something I'd go out of my way to take advantage of.

@Pit-Stain Honestly, the sheer number of comments like this in the past for different sections that they then precede to blitz through means I have little doubt that any game that is put forward will be conquered. Cinaclov commented on Soapbox: Nintendo Soundtracks - Where Are They?:

Gamefreak are actually doing really well on releasing the soundtracks to the Pokémon franchise. And whilst I agree with the article overall, I often find official soundtracks can be a little hit and miss -the original OST for Tales of Symphonia sticks out as a particularly bad one. It's over four discs, which is exciting because it's got everything included (not just a small selection as some do), but it's all just taken from the game, looped once, then fades out. No particular order to it either, which means there's almost no flow to it at all. Thankfully Namco have gotten better at it since then, and not every company has quite that 'stick it on a disc and sell it' approach (Final Fantasy OST's tend to be amazing) but if Nintendos efforts would be in any way similar to that I think I'd be okay just sticking to fan remakes. Which is more or less what I do now, and some of them are incredible. Theophany's Time's End is one of my favourite albums of last year, and GlitchxCity's Pokémon tracks are fantastic.

"With NFC the potential for a Nintendo 'World', in which characters from various IPs do as they please in user-generated levels, is hugely exciting. With the principles of Infinity and Minecraft wrapped in Nintendo packaging it could be a huge selling point."

Yes! A sort of Smash Bros/Disney Infinity-like set up where you could buy 'trophies' similar to those from Smash Bros, scan them into a game and just... play. That's... I'm excited just thinking about it. And imagine if every piece of Nintendo branded merchandise in the future had an NFC bonus embedded in it or the packaging? You buy a soundtrack, the case unlocks that soundtrack in a game. Zelda Mangas unlocking artwork and weapons, or plushies unlocking characters.

I'd be bankrupt within weeks.

Cinaclov commented on Super Mario Bros. Stop Motion Pixel Art Kickst...:

@Nictendo64 And the time he invests in making it is worthless? I don't know the creator in any capacity so I could be wrong but it's entirely possible he's a freelance animator. If that is the case then the Kickstarter would basically be so he could focus on this without having to worry about living costs, other jobs, etc. It turns the project from a side show that gets worked on whenever he's free into a full time thing, meaning it'll be be finished quicker and have a much higher level of focus paid to it throughout its creation (hopefully resulting in a better final video).

That's all assumption, but as an animator that's what makes most sense to me.

Gens 1 and 2 of Pokémon won't ever get VC releases. At the most basic level that's because the internal mechanics shifted dramatically when R/S released, meaning the originals are completely incompatible with the newer titles. Add to that that both gens have received remakes and the earliest titles we are likely to get on VC are the GBA games. Even then I have serious doubts as to that happening, I think gamefreak would rather focus on promoting the newest releases or a remake or something.

Cinaclov commented on Soapbox: A Monster Hunter Obsession, and Why t...:

If I were still in school, with all the free time that that enables you with, I think I'd be all over the Monster Hunter franchise (just as my brother currently is). As it is I just don't have the time to invest, especially when I consider how many other games I've got to play through.

I bought a PS3 early last summer and still haven't gotten around to completing anything of substantial length (although I'm nearly there with Ni No Kuni :P). PlayStation Plus keeps passing new games to me (not that I'm complaining, I wouldn't get to try many of them otherwise) and the Final Fantasy games are also on sale on PSN at the moment, yet I haven't got enough time for any of it. So trying to get involved in a franchise that seems to require so much investment isn't something that I can see happening.

Unless I win the lottery or something. Which is unlikely; I don't enter. So if I did win it'd be a sort of Luigi's Mansion type situation, and probably wouldn't lead to much gaming time even then :P

Cinaclov commented on Video: Smash Bros. Characters Recast in an Att...:

@Benjelo I agree. Whilst I know full well how much time and effort goes into creating something like this (so it's difficult for me to be too critical) I think it's a big missed opportunity not to have villains like Bowser or King D' in place of the Titans in this (with Ganondorf as the armored giant? :D ). Especially as they're all posing in the video thumbnail that it starts with.

But otherwise my only real complaint is with how the different elements work with the pacing; It's a great idea having Pit fly in on the "wings of freedom" part of the song, but it would've worked so much better (and have been less work to animate) if it'd been a lingering shot of him soaring along, especially after the quick cuts leading to it. Instead the character did some complicated movements whilst flitting off and around the edge of the screen. In some cases simplicity works best. There's a few other small moments like that throughout imo.

But, as I said at the start, it's really easy to criticise something like this without considering that someone spent 6 months creating it, and overall I'd say it's certainly paid off. The animation quality is really fantastic and as a celebration of Smash' I've seen far, far worse.

I've thought in the recent past that it'd be useful for local multiplayer to be able to hook the 3DS up to a screen, especially for something like holding tournaments with Pokémon X and Y whilst there's no Stadium equivalent available. It's far easier for spectators to watch a big screen than huddle around two devices.

That said, it's otherwise something that wouldn't interest me and, as the article states, is probably a feature I wouldn't use as I'd end up looking at the two screens directly in front instead of splitting attention.

I probably wouldn't pay for it, mostly for the reasons stated (but also because I'm not that fussed about platformers of any kind and I already have Shantae to scratch that itch if need be) but considering it's free just for registering to the Nintendo Network I'm hardly going to complain. The amount of free games Nintendo (well, NOE at least) has been giving away the last few months is quite cool.

Cinaclov commented on Video: This Bravely Default Story Trailer Goes...:

@AyeHaley I disagree with you about the music, the soundtrack is one of the main reasons I was so excited about the game, but that's opinion so I can't argue that. The story however, whilst you're right that the main outline is as cliche as these things come, doesn't feel like a re-do as you play through it. One of the things I wasn't expecting but which works well is that the 'anti-crystal' group you're up against isn't set-up like in other RPGs where there's just one small group with lots of underlings. There's a hierarchy, regional power structures, clashes of ideology within that and different factions. Within that standard 'purifying crystals' outline is alot of interesting stuff.

Basically, what I'm saying is I don't discount the whole game because what you've heard of the overarching story is cliche. Because there's more to the game than just plot, and even if it turns out that it isn't your thing the battles and environments might still make the game worth it.

I find the constant wanting for Retro to make another Metroid a bit tiresome in all honesty; I'd love to see what they could do with another big franchise. I can't see F-Zero being their thing (feel free to surprise me :D), but Star Fox could be fantastic. Don't get me wrong, I think Metroid is a fantastic series, but it still makes up half of Retros gaming portfolio with Nintendo, give them some breathing room before going back to it imo.

"UK Retailer GAME States Ambition to be at the Forefront Of Download Content Sales"

Well, when their only competition is often download shops themselves, it's not really that ambitious to be 'at the forefront', is it? When I downloaded Animal Crossing on 3DS I had a choice of either paying the £40 Nintendo were charging through the eshop, or the £35 (iir correctly) that Game were charging- that's it. It's good to have options, don't get me wrong, but equally don't be too pleased that you're the bigger fish in a closed off pond.

I only download games that I know I'll always want to keep (although that's not so much of an issue now compared to when I was younger with no source of income) and have available to me all the time. As such Animal Crossing is the only full retail title I've downloaded, but that was bought using GAMEs download card system. The £40 Nintendo charges is pretty ridiculous, but the £34 or whatever it was I was able to pay is more manageable. I'd like to see more download cards rolled out over here.

Cinaclov commented on Former Sony Developer Feels The Wii U "Won't S...:

I agree with a lot of what was said, the same day launch was probably a mistake (I don't watch TV so have no idea about advertising for any console). But the Wii-U not making it to next Christmas? Very unlikely. I mean, stranger things have happened in the world of videogames, but between now and then we've got Mario Kart and Smash Bros (which I sort of see as the system sellers at the moment) along with whatever else is thrown our way. Add to that Zelda in the long term, and it'll survive. Probably with GameCube like sales rather than Wii, but it'll survive.

Me personally, I don't buy a console unless there are at least three exclusive games I really want to play, and a good six or seven others that I'm interested in. It's for that reason that I've only relatively recently bought a PS3, and is also why I'm not going to buy a Wii-U (or any other next gen console) just yet. For similar reasons it'll be interesting to see how sales of the next-gen consoles fare in the next few months; besides Watch Dogs (also on current gen consoles) and Witcher 3 in the long term, there isn't anything imminent on either console that makes me want a next-gen console.

Cinaclov commented on GAME Offers Musical Chest With Collector's Edi...:

Working it out, GAME are selling ALBW for £34.99, and LA:DX is £5.39 as a download from the GAME website. So it'd be £40.38 to buy those two separately from them, meaning you're paying £9.61 extra for the chest and A0 poster (assuming you don't already have DX).

Really, for me it'd be dependent on the build quality of the chest, and on that front I have a nasty feeling it'll be the build quality of a Happy Meal toy. Whilst my first instinct was to go for it, after thinking about things logically I'll probably pass.

And on a side note, I'm increasingly thinking GAME ripped me off when I bought Pokémon X from them (which I only pre-ordered with them to get Keldeo on White :P). To order a physical copy online through their site is £32, it cost me £35 in the shop with a £5 deposit (so £40 total) and they didn't even have any of the Pokéball preorder items left (not that I'm that fussed about it, it's just the principle of the thing :P). So I'm not sure as I'd want to trust them with this either...

I don't want a remake of R/S. I think the games still hold up well graphically (with a higher frame rate than the DS and 3DS games :P), they're still very much playable and you can transfer Pokémon from them to the current games (plus it would make a mess of the quite nice timeline they've built themselves through the games :P)

If they really feel pressured to revisit Hoenn then that's what the game(s) should be, revisiting the region, not a remake of the same story. Make it similar to Black2 and White 2, or how Kanto was in G/S, the same region but several years further down the line with all new story, upgrades, areas etc.

Even if you don't buy both X and Y it's inevitable at some point that there will be more Pokémon games within this generation. There will be some Pokemon that require trading to evolve, or some multiplayer mechanic that's required to get some reward (see hidden bases, underground or pass powers). There's been quite a few occasions where I've had to borrow my mum/sisters DS to do something between my DS Pokémon games. If all your games are downloaded and restricted to your system however you can't do any of that between your own games, you have to find someone else to work with (and if your friends are anything like mine they'll try a side-event once and unless they love it will never want to do it again :P). Hope that makes more sense :)

Cinaclov commented on The Pokémon Company Lays Down The Law On Chea...:

I think some people here are perhaps a little naive about how you can manipulate the random number generator to get good Pokémon. Nothing external is applied to the game, all you're doing is using maths and timing to work out when to get those perfect stat/shiny Pokémon, rather than endless breeding and hoping for the best. It's a bit confusing to get your head round (I can't figure it, I still have to spend hours breeding competitive Pokémon properly :P) but it's a legitimate way of getting almost any competitively viable Pokémon you want.

What this means is that those 'hacked' teams of strong, shiny Pokémon that people are complaining about aren't necessarily hacked, and almost certainly aren't going away. In fact as the competitive scene grows you'll probably see more RNG'd teams.

I'd also like to point out that a lot of the limitations on how they police Pokémon at present stem from the limitations of the DS hardware - if you're playing multiplayer for example the system can't tell who disconnected, that sort of thing. Just upgrading to the 3DS should sort a lot of those.
