I had higher expectations when I saw that this game was being spearheaded by Konami's Tak Fujimoto AKA "One Milllion Troooooopsss."

The thing is, it feels like the Virtual Console for the Wii should still have life left in it. How many of us have favorite games on multiple consoles that still haven't seen release? Sure, part of it is licensing and ownership issues (I know we'll never seen Banjo-Kazooie N64 on the VC), but there are plenty of other great games just languishing. Nintendo has pretty much abandoned the VC in favor of DSiWare and WiiWare.

I don't think the same thing will happen to the handheld VC but...we need stronger releases than this. I'm still enjoying Donkey Kong '94 but there are way too many generic sports games that Nintendo could pad each week out with. Instead, let's see some good games - and how about more than one a week? I can understand that something like Link's Awakening might deserve its own week to shine but, come on. Last week could have easily been Donkey Kong '94, Tennis, and Double Dragon. All three different genres, all appeal to different consumers.

In case anybody else stumbles upon this page, I have to say that I think Gley Lancer is severely underrated on this website. In my humble opinion, a 7/10 does not do this game justice. It's a great, very anime-influenced take on the Gradius and R-Type formulas, with gorgeous parallax scrolling and a great (for the Genesis/MD) soundtrack. If you're a fan of shmups, don't hesitate to download this game.

I'm a huge fan of the genre but certainly no expert and I still managed to beat Gley Lancer and get the "Good Ending." It's challenging but not impossible, and if you die and lose your power-ups you don't have to worry about being screwed over. At 10 stages, the game is longer than your standard arcade shooter and doesn't necessarily have to be completed on a one credit run.

Overall - this is an excellent game!
