Barely_Able commented on Ninterview: Jeremy Parish On Cataloguing The H...:

I recommend that people check out some of Mr. Parish's retrospectives on the subject. This is a particularly good one:

http://www.usgamer.net/articles/the-game-boy-legacy-a-25th-anniversary-celebration

Also checkout his retronauts podcast (the old one if it is still accessible and the new one).

@Peach64 The ambition is not much weirder than chrontendo (which may have been an inspiration for this project), which seeks to catalog the NES games from order of release. In fact, the Gameboy was arguably one of the most important touchstones in gaming, so cataloging its lineup is very important for history's sake. I don't want to speak for him, but Mr. Parish does detailed analysis of game levels through his Anatomy of a Game series, so he seems to have a love for this sort of deep retrospective and review for things in this medium that shaped it so much.

@Yosher Yeah, it really should be a free update. I'm not sure there is any value other than for people that may get tons of street passes to the point where their old ones are removed (and even that isn't worth it because by this point, those people would have collected all of the hats and completed the games).

@Yosher Apparently you get the birthday tracker, which gives you plaza tickets, can save 100 VIPs (including special miis), allows you to shorten the greeting segment when you get new street passes, and you can change the background music and play it during sleep mode.

@MoonKnight7 Most Starbucks in the US have switched over to google for their wifi, so the Nintendo Zones have gone away with them. Better for people at Starbucks, but now the primary street pass zones in most cities are gone. And if you still are in an area with AT&T then it is only a matter of time before it switches.

Ales you wonder how long it will take to release with the new N64 and DS planned releases. Nintendo does seem to like one, maybe two, VC games a week is all. And let's not forget the games missing between regions that still need to be released.

@Henmii amiibo makes Nintendo boatloads so its here to stay in every direct for the near future. Personally I think the amiibo card idea at least was essential to the gameplay. Mind you designing a house was my least favorite part of animal crossing, but the card idea is a cheaper option and seems better for being integral to actual gameplay.

Decent showing, but there are some markedly worrying gaps in the release schedule. DLC and retro games are fine to fill small gaps, but they better have some big E3 announcements coming. 3DS is particularly lacking in the release department for the second half of the year.

@Vineleaf Fire emblem is a perfect game to emulate Hearthstone. Card packs with characters and weapons and whatnot. They have 25 years of history to draw from too, so expansions would be quite easy. Plus they could get the Pokemon company to help if they need since they already have experience working on a trading card game for iOS.

@Nintendian I like this idea. Animal Crossing mobile where you are only allowed to do things for a set amount of time and if you want to buy things better buy bell packs from the in app store! Tom Nook is even perfect as an overlord to pay off your loan with real cash money!

Then people will say, i'll just buy a Nintendo handheld and the new game and save the money while having a better experience. And that is just one game!

@Josaku Nintendo is doing all of the game development, quality control, and interface development. DeNA is doing all of the backend technical stuff to ensure the games work on iOS and Android. So this will require dedicated Nintendo teams. Personally, Nintendo has the resources to hire a mobile development division, and with them outsourcing the backend, it shouldn't even require that big a staff. i don't see this affecting the production of games for 3DS, WiiU, and eventual successor consoles (not that they are churning those out at an amazing clip anyway).

@rjejr Lol, not sure how many will get the Jonestown reference. I say this is not a white night for Nintendo fans (although many have been drinking the mobile = doomed kool aid). I personally think that Nintendo has a good opportunity to use mobile games to get people interested in their dedicated gaming platforms. They could easily throw in advertisements for games in their smartphone titles and even link to websites about other games on consoles. It will all come down to how they price games, and if they don't parasitize potential traditional game sales by offering up decent mobile alternatives.

If we go off of standards for console reveal to launch, NX is at least a year and a half out. Quite frankly I could see them pushing it to 2017 if it is a wiiU replacement so as to not alienate that install base. Can't wait for the thousands of speculation threads that will be made between now and then.......

@Oren87 hard to tell from just tweets. Saw a slide with mobile devices in one side of a text bubble and 3ds,wiiu,and,nx on the other. I think it could be a device for streaming these new titles and maybe virtual console/eshop games. That's just speculation I'm reading of course.

What is amazing is the excuse. The lead designer drew a poster and put Steam, PS, and Xbox logos on it and said it just stuck that way. Personally I am not going to be mad at the company, but they can admit their real reasoning for not wanting it to go to WiiU.

@Folkloner I know they advertised the Tropical Freeze/Donkey Kong virtual console promotion on the gamepad quick start menu. I think that is something nintendo should do more of. Maybe splash new releases or sales on the top of the screen when you boot up the gamepad. I don't think it is that intrusive and is free advertising to a captive audience.

If nintendo is working with developers now to make this an option and even starting it with their own shop games (admittedly only one), maybe there is hope they will try to broaden the implementation. Still seems like an account system would be easier than needing to get a code for the other version. Baby steps I guess.

Barely_Able commented on Poll: Do Video Game Reviews Need To Have A Score?:

With the proliferation of incomplete review builds and lack of online play prior to launch, review scores can be very misleading. Look at most of the major releases this past winter or Sim City for some case studies. Then websites have the uncomfortable decision of altering a review score or keeping as is with an addendum once they realize a game is broken. And I don't think those changes are reflected on metacritic, which in and of itself is a problem with how much the industry lives and dies by it (jobs and bonuses decided by scores, reviewers caring more about getting a review out on release rather than after experiencing the entire game, or lack of progression for the medium out of fear of lower scores affecting sales). Those reasons alone should be enough to scrap scores.

Also people should read to see what the game offers or what issues are present. I like the idea of a yes/no/maybe later option.

Barely_Able commented on Nintendo Download: 5th February (North America):

You would think that they would want to continue the Wii promotions knowing that there are other games on offer, but this seems to be the usual nintendo style of things. Start out a new offering with a bang, forget about it for a while, and then drip feed the rest after everyone has forgotten about it.

For all asking (at least for NOA), elite status rewards will be given out in April. You have to get your status by March 31. Then you have until April 30 to redeem your elite reward. It will be only digital games for 3DS/WiiU again, so maybe wait to buy those year old/less expensive games.

Barely_Able commented on Club Nintendo to Close, With Replacement Loyal...:

@ikki5 It also looks like the reward codes expire on July 31 as well. I have an NES remix code from the last time that I probably need to give away because I will most likely not be getting a Wii U in that time frame (new baby really put that on hold). So make sure to download your stuff right away. I'll probably put that code up for trade (or give away) at the end of the sale assuming that it isn't on offer for everyone else (or I will trade it for a lower priced option). So everyone from NA remember that.

Looks like everyone should wait to get any rewards until the last possible minute (or at least whenever they put up the last of the offers) as it appears all the titles on offer will be available until the end of the program. Hopefully the platinum reward games will be worthwhile this year. I know I am going on a digital purchase hiatus until I see the elite rewards and club rewards.

@InVerted I am not sure a new Advance Wars will be coming. The last one was never released in Japan save for a platinum reward 5 years after release. I think it is only popular in the west. This is the same problem with metroid. Although I do remember a statement saying advance wars was in the works, but it seems unlikely anytime soon with intelligence systems making two 3DS games and SMT X. FE (if that is still in production).

I find this funny considering Nintendo has previously gone out of its way to release English/Spanish/French manuals and information as standard practice since the Wii/Ds era (if not before). Not to mention the other language versions already exist and could easily be added as a feature. Another oversight that could cost them sales (even if it is only a fraction of the total user base).

@Uberchu Lol. No reason to give it a low score. That's like rating something low on Amazon because the shipping was delayed. Although i do agree it should go to 3DS for the non ambassadors.

Having just finished this game this weekend (on 3DS), I must say it is a hardy recommendation. The later bosses are a tad too easy, especially if you have all of the energy tanks, but some of the middle bosses (stupid spider) pose a great challenge.

@Miss_Dark simple. Sell GBA games to 6 million users or 44 million. Not to mention the 3ds will likely continually outsell wiiU for the rest of their lives. It is a no brainier to sell them on both systems if possible because they will make more money. Exclusivity of VC between systems is a money loser in the long run.
