AcesHigh73 commented on Guacamelee! Developer Stirring Up A New Title,...:

As someone who really enjoyed Mutant Blobs Attack, and utterly adored Guacamelee! on Vita, I consider myself a big fan of those talented guys at Drinkbox. And with that in mind, Severed looks right up my alley. So long as it doesn't require multi-touch, it should be a perfect for Wii U (and 3DS). Here's hoping, at least.

AcesHigh73 commented on Mobot Studios Is Bringing iOS Hit Gears To Wii...:

I loved Gears on iPad (and iPhone), which looked genuinely gorgeous when it originally hit the App Store in April 2011. As someone who really digs the whole steampunk vibe — and finished the game two or three times — I'm wholly looking forward to grabbing Gears for my Wii U just as soon as it debuts on the eShop! And if that pic is anything to go by, it should look even better this time round too :-)

AcesHigh73 commented on Review: Metroid Fusion (Wii U eShop / Game Boy...:

I grabbed Superstar Saga earlier today and immediately sunk a whisker under three-and-a-half hours of pure joy into it. Plus in terms of clarity, it looks so much better on the GamePad screen than it ever did on my old SP.

Anyway, as soon as I'm done with that particular masterpiece, it's on to this one, and then grabbing the hat-trick with the utterly sublime Advance Wars. How cool is that?! In fact, I can honestly say that with GBA finally added to the VC, I've fallen head over heels for my Wii U all over again. And that, my dear fellow gamers, makes me very, very happy indeed :-)

(EDIT): Following this current eight-strong BBB (batch of brilliant beauties), I'd sooooooo love to see The Minish Cap added to Wii U's stunning VC line-up next. Who's with me?

AcesHigh73 commented on Talking Point: The Logic Behind Game Boy Advan...:

As a forty-something that's been around gaming from 'the beginning', the frankly wonderful Gameboy Advance (the SP if we're being specific) is probably my favourite system ever, ever, ever — pipping the DS in the process. Just.

It's worth mentioning though that I've always favoured handheld systems over their home console counterparts. I'm not sure why my affinity with portables runs quite so deep - maybe it's down to the close proximity with which we use them, maybe it's the independence factor of not needing the TV. Then again, perhaps it's the metric tonne of single-game handheld LCD's that my brother and I devoured growing up. Eitherway, I love me some handheld pleasu... No, not like that..!! ;-)

And it's very much with this in mind that the oft-underrated/underappreciated Wii U — and it's fabulous handheld-centric GamePad — has drawn me in and made me fall hook, line and sinker for a home console for the first time since the mighty SNES. Indeed, the GamePad was my sole motivation for chopping in my Vita and grabbing a Wii U in the first place.

So what of the news that I can soon play some of my favourite GBA (and later, DS) titles on my GamePad? Well that's some particularly fancy icing on an already utterly sublime layer-cake. And in the form of Advance Wars, Metroid Fusion and Superstar Saga, I absolutely cannot wait to take an obscenely large mouthful come update time on Thursday. You know, while the good lady wife isn't looking..

Mmmmmmm, Niiiintendo — drools uncontrollably, Homer style!

AcesHigh73 commented on Nicalis Boss Tyrone Rodriguez Thinks The Wii U...:

The Wii U GamePad's awesome 'off-TV' remote play capabilities was the SOLE REASON why I traded my PS Vita and finally went back to a home console.

I hate being restricted to the living room TV, so prior to my much loved Wii U, the last home console I bought was a PS2 — since the emergence of the DS and PSP, 100% of my gaming had been exclusively limited to handheld systems — HOWEVER, as soon I tried the GamePad with it's off-TV play, I just fell in love.

Many gamers will no doubt consider me crazy, but if a game doesn't support off-TV play, I just don't buy it. But I do own every single retail, eShop and VC game that does :-)

AcesHigh73 commented on NES-Style Action Title Insanity's Blade Is Cut...:

@FineLerv You said it mister! I'm a huge fan of the indie gaming scene, and if Nintendo continue their current trend of supporting talented indie outfits with even half the commitment and passion that Sony appear demonstrate on a seemingly daily basis — particularly on Vita — I'll be one very, VERY happy Wii U owner indeed...

A small selection of my Wii U indie wishlist:

Broken Age

Cave Story

Don't Starve

Dungeon Decenders 2

Hotline Miami

Lone Survivor

Mercenary Kings

Papers Please

Rogue Legacy

Samurai Gunn

Super Meat Boy

Super Time Force

Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP

Thomas Was Alone

...the list goes on...and on...and...

AcesHigh73 commented on Shantae and the Pirate's Curse Taking a Couple...:

I've been looking forward to Pirates Curse for what feels like forever, but like @sinalefa said, I'd much rather wait a few extra months than tackle a bunch of bugs from something that's been rushed, so it's all good with me guys.

Besides, as much as I'm looking (Way) Forward to Shantae's latest handheld adventure, it's Half-Genie Hero on Wii U that I'm most excited for!! :-)

AcesHigh73 commented on Retro City Rampage DX is "Doing Great" on 3DS:

@TeeJay I recall the 3DS version of Mighty Switch Force being updated with another five or so levels a year or two back. Oh and the excellent Mutant Mudds is scheduled to get the 'Deluxe' treatment soon.

Hmph, Mutant Mudds - ANOTHER Wii U game I wish I could play. Yep, I'm an EU gamer. Will it ever make it across the pond? I've almost given up hope :-(

AcesHigh73 commented on Retro City Rampage DX is "Doing Great" on 3DS:

I've already grabbed RCR for my 3DS, but haven't got round to anything more than a quick 'taster' sesh as yet. I also bought the WiiWare and Vita versions last year.

If only I could buy a Wii U version — or — control the original WiiWare version with the GamePad! As with pretty much all Wii games, RCR looks much, much better on Wii U, particularly when played via the GamePad, but being forced to use Wii controllers is both awkward and frustrating!!

AcesHigh73 commented on Video: These Are The Ten DS Games We Want To S...:

@zool - I guess they'll be playable on both the GamePad and your TV, much the same as with current SNES, NES Virtual Console titles. They certainly won't be revisited and remastered in the same as the gorgeous Wind Waker HD.

Either way, it's not why I bought a Wii U either, but as far as I'm concerned, the prospect of bringing DS games to Wii U via the Virtual Console makes for a very tasty bonus treat :-)

AcesHigh73 commented on Video: These Are The Ten DS Games We Want To S...:

@OldWeeDog - I too would much rather see Nintendo prioritising N64 and GC Virtual Console entries waaaay ahead of even starting to look at bringing DS content to our GamePad screens. That being said however, I'm still looking forward to the prospect of replaying some of the very finest games to ever grace a handheld system — Chinatown Wars, Phantom Hourglass and The World Ends With You, etc.

Sure, I too harbour some very small concerns as to graphical polish and how Nintendo will work around the issue of the DS' dual screen set-up, but in all honesty, as long as the games play well, I'll be more than happy.

Now, about those GameCube games...

AcesHigh73 commented on Video: These Are The Ten DS Games We Want To S...:

Great article NL, truly great. The DS is comfortably my favourite games system of all time (both home and handheld consoles), and boasts an utterly fabulous software library of mainstream, niche and cult favourites. With that in mind, here's my top ten most wanted titles to come to the Wii U's recently announced DS Virtual Console...

1. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
2. The World Ends With You
3. Chrono Trigger
4. GTA: Chinatown Wars
5. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
6. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
7. Solatorobo: Red the Hunter
8. Pokemon Black and White 2
9. Shantae: Risky's Revenge
10. Yoshi's Island

Sorry, but try as I might, I just couldn't squeeze the likes of Advance Wars (DoR), Castlevania (OoE), Elite Beat Agents, NSMB or 999 into my top ten. But hey, this paragraph is a satisfyingly sneaky way of fleshing my list out to a top fifteen, right!? ;-)

AcesHigh73 commented on Stick It To The Man on Wii U "Feels Funnier" T...:

(Stick it to the) Man, I can't wait for this. I've been holding off from grabbing the Vita version since hearing whispers of Stick it to the Man heading to Wii U a few weeks back — don't get me wrong, I like my Vita, but I LOVE my Wii U..!!

Oh and @Einherjar, I couldn't agree more about your 'gold [standard] version' comment buddy :-)

AcesHigh73 commented on Review: The LEGO Movie Videogame (Wii U):

Sorry for the brevity, but I'm running out and don't have time to read the review until tonight... Was thinking of grabbing this for my Wii U on the way home - does it support off-TV play?

It's kind of a deal breaker!!

AcesHigh73 commented on Hyper Light Drifter Delayed to End-of-Year Hol...:

I'm really, really, REALLY looking forward to getting down and dirty with this gorgeous adventure on my Wii U....but Hyper Light Drifter is also a game that I'd hate to see rushed, so I'm cool with the delay. Okay, perhaps a smidge reluctantly though ;-)

AcesHigh73 commented on Nicalis: We'd Like To Support Europe, But Nint...:

For those of us here in europe who often feel treated as second-class citizens, this situation is both extremely frustrating and somewhat saddening. And while I hear what Tyrone Rodriguez has to say about NoE, I tend to agree with Jools Watsham's view that with multiple rating agencies, getting a game released in EU territories must be an expensive and time-consuming nightmare - particularly for indie outfits such as Renegade Kid.

That being said however, Jools' fabulous Mutant Mudds Deluxe was a Wii U launch title stateside, and what, fifteen months later, it's still yet to make an appearance on EU eShop's. Now, considering that it is available - granted, without the Deluxe bells and whistles - in europe on 3DS, and was only a few months behind the NA release, something doesn't quite add up for me.

I definitely agree that there are significant barriers that make it unnecessarily complicated, long-winded and expensive for talented developers to get their games into the hands european gamers. I also believe that Nintendo of Europe could do much more or help the likes of Renegade Kid and Nicalis. HOWEVER, with so many other indie titles bolstering european eShop digital shelves, for me it is also evident that the above studios need to start taking a long, hard look at themselves too!

AcesHigh73 commented on Nintendo Planning to Offer "Flexible Price Poi...:

Sounds good to me! As someone who has bought 12 retail games on Wii U, and downloaded 16 eShop titles (plus another 4 on the VC) in the last twelve months, any kind of dynamic/flexible pricing structure has this gamers backing!

AcesHigh73 commented on Zoink Games Has "Great News" On The Way for Wi...:

If it is indeed Stick it to the Man that's headed to the eShop, then that's great news for us Wii U owners. I grabbed it for my Vita a month or two back, and I'm glad to say that it's a fabulously old-skool-flavoured adventure. But Wii U is my 'main' console and 'system of choice', and as such, I'll be only too happy to engage in a spot of double-dipping!

AcesHigh73 commented on Dragon Fantasy Set To Bring Retro Goodness To ...:

I'm with @komodo182 on this one — should Muteki decide to bring their brace of pixel art Dragon Fantasies to Wii U, then I'd definitely bite. As for the upcoming 3DS versions? Well they're more like a possible maybe. Yup, a definite possible maybe :-)

@unrandomsam — speaking of Retro City Rampage, buddy, it's a shame that Brian Provinciano has never announced any plans to bring that particular potpourri of retro deliciousness to Wii U as well as 3DS. Seeing as he pretty much brought it to every other system — bar mobile, of course ;-) — including Wii U's predessesor, I'd have thought a Retro City Rampage U would have definitely been on the cards by now. Perhaps it has something to do with all the Nintendoom that's been doing the rounds these past few months?

Either way, I for one love the idea of kicking back on the sofa on a rainy Saturday afternoon, a good set of headphones jacked up to the GamePad for maximum chip tune enjoyment, and partaking in a healthy spot of riotous, pixelated fun. Sounds cool, right? Well, to a 40yr old boy like myself, it's right up my alley!

Have a good weekend everyone!

AcesHigh73 commented on Nintendo Download: 16th January (Europe):

Does anyone happen to know if F1 Race Stars will support off-TV play? If it does, I reckon I'll probably bite! I got the game for free on PS3 last year through PS+ but sadly, never got round to playing it before trading both my Sony consoles (PS3 and Vita) when I finally bit the bullet and bought my [beloved] Wii U and 3DS XL last November - I'm jolly glad I did too! Well, except for those 'free' PS+ downloads, of course!

Oh and by the way, I must admit to being a smidge disappointed by Dr. Luigi's £13.49 price tag! Had it been say, £8.99 for example, I'd have been more than happy. Still, I know what I'm like, and I'll doubtless hit 'buy' in a moment of spontaneous madness come Thursday. It's what I do!

AcesHigh73 commented on Review: CastleStorm (Wii U eShop):

I enjoyed CastleStorm so much that I bought it twice! Once on my Wii U and another for my Vita. And I'm jolly glad that I did too! Awesome downloadable - don't be fooled by the Angry Birds(ish) mechanics, CastleStore is soooooo much more than a slingshot shooter :-)

AcesHigh73 commented on Feature: Time to Vote For Your Game of the Yea...:

With tons of top drawer games launching across Wii U and 3DS, 2013 has been an incredible year for Nintendo fans.

For me, Nintendo Game of the Year has to be a straight two-horse-race between Super Mario 3D World and A Link Between Worlds. Both games are absolutely stunning and more than worthy of the accolade, but I reckon 3D World pips Link's latest adventure to the post — just!
