  • Review MadWorld (Wii)

His interests include drinking, women, cigarettes and cigars - but not necessarily in that order.

Ever since we saw the first batch of screenshots for MadWorld we've been intrigued by its overwhelming style. Clearly influenced by the dark ink of graphic novels such as Frank Miller's Sin City, MadWorld is presented in supremely pretty ultra...

  • News Sonic Writer Talks About His Love-Hate Relationship With The Fandom

    "I have a chequered history"

In the same interview on the YouTube channel RebelTaxi, Sonic the Hedgehog writer Ken Pontac - who has seemingly moved on from Sega, spoke about his "chequered history" with the Sonic fandom over the years. As much as he loves them, he admits a "vocal group" who hated on him for "dumb reasons" have essentially "screw

  • News PlatinumGames Co-Founder Says MadWorld And The Wonderful 101 Were The Most Fun To Make

Working with Kamiya can be 'a very painful experience'

PlatinumGames is a studio which is growing ever more popular with Nintendo fans, largely thanks to the release of some wonderful exclusives over recent years. We all know about series like Bayonetta - and we're desperately waiting for Bayonetta 3 to show up - but it appears that other, arguably...

  • News PlatinumGames President Saddened by Decline of New Ideas

    Pledges to bring smiles back

Japanese developer PlatinumGames has been responsible for some pretty innovative games over the past five years: Wii gorefest MadWorld and DS space RPG Infinite Space for Nintendo's formats, as well as the superlative Bayonetta and Vanquish for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Five years in and not a sequel in sight,...

  • News MadWorld Director's Tango Appointment Has Nothing to Do with Dancing

    The Capcom vein runs deep

It's always sad when a developer leaves a company responsible for giving us one of the more original and much-needed shake-ups in the Wii's library of games, but it's also interesting to see where they end up going. Shigenori Nishikawa, director of MadWorld, is to leave Platinum Games for a position at Tango, Shiji Mikami's...

  • News MadWorld Director Interested In Stab At Sequel

Thinks mature-rated game was very well received

With all the whining and bellyaching over mature-rated games on Wii lately, it's interesting to hear about a studio so unfazed, even keen on the prospect of doing more in the area. And that studio is Platinum Games. Their first-ever release, the hyper-violent monochrome brawler

  • Podcast NLFM Episode 1 - Open For Business!

We kick off our first game/chip music podcast with YMCK, Anamanaguchi, Metroid Metal and more!

  • News MadWorld Soundtrack Gets A North America Digital Release

It'll burrow into your skull like a lamp post.

One of my favorite parts about MadWorld was the soundtrack: stylized hip hop tunes that fit really well with the generally stylish carnage Jack would find himself in. It's probably my most enjoyed game soundtrack since No More Heroes unleashed Pleather For Breakfast on my boss-battling ears. Pictobits...

  • News Sega Not Giving Up On Mature Wii Titles Just Yet

Recent retail disappointments haven't dented Sega's confidence

As much as we loved Madworld and House of the Dead: Overkill, neither title sold particularly well, which has led many 'industry experts' to suggest that mature, hardcore games just can't find an audience on Nintendo's console. In the light of two high-profile commercial bombs you'd...

  • News This Is How Long Wii Play M-Rated Games

See, people like killing each other on Wii too

Listmania continues! In a nice addition to last week's reveal of what Wii owner's play, Kotaku has compiled a list using the Nintendo Channel's play data on how much time is spent with M-rated games. Call of Duty: World at War steals the most play time, with the average user unloading 34:28 hours into...

Sega's latest hardcore Wii title didn't exactly open with the sales many expected.

While MadWorld certainly has received a lot of praise from the media and many gamers, Sega's latest hardcore Wii title didn't exactly open with the sales many expected. The NPD has confirmed that for the month of March, MadWorld managed to sell 66,000 units, a...

About The Game

MADWORLD is an inventive third-person action game exclusively for Wii. Produced by Atsushi Inaba, MADWORLD has a unique black and white style, depicting an incredibly sharp backdrop that straddles graphic novels and 3D worlds.

As players battle opponents, they must master the use of various weapons and items found within their environment, such as chainsaws and street signs, while entertaining sports commentary adds to the third-person gameplay. With its irreverent humour and over-the-top violence, MADWORLD will deliver a unique core gaming experience currently missing on the Wii system.

MadWorld revolves around the themes of brutality and exhilaration. To give MadWorld the graphical edge to match its brutal theme, we tried removing all color from the world except for blood. As a result, we decided the best concept color way to convey blood, and thus brutality, was against this black and white backdrop. Knowing that there are no other action games with this sort of avant-garde graphical style, our course was set.

By adding touches from American comics, like the exclamations that appear during action scenes, anyone who knows how it feels to read a comic book (or watch an episode of Tom & Jerry) should instantly be able to enjoy playing MadWorld. We are also taking the simple controls of the Wii and adding a variety of actions to the gameplay mix.

Often times, brutality is expressed in a spiteful nature. There are already plenty of games out there that hit this mark; however, we decided that MADWORLD’s brutality should be aimed at providing the user with a sense of exhilaration during play.

To give you an example from gameplay, we have a scene where you can pull a street sign from the ground and shove it into a enemy’s head. However, I thought that it is much more fun to stab someone with a sign that actually has some sort of meaning as opposed to a knife. We tried the idea out, and the reaction amongst the team was so positive, I knew this was the way to proceed.

While one type of action is already fun, one of MadWorld’s most innovative points is the ability to link and layer these actions together. For instance, you can grab that enemy with the street sign through his head and throw him against a spiked wall.
