Super Smash Bros. Melee Review

Region: North America (NTSC)

Nintendo aren't known for their beat-em up's. All that changed back in 1999 when Nintendo released Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64. Will the Gamecube's sequel keep this magic mixture alive?

This game looks stunning! It runs at a constant 60hz framerate, no slowdown with this game. There is even an opportunity to turn on a filtering option, which makes the game either smoother (on) or sharper (off) The characters look just like they did in their own games, obviously most look better as they were in old 2D games ;)

SSBM keeps the intense pace going with frantic gameplay with music based on the level that your are on. On one of the Donkey Kong levels, for example, the music is taken from the N64's Donkey Kong Country (2?) game, with the Kong's rapping.

This is one of them games that is hard to review. I didn't actually like SSBM very much, but I can understand it's good points and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to other people. It is one of those games that could leave you beaten by a little kid that mashes the buttons on your controller. To me at least, there is more luck and 'hit everything fast' ways of winning than skillfully controlling your character.

The basic Versus mode is what you'll play most of the time when SSBM is in your 'cube, but there are many other modes available. Single player modes include event matches, where you must defeat different enemies in a set match. Home run contest, where you must hit 'Sandbag' as far as possible. And adventure mode where you play a platform game, SSBM style :)
You can unlock new characters and trophies in the game too. When you have a trophy you can look at it from any angle in the trophy cabinet which is a nice touch.

Conclusion

If you are a beatem up fan, or a young button masher, you should like this game. With all there is to unlock and the fun of simply knocking your friends about, this game will be in your 'cube a long time. Personally, however I would prefer a more skillful game to waste my time on =)

All the classic Nintendo characters in a frenzied battle.. just bring your own controller ;)

8/10
