Bust-A-Move Bash! on the Wii is based upon the same tried and tested formula of all the same incarnations of the game that have come to pass. You control a small cannon at the bottom of the screen and use this to fire bubbles at a constantly moving playfield. Matching similarly coloured bubbles will cause them to disappear and so the process continues as the action gets more and more frantic.
It’s a tried and tested formula which we all know works well and so the interest lies with what developers Happy Happening bring that is new to the now dated series.
With an extensive range of control technology within the Wii Remote it was pretty obvious that Bust-A-Move Bash! was going to take advantage of motion sensitive controls allowing a number of methods to spice up the Bust-A-Move experience.
There are a number of control methods on hand allowing you to take your pick on your favourite; the prominent control method has you twisting your hand while pointing the remote at the screen, to get the angle you require. You will also be able to hold the remote pointing straight up (think “The Umbrella” in Wario Ware) and tilt the remote to angle shots.
It remains to be known how well the game actually controls (stay tuned for our review for more information) but without any support of the classic controller or even any mention of a control scheme allowing the use of the Wii Remotes D-pad it would be fair to say that the control’s have to be accurate otherwise the game could end up fatally flawed.
In order to keep the game fresh a number of modes have been added or overhauled. One such example is the multiplayer mode in which players instead of being given their own playing field now compete against each other on the same playing field. The multiplayer mode also supports 8-players with the nunchuck and classic controller acting as the additional control methods to the standard 4 remotes.
In addition to the standard and multiplayer modes there is an “Endless” mode, “Puzzle” mode and “Shooting” mode. While the former options speak for themselves the “Shooting” mode adds a shoot ‘em up twist to the Bust-A-Move formula by having you hold the Wii Remote as a light gun.
Bust-A-Move Bash! is shaping up to be a colourful and chaotic affair but the jury will be out on the games control mechanism come it’s release on May 11th.
