We're only a few weeks away from the launch of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury on Switch, and while the Bowser's Fury expansion might be the biggest selling point for those who already own the Wii U original, the base game will be receiving some very welcome tweaks, too.
On its official website, Nintendo has gone into a little more detail on the platforming present in the main game, specifically highlighting how the new Switch release will enhance the original's already impressive gameplay. "As an enhanced version of Super Mario 3D World, some brand new gameplay improvements have been made to spice up this adventure," the site reads.
Here are the improvements to look out for:
"All characters have received a boost to their running speed and climb even higher after picking up a Super Bell, making platforming that little bit snappier. You can now also use gyro controls for certain sections of the game that previously required touch controls."
The boost in running speed is something that we'd already noticed ourselves from examining trailer footage – you can see that in action in our video below. What's interesting here, though, is that we now know characters will have better climbing abilities and that the Wii U game's touch control sections have been replaced with gyro control support. Neat.
It's all sounding like it'll be another solid port on Switch, and an especially nice treat for those who never had the chance to play the original.
Are you sold on this new 3D World release? Have you already got your pre-order in? Let us know in the comments.
Thanks to Max for the tip!

Dang this is looking better every update, I need money fast
Kinda funny how when it was first revealed people were arguing whether the footage had been sped up for the trailer lol, now we have official confirmation that the characters are faster.
Insert Ironic meme here
Day 1 for me. Cannot wait. Mario releases always get me hyped.
Gonna grab the japanese demo on the 28th
i still hope the touch controls work in portable mode, i have a split pad pro so i cant really use gyro. galaxy was a dissapointment in that regard (the manta ray star)
@pixelpatch theres a demo!? :0
Bought a copy for myself and a friend so we can both play it online
I kind of doubt there's a demo
Edit: looked it up, and ye no demo
I asked for this as a valentines day gift so I can play it with my partner.
Meh. But I’ve been told I have to write more than that.. so.. meh
@NikHogan You need to set your account region to Japan to download it, but yup there's a demo out in 3 days
I wish Galaxy had this treatment someday. It's too freakin' slow.
And the Wii U's march toward irrelevance continues.
Glad they're taking the opportunity to touch up the game in a variety of ways, though. Bowser's Fury was already a nice addition, but stuff like this will help to make even the base experience feel fresher.
This always felt like a game that belonged on a portable system to me. Glad it's finally making the jump.
@FroZtedFlakerZz I mixed it up with this demo coming out on the 28th, I was so wrong:

I think 3D world and 3D Land were such underrated classics. Sure the Aesthetic was only slightly more interesting than NSMB (although with way more variety), but the level design on each entry was just so clever. 3D Land was so simple and perfect for 10-minute play sessions. In fact it was the only game I have ever 100% completed.
3D World on the other hand had so many ideas that it became a bit unfocused, sure, but it was also never stopping with new things to do and try.
Had they really focused on a unique aesthetic theme for those games I think they'd be regarded much higher these years later.
@alwaysasn love Super Mario 3D as well. This and 3D World are my favorite 3D Mario games after Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 because I see Mario games as an action obstacle-course game with minimum exploration.
But I could never do 100% on SM 3D Land because of that very hard last stage.
I managed to beat the very last stage in 3D World, though, but only with Rosalina because her spin gives her more air time.
@alwaysasn 3D world is one of the few multiplayer titles I actually find enjoyable. Smashing 4 people into the side scrolling levels was never my thing but I loved the open concept of this one.
I wonder why they adjusted the wall climbing ability.
@Paulo Interesting. See I never finished 3D World 100% because I found late game too hard. Honestly, the last level in 3D Land is tough but if you go in with Racoon or Tanooki Mario to get past the first bit with the hammer bros it isn't too bad. But it was a proud moment for me haha.
And I don't mind the collectathon Mario games. But I thought Oddysey was really fun on the first play through and horribly boring any time I've tried to play it since.
Mario 64 is still the best of that style IMO, even with all its dated flaws.
@pixelpatch Yeah. I remember so many people complaining about the multiplayer and how half baked it seemed when the game came out. But that was always my favourite way to play it.
It may be time for me to sell my pokemon cards..... NO! Wait for botw 2!
I preordered as soon as it was possible. For me it really is the closest Nintendo has ever gotten to recreating the feel of the original super Mario side scrollers in 3D form. A wonderful game and I am excited for everyone who didn’t own a wii u to experience this one. I did revisit it on wii u in 2020 and found it to be a bit slow, so the speed increase for all characters is definitely welcome.
This is honestly shaping up to be the best WiiU port for the switch yet IMO
Yes day one preordered months ago:)
@pixelpatch i already have a japanese account! (thanks to the p5s demo last year) thisll be exciting! I lost the wii u game
Looking good👌
This and Little Nightmares 2 are both out within a day of each other. I have both pre-ordered and I cannot wait for either.
Does this game NEED to be made easier?
Maybe they should update the WiiU version's Speed as well?
Quite glad to see the changes. Super Mario 3D World is great but the speed up is a good change. Moves like the long jump didn't really clear much more(if any) distance than the standard jump because you couldn't get much momentum behind the characters.
Well the Wii U gamepad screen had around 16ms of input lag, but the Switch screen is around the same number.
I loved this game on Wii U, but never beat it because I mostly played it with friends, but then moved and didn't have homies to play with. I dunno if I want to buy it full price right away, but I might end up doing so. The online multiplayer is a huge selling feature along with all the upgrades and a whole new game as well. Ports aren't always worth it, but I appreciate all the work put into this one. Such a fun game.
@alwaysasn I always try with the Racoon suit, but upon death, you need to pick the suit in another courses.
I thought the same about Odyssey: excellent until you complete the main objective in each kingdom, then not so fun when it's about exploration to find extra stars.
Odyssey has always been a favorite of mine from just how fast you can move basically anywhere. 3D World was fine for a more linear focused game of course, but I always hated waiting for that weird fart cloud thing that increases your speed. Definitely looking forward to this update
i always ended up skipping those gamepad levels on replays (unless specifically going for 100%) since i really wasnt a fan of them though at least using gyro would be quite a bit more preferable than having to move your hand away from the buttons to touch the screen, which felt counterintuitive as all hell.
@Ralizah I've recently been searching for Wii U games on eBay so that my Wii U didn't become completely irrelevant--well, other than being a way to play Wii games through HDMI, anyway.
Mario 3D World, Captain Toad, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess were always my most wanted Wii U to Switch ports. So your halfway there Nintendo.
I'd still take Splinter Cell Blacklist though. How about it Ubisoft? It's not like your doing anything worthwhile with the franchise anymore anyway. 😑
Why increase the running speed? I always complete Mario games faster than I'd like to anyway...
@Nymos Wait, this has online multiplayer? Is it only with friends or can you play with random people?
@Supadav03 Same
Has Nintendo milked the Mario franchise as much on any other Nintendo console? I’m not complaining. I understand the reasoning. It just seems like, in the past, there would be long periods with no mainline Mario game. With all of these ports recent times, you have to wonder, what’s their plans for Galaxy 2? It has probably been spoken of, ad nauseam, but, I wonder if there’s a remake in the works for the new Switch. Maybe a launch title.
Course I’ve got a preorder in. Simply cannot wait to play it again! I remember back when the Wii u one came out and everyone lauded it. I didn’t have that same impression but I enjoyed it. Over time I’ve grown to, in my head as I haven’t played it since - rose tinted glasses, appreciate it more and more. Like the Godzilla films they’ve aged amazingly.
At this rate I’m going to need a 2tb microsd! I’ve already got 1tb in now and it’s already full. As you all know I buy mostly all games on Switch unless it was made by a gamergate person, or the company is rotten in other ways. I only like to support good people.
I say all. At the start of the Switch’s life I would buy literally all games by good developers. Now I tend to buy all the big games. Big be they Indie or AAA. 75% I haven’t played yet.
Recently had to delete Mortal Kombat 11 as that game is ballooning in size AND requires an always on connection to earn its snide ingame currencies. It’s tough to love that game. Instead I’m playing Smash Bros eagerly awaiting Doomguy, and Rayman. Adore those two characters’ games respectively. Rayman Origins is better than that newer one though. Wonder why they simply stopped making those? Origins was a huge hit, and the sequel was highly enjoyed by many. Released only 2 years apart IIRC (I first heard about the sequel waiting to get picked up by a studio manager of a very highly respected game company in a rural area. Barely had a 3G signal).
That’s all for now. Glad Biden won the most fair election the USA ever had.
Already preordered on the shop.. and I can’t wait!
@Mynameishello what’s the purpose of buying all these games if you don’t have time to play them. Do you think you get to bring your switch to heaven with you where you can spend the first 100 years finishing the games? On top of everything if you only buy games one at a time the old games which you would not have gotten to anyways would have dropped on price on the eshop. I can’t think of any reason to collect so much stuff you’ll never use except for gotta catch them all brainwashing.
That was my main complaint about 3D world. It played like you were running through molasses
Playing 3d all stars & just started super Mario galaxy loving it will definitely be getting world + bowsers fury
@sixrings I’m okay for money and I like to help support developers who are decent. Plus it’s an addiction I think lol. I was poor growing up. We only had like 2 NES games. No Gameboy. No snes. A second hand mega drive with 4 games and that was that. I skipped gaming till the Wii era. Made some savvy investments and around then (2011?) I just decided to buy everything. My kids love that I do that too.
Please don’t think I don’t play my Switch. I only play 25% of my games but I’ve got thousands of hours logged across them. I have all the other consoles too and a dedicated PC VR room. But they all bore me. Nothing is as good as the Switch. Not the 3DS, Wii U (where a lot of switch big hitters come from as we all know). PC’s community puts me off. Too many bullies in there and I just don’t like that. Similarly if I find devs bullying people they go on my blacklist. Bullying is lame.
Waiting for a discount on this one, but getting more and more tempted to get it day one.
Quite hyped to go through it again, already beat Champion's Road with Luigi and Rosalina, guess I'll do it with Toad this time. Also, ~DAISY PLEASE~. She's already in the Super Mario Run mobile game, and the two other princesses are playable in 3D World. It's time!
@sketchturner Yup! It has online multiplayer due to lockdown. I presume you can only play with friends, but it's easy enough to exchange friend codes on discord or something
Does anyone actually have friends to play online with this game cuz I sure don’t.
Didn't have an issue with the running speed on the Wii U version but this is a nice addition.
nice addition!
