As expected, EA's premium sports series FIFA will be returning to the Nintendo Switch this year. Once again, the hybrid platform will be receiving a slightly updated version - officially known as FIFA 21: Legacy Edition.
If you've played any of the previous entries on the Switch, you should already know what to expect, but for those who don't, here's a rundown from EA's FIFA 21 FAQ:
What will be included in FIFA 21 on Nintendo Switch?
The FIFA 21 Legacy Edition on Nintendo Switch features the latest kits and squad updates for the upcoming season, updated presentation (in-game menus and broadcast overlays), but no new game modes or gameplay innovations.
To make it clear, the game will be running on the existing engine (designed for Switch), rather than the next-generation one. And as noted above, there'll be no new game modes or gameplay innovations.
This newest entry will arrive in October on PS4, X1, and PC - but at the moment there's no mention of a Nintendo release date. Until we hear more about this version, check out the latest EA Sports trailer (for other platforms) below:
Will you be returning to the pitch later this year? Tell us in the comments.

Thanks, EA! Whatever would we do without you!
Honestly a cash grab
FIFA 18.2 what a joy! Why even bother? If the sales are that crap, just cut your losses and don't release FIFA on the Switch....
If you needed a reason or example to know Why EA needs to go as a company this is is it. The sheer laziness on their part To even try and put a above average port on the switch after only grudgingly putting anything out because of better profit margins of the switch, just shows EA just does not have it anymore.
Embarrassing. Just kill it off.
I brought the 18 edition and enjoy the game.
My last purchase of the franchise, had been the 2005 edition on the Nintendo GameCube.
Unfortunately, there is little incentive to buy these “new” versions. The differences are insignificant.
Yay, more shallow, lazy, and overpriced half-baked Fifa ports on Switch.🙄
@SPL64 FIFA 04 and 05 on the Cube were brilliant. The EA sports games definitely peaked back then, the Tiger Woods, MLB and Madden games were great in the mid noughties.
EA Not Welcome!
At this point why not just release a dlc for 15$.....
Oh wow... why not just call it FIFA and then just update the game each year or DLC...
Ohhh i forgot ... it’s EA... so $$$$$$$$
Eh.. I'm not really bothered this time. Likely because of the other announcements and the fact there are also next gen versions coming, which kinda make the Switch version look like a simple handheld companion game.
EA: We are very interested in developing games for the Switch.*
*Games may actually be bare bone ports. Commitment to this statement may vary. For best results, please buy the most expensive edition of every game at launch and all DLC at full MSRP
EA has come to town, lock your doors and board up your windows, gets gonna get wild out there.
Europe will still buy it in droves.
Seriously, who keeps paying for this? I'd rather get 6 titles than a last gen FIFA game.
The only reason people will buy it is online matchmaking. Impossible to find people online in FIFA 18 or 19. EA are just putting out lazy cash grabs.
@C3dr4c why ask $ 15 if you can ask $ 60?
I'd like to take this time to remind ya'll that 2K has managed to port the last four NBA 2K entries to Switch , with NBA 2K21 on its way, while maintaining content parity across all platforms (the only difference is a lower resolution and frame rate for the NSW version, but that's to be expected).
Meanwhile, EA is porting an already gimped version of FIFA 19 to Switch for the second time in a row lmao
And are they still going to charge £60 for this? Of course they are
They should just give fifa to the company who did the witcher 3 and the outer worlds ports
@playstation_king or panic button, they`ve made cool ports too
So... this is basically DLC for a three year old game, sold at the price of a new game, right? Stay classy, EA!
@RPGamer EA is a really simple company. They will always do the thing that makes them the most money.
Same here. Millions of people own Switches. So releasing Fifa on it, is a no brainer.
But you know not everyone will buy Fifa, so putting effort in a new game is a "waste" of money.
Also people will stop playing if the game isn't updated, so making a legacy version is the way to go. Because you can't package a DLC code like you can package a game card.
If they'd actually made the game for the gamers. Fifa would be a new game every console generation, that's updated and improved on with dlc packs / a MMO-like subscription.
This is pretty disgusting, even for EA. Triple dipping on Switch owners with full retail price palette swaps.
They lost me at F....
I'm not even a football/soccer fan but I am annoyed by this! They are releasing the same game with a 60 dollar update and maybe new box-art!
@graysoncharles frostbite is in theory compatible with the switch it just needs EA to port it over (or hire a third party to do so)
@iulis84 in fairness it’s an update of FIFA 19 (which was an improvement on 18) just a shame they didn’t bother trying to improve it since then.
As much as a dislike EA I would be tempted by a half decent update to FIFA. I said this last time but something like the volta mode seems made for the switch.
"NoW ThAts SoMe SuPpOrT"
I'm not really interested in FIFA, but I kind of feel bad for the developer. No matter what you feel about EA (as a publisher), having only a year to develop a game is a very short time. Building a new game from the ground up for the Switch is even harder, so doing it under a year is just not a reasonable timeframe.
I think EA should release new FIFA games every other year, to give more time for the developer. But the problem is, the players and teams change every year. So I think the best solution would be to release a new game every other year, and update the new info every other year as a DLC.
And to be honest, I don't think it would make much of a difference to the profits either, as I'm sure more people are ready to buy games if the additional effort is visible.
Now I'm not a football fan, but are even the regular yearly versions on PS and XB worth getting? What are they adding that makes it worthwhile?
The Switch version is clearly a cashgrab.
Now that's some support.
Nintendo need to step in and give them a kick up the arse. Don't let them release it.
I wanna say goal but instead I’ll say
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
So many people are getting upset here...and with good reason too, but I believe the only reason EA can get away with this for this long is because they have no competition in that field (no pun intended 😁). So the company I'm really pissed off at is Konami not EA. If they were releasing PES on Switch, EA wouldn't try this.
At least we're still getting FIFA, but it's typically poor form on EA's part. They should have included something... ANYTHING to differentiate the Switch version from previous intalments. Didn't the Wii instalments have a Mii mode? Even an addition like that would go a long way in fostering goodwill and helping the audience/brand to grow. For FIFA diehards, they aren't even trying to make the Switch games complement the home console versions.
It'll still be the best handheld FIFA/football game on a handheld, but it's unfortunate the EA care so little to be so inexcusably complacent. If I were a FIFA head, I would be fuming that my brand is being undermined in this fashion.
Fortunately FIFA games go on sale very quickly so that anybody who wants the updated roster can pick it up for less than half price a month or two after launch.
I'll be honest. They could release a full fat Fifa on Switch and I wouldn't play it. I''m not that type of gamer. However, I can appreciate how disappointing this must be for folk.
Ok firstly “that’s some support”
Secondly - FIFA 19 was a VERY good football game on the switch and isn’t “a last gen game”
I’m all for hating but let’s actually get facts right. Fifa 19 is the best mobile football game ever made. (Maybe the competition is poor but it’s a very decent game)
I wish they’d update properly. I won’t be buying this unless I see it for a tenner. I bought 20 on a day one deal as it has Salford in it and 19 doesn’t and I wanted to do a Salford Career. Don’t regret the purchase at all. No need for me to pick this up.
It’s crazy for EA not to support the switch and the 7 game thing is not support. It won’t be seven big blockbusters. It won’t be the games we want.
They are lazy and greedy.
Hmmm wonder how many of the 7 games they will announce will be legacy versions of their sports titles
The Emperor’s new clothes. How inept. Surely EA are well aware of how people feel about their ‘Legacy’ editions, they just don’t care. Might aswell buy a Sharpie and change the year on your previous games’ box art. It requires a similar level of effort.
Their PR doesn't try to hide that it's FIFA 19 again.
In that case, I won't try to hide the fact I won't buy this. ☺️
Would it really have not been beneficial financially to put a small team on this to at least offer some small, bespoke improvements? Seems crazy given the user base of the Switch now.
Unprecedented levels of support from EA... 😂 Certainly going above and beyond..
"It's better than nothing."
(Mighty No. 9 trailer)
It's interesting the way a company is harshly criticized but doesn't seem to change a bit.
Wait! Does it mean people are still buying their Switch releases?????
I’m really disappointed with both FIFA 20, and now it seems FIFA 21. I find it purely annoying how they don’t add the new game modes on the Switch, and Switch only. An example of this is FIFA 20’s Volta Football. It was a brand new mode that the Switch didn’t get. And now it seems EA are doing the same with FIFA 21. For me, there’s no point on buying this new addition to the annual series.
Ea go go sit on a bottle of ketchup and ffffffffffffffffffffff themselves.
21 is the same game as 20 which is the same game as 19 which is using a modified 18 engine which is a modified 16 engine on other consoles.
What an absolute joke and slap in the face to Switch owners.
I’ve put more effort into this comment than EA has on updating Fifa for Switch...
Remember, guys.
EA = Wicked Step Mother (Lady Tremaine)
EA treats Sony and Microsoft as Anastasia (Playstation) and Drizella (Xbox) while treats Nintendo as Cinderella.
Nintendo needs a Fairy Godmother to break out from the mistreatment of EA.
Same thing happened with Vita versions. And the legacy versions predicted the end of Vita. Could this curse happen again, is the end of Switch upon us? 😀
People here mad like they even play FIFA
(I'm probably jinxing myself here)
Legacy Edition = we literally cannot be bothered.
@kalosn but that’s EA’s fault. They are making it seem like they can’t make a better game and they can. This is the same crap they pulled when they said frostbite couldn’t work with the wiiu when in reality they just didn’t want to put in the development time. Same here. If the Witcher 3 can run the way it does there’s no reason a studio with more money can’t do it. It’s not like they wouldn’t make any money off it, switch has a large chunk of market share.
If I could and had a way of keeping pop-cap, Then I would destroy ea
EA doing the bare minimum again
Were people really expected anything different seeing as EA hasn't even attempted to port their frostbite engine to be in anyway workable on switch? Also since Konami couldn't be bothered releasing PESon the system EA have literally had no competition and no incentive to try and make the game even close to anything more than the last gen games with an updated roster. Sports games sadly require the latest tech to stay relevant to most publishers.
It's not surprising. The Switch just doesn't have the online infrastructure required to fully support the game in all modes. More importantly it makes it much more difficult for EA to sell all the FIFA microtransactions.
@Anti-Matter Just a heads up, if you need to explain your analogy in detail, it's a bad analogy and a waste of time
You know EA just absolutely dreads the success of Nintendo devices. They have to restore power to dozens of offices, wake up hundreds of employees from their corporate induced comas, and have them attempt to make a game for a system they barely understand. Just let them sleep, man. Let them sleep.
One year EA will do a collaboration and plonk in a "Strikers" arcade mode featuring Mario & co to set it apart from the other legacy FIFA's.
Maybe nintendo should redo their own mario strikers game. it might look better than ea fifa on the switch.
Timo Werner at Chelsea and the new Wycombe Wanderers kits?
Essential day 1 purchase for me.
Super Soccer Blast and Kickmen are both out today. Both look more fun than fifa and will run you a combined ten quid.
I almost feel guilty for buying fifa 20, I didn't know about all this legacy business. It's the natural footie choice and price wise 20 wasn't expensive, so I just got that. It is a swizz though, I get why people are annoyed. Fifa needs some competition badly.
Then I can only hope it continues to underperform too.
@Strictlystyles Oh wait, yeah... Frostbite.
Now that you mention it, I wonder if they're bothering to bring at least one game like that to Switch as part of their 7 games.
I had hopes for them to bring at least 1 Frostbite game, since 70% of their games run on that engine. And it's not like if Frostbite couldn't run at all anyway, take a look at this gameplay on a smaller handheld: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8m_gfvdcGU
I'm actually feeling a bit different about this now. EA could not bother at all, and yes its just an updated version of FIFA18, but isn't that what FIFA has been for decades?
May not be a fan of FIFA, but it's better than nothing and gives promise of EAs commitment to the Switch, something that was lackluster on Wii U.
Really hope Madden makes the jump, was gutted it never got released out of US on Wii U.
Jesus I hate EA. If they can’t even be arsed with doing FIFA properly there is zero chance of seeing NHL or madden
Not worth buying at full price. I'll buy it if it goes 70-80% off for the kit. Meanwhile, Captain Tsubasa is coming out. Sweet.
When is Inazuma Eleven coming to Switch? That's probably the only soccer game I'm looking forward too.
What do you expect? Nintendo phones in their underpowered hardware so studios phone in their lackluster ports.
@ReaperExTenebris @Ambassador_Kong And yet, other companies manage to produce new games that look great, play great and sell great on the "underpowered console" every week.
Making a game from the same engine doesnt make it the same game.
See breath of the wild 2, same engine, same world but a sequel.
@sanderev because this year they'll get 0 from me but at 15 dlc? I'll pay that until fifa 25 haha
@ReaperExTenebris I don't know man, the system is weaker but nba 2k is on par with the other versions... soy vote goes to laziness
Are you f**king kidding me. EA really are the worst
