UK chart data is now in for the week ending 30th May, revealing that Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition has debuted at number one.
It's not often you see a single-platform JRPG at the top of the UK charts, but as you can see for yourself below, last week's Xenoblade rerelease has managed to do just that. It sits just above Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which had been comfortably placed at number one for several weeks beforehand.
Elsewhere, the majority of Nintendo's other evergreen titles find themselves below the top ten, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe taking a rare dip down to 12th.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:
Last Week | This Week | Title |
---|---|---|
- | 1 | Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition |
1 | 2 | Animal Crossing: New Horizons |
3 | 3 |
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare |
4 | 4 | Grand Theft Auto V |
5 | 5 | FIFA 20 |
- | 6 | Days Gone |
9 | 7 | Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order |
8 | 8 | Minecraft (Switch) |
- | 9 | The Last of Us: Remastered |
30 | 10 | PlayStation Worlds |

Wow that's unexpected. Is this because Switch owners have been starved for new releases or because the game really is loved that much? Either way it is an amazing result.
Even though sales don't really mean anything truthfully for how good or bad a game is, I do like seeing probably my favorite game ever in the number 1 spot. Followed by another game I really like in number 2.
And it's nice seeing a JRPG there as well. Even though I know it wont last.
Maybe this will be enough to convince Nintendo or a licensed 3rd party to makes some nice Xenoblade theme'd goods. I'd love a Melia and Fiora figure on my shelf. Or a nice Monado themed T-shirt.
@Ooccoo_Jr Because it's one of the best JRPGs ever made.
Wow! Well deserved! Fantastic game!
So glad this game is being played by more people
UK launch sales:
> Xenoblade Chronicles: ~7,000
> Xenoblade Chronicles 3D: ~1,000
> Xenoblade Chronicles X: ~10,000
> Xenoblade Chronicles 2: ~15,000
> Xenoblade Chronicles DE: ~14,000
With digital sales having increased by 3 - 4X since late 2017, it's safe to say that Xenoblade DE had biggest debut in series history.
I didn't know that series enjoyed any particular level of success, good for them I guess.
Awesome news! I'm no way near finished with the game yet, but hopefully this means they get the budget to throw in a few updates like they did with XC2.
While there isn't much competition going on right now, this just shows how much the Brits love this series and how well marketed it is for it to reach #1. For a JRPG that isn't Final Fantasy, it's rather unexpected given how niche they are in the grand scheme. And keep in mind, this is physical only. Digital probably has this propelled way higher than you think.
Can't wait to see JP and US sales numbers. This is easily going to be the best selling entry in the series and shows just how diverse Nintendo's catalog is. From the casual and cutesy Kirby and Mario to the more story driven Xenoblade and Fire Emblem. They're no slouch when it comes to providing many different experiences that are enjoyable by all.
Looks like they're really feeling it!
I guess Xenoblade and Animal Crossing shared the number one spot last week?
Either way, this is a good result!
Wonder what happened to MK8 Deluxe for it to drop out of the top 10? Too many people already own it or not enough Switch consoles on sale for people to add Mario Kart as their first game?
It's the only big new release on that board right now, everything else has been out for a while.
@syrupdash More to do with Sony having a big push at the moment, which is why the likes of PlayStation Worlds and Days Gone have resurfaced for the first time in ages.
@syrupdash
Stock issues most likely.
Xenoblade chronicles has been out for a while. It's actually kinda sad that the switch's biggest chart topper right now is a 10 year old Wii game. What was the last exclusive switch game that people got really excited about? I honestly can't recall. You know technically the switch doesn't even have it's own dedicated Zelda yet. BOTW is a Wii U game and Link's awakening is a spruced up Gameboy game.
@Zeldafan79 Wow, doctor negativity much!?
@Heavyarms55
No I'm doctor doom, and gloom!😜
@Zeldafan79 the answer to your question is literally at number 2 in the charts...
Wait... It sold fewer physical copies than XC2 at launch that debuted at #19 in the UK but somehow that is enough for #1 now?
Borderlands Handsome collection #18
Bioshock Collection #22
Old ports not published by Nintendo are so irrelevant that NL forgot to mention them 🙄
Well deserved, number 1 in the UK is great news for the franchise going forwards...
Let's just hope the title has legs worldwide... I'm hopeful.
@Zeldafan79
Short memory? Animal Crossing the 15 million and counting seller that came out in March.
What a strange comment.
@Zeldafan79 I sense a sense of humor. I can live with that.
@Zeldafan79 it doesn't matter, it answers your rather silly negative question. Also a game to thrill the masses, isnt Animal crossing doing just that? Why are you trolling.
@Zeldafan79 For people who do not play Animal Crossing like me. That would be 7 months ago Luigi mansion 3.
Or 6 months if you a pokemon fan.
@Agramonte
It's the fact that everything else sold less than Xenoblade Chronicles which is why it's #1. Don't forget that this doesn't include digital.
@Agramonte
Now that i can agree with! Great game! That should still be on the list instead of call of dookie.
So happy news and so many positive feelings here at the comments section. And then ... you have @Zeldafan79
@Ooccoo_Jr I'm thinking the former.
@Cosats
They just said "call of dookie" so they are clearly a child.
@Zeldafan79 Anything selling as many copies as Animal Crossing is, by definition, not "niche".
@TheFullAndy @Cosats
I'm the black cloud on an otherwise sunny day!
As for my call of dookie remark i take that back. It's call of
mediocrity. That better?
@JR150 Neither included digital. So that is a wash
Yes... everything on the top 10 listed there sold less than the #19 XC2. That again begs the question, just how many units do you actually need to claim #1 in the physical chart right now.
@Agramonte
Pretty sure more people are buying games digitally nowadays than three years ago. Especially given the current pandemic.
And who knows? Xenoblade's topped the sales charts for the first time in series history and that's what matters. It deserves it.
A fantastic result and well deserved.
I’ve been addicted since the game arrived on Friday.
But... But... It's not Full HD and full price, how can that be?!?!
@Agramonte
Do you not understand how charts work? Clearly not.
May/June is traditionally a slower time of year for game sales compared to November/December time when game sales are at their peak (When Xenoblade 2 came out) and therefore games can sell less but still chart higher.
I don't know what your problem is (actually I do you are a Sony troll) but the fact of the matter is last week Xenoblade DE sold more physical units than any other game.
Like it or lump it a lot of people wanted the game.
@Zeldafan79 Luigi Mansion 3 is a fantastic game. That it is not on the list is a travesty.
My next game is Paper Mario in July.
@JR150 Xenogears did really well too.
“Niche”
But....the pixels! The pixels!
@Zeldafan79 not everybody likes Pokemon or Zelda either, but one would be hard-pressed to call them niche. And ACNH sales certainly don't look much shabbier than theirs by now.
And this whole "old port" talk has never held water (no pun intended) in the first place. Just like "not everybody likes x or y", not everybody gets to play x or y when they're first/last released. For a multitude of factors - from the lack of time, budget or compatible hardware to the relative lack of interest that by no means nulls the wish to experience the game but dictates the purchase/backlog priorities. This is a big part of why ports, remasters and remakes keep happening - with the age proportionally fuelling the market because the interim can amass up to a whole generation (ot a few) who haven't come across them yet. And there is sheer excitement to be found among the "uninitiated". Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Langrisser 1 & 2, Rune Factory 4, Bioshock Collection have all been the year-making 2020 Switch releases in my book - and that's despite owning the latter two on other platforms! Ditto with XCDE here - dozens of hours of exploration, plot, grind and gathered loot invested into the 3DS port prior, and I have still bought and restarted the thing.
Like any portable console, and even moreso thanks to its hybrid versatility, Switch thrives on older games because it creates a perfect haven for the old and the new alike. It gets plenty of concurrent or quite recent releases (not to mention head starts on multiple games from new indies to ports like SR3) as well. And none of them will be liked by everyone, but they're all liked by tangible amounts of people. Including "niche" ones - gaming as a hobby is widespread enough for all these niches to be legitimate crowds.
Hell Yeah Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is an amazing game that deserves strong sales
But it immediately will drop in the charts once people see how the patch numbers are all 'wrong'
@AngelFox
To be fair this will be a very front loaded release and will drop quite fast and be much lower in next weeks charts.
It probably won't but I would not be shocked if it dropped out of the top 40 altogether. Just how it works with games in this genre.
@WiltonRoots It's fun to see the trolls pop up, complaining about stuff they have no interest in in the first place. 😆
Weird. This is the third time this game is released. I mean, I loved it both previous times, and I loved both "sequels" (still have the collector's editions of both XC and XCX, and of both the other big Wii rpg's, and the coins you could get for registering all three on Club Nintendo. Was a big collector back then, but I lost about 40 kg bodyweight and a ton of useless weight in games and game related stuff), and will love it again if and when I get it one day, used, or in the unlikely case Nintendo ever decently drops the retail price, as it is probably the best version of the game. But I'd have guessed almost everyone who was interested in the game had played it by now (maybe not in US, but "here" in Europe). But hey, good for them (both the players and the people behind the release), and well deserved.
Really surprised to see it go to number 1 in this country, very pleasing to see though, enjoying it immensely and the criticisms over resolution as always have been greatly exaggerated.
@Yosher no, the line means it wasn't on the chart last week
@Ooccoo_Jr Switch owners haven't been starved for new releases, and Xenoblade is one of the best JRPGs of the last decade. It had a limited release on Wii and used copies end up around the $100 range, it deserves this attention.
@Quarth Only here will being number one in a country not renowned for being Nintendo territory, with a game that's never done great numbers in the UK, not be good enough.
The weirdest thing is that seeing a Switch game at Number 1 in the U.K. doesn’t even surprise me anymore. Even one that’s an RPG and a remake of an old game. They’ve turned it around superbly well.
@Agramonte Travesty? Not so much. If Next Level Games reversed their anti-consumer approach and patched in an inverted y axis their sales would increase by the millions. As it stands though, it's been 7 months and many people cannot play a game they own, and many more won't buy it until it's patched. Keep in mind a patch for this wouldn't take much effort, but they did pump out two paid DLC packs despite their very vocal community bringing this severe anti-consumer issue to their attention.
@nhSnork
I keep saying stuff like this but the Port haters keep on moaning.
In every other form of entertainment-music, film, TV, literature-content is regularly Re-released and people enjoy their favourites more than once. Usually a lot more. Especially if technology allows better fidelity and/or more convenience. But some gamers seem to think Gaming should be different. One release on one format only and that’s your lot. It’s baffling.
£39.99 at Argos at the moment. Was the same price on Amazon but I think they've sold out.
@GoblinKing86
Hate to break it to you but Luigi's Mansion continues to sell very well. 13 in this weeks chart and I imagine it has broken all sales expectations of Nintendo and Next Level Games, over 6 million now I beleive.
I am not saying your issues aren't legitimate but you are dreaming if you think sales have been affected by it.
i am totally stunned how good this game is. i did. not expect that.
i can’t play anything else atm, after a hour or so i must go back to xc de.
i really would like to play more coop borderlands 2 because it is a really really great game and a fantastic port on switch but i cant play too long because of xenoblade de!
A Nintendo-exclusive JRPG top of the UK charts? Am I dreaming?
Very nice! So far playing this every chance I get. In love with the game!
I'm glad it seems to be doing well in the UK! Well deserved if impressions are anything to go by. I'll get to try the game out for myself before long. 😁
@WiltonRoots There's always something minor to complain about. But many of the moaners aren't here because they like Nintendo stuff.
I'm still waiting for my special edition to come all the way from Europe
@Agramonte "For people who do not play Animal Crossing or non-AAA games or games that are more than a month old like me."
Fixed that for you.
@Agramonte
Software sales in December are much, much, much higher that software sales in May.
Digital sales are also much, much higher now than they were back in late 2017, especially during the onset of the pandemic.
@Jedi_jem There was a 1 there before.
And Nintendo didn't want to localize Xenoblade Chronicles.
On a side note, who's the rich brat that keeps buying copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare just to keep sales numbers up, because I refuse to believe it's doing that well during a single week, least of all when it isn't even a new game.
@KayFiOS
8 out of 10 of the games in the top 10 were not released this year and are months/years old. Not sure why you are picking on CoD.
Edit: Also Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii was ported by Nintendo Europe to UK and elsewhere in Europe without any need for petition. You mean Nintendo of America.
@TheFullAndy I don't doubt these games sold well when they released, but why are these in the UK's weekly sales charts? I was skimming the article because I was about to head to work, saw CoD at #3 and went to comment right away. And CoD is probably not so overrated now that kids have a shiny new schūt gaem to play with Fortnite, so I'm... slightly less prejudiced against that game, and am more likely to play some online matches if I ever pick it up (now that I think about it, I might have gotten it on PS Plus for free...)
@KayFiOS
Because they all sold more than games outside the top 10?! I am not sure what you want to hear. People buy games because they want them.
Simple.
Again: it doesn't matter. Nintendo can even sell 10 millions of copies for all of their games, but this won't change that the online trolls will always be there to ruin the general reputation of the games. Nintendo had plenty of varied great games the last year, and I only heard words of hate against them, and on the opposite, sony had only Death Stranding, which got mixed reviews and sold relatively bad, and yet they got a lot of praise. Nintendo doesn't have a place in this world anymore, it's time for everyone to accept it... and I say it as a fan and like if a knife is stabbing my chest...
@BlackKnight93
Okey dokey......
@Agramonte I think comparing absolute numbers is meaningless. That was a holiday release in a strong economy. This is a May release in an unprecedented global economic crisis brought on by a global pandemic.
How many copies of GTAV do people need?
What's up with the downplaying?! 🙄 Xenoblade did great for what it is, a remaster of a niche JRPG.
@TheFullAndy "I am not sure what you want to hear"
Maybe a less condescending attitude? Christ. I guess I am not taking current conditions into account. More people are at home more people might be getting into gaming with the most popular titles, like GTA V. See, I can at least provide an actual theory why these games did well this week without being a prick.
@KayFiOS
Then why didn't you do that in the first place? Maybe read the whole article before commenting next time.
Anyway I give you the reason: People wanted the games so they bought them. Simple.
@Zeldafan79 Yeah but keep in mind, this is probably the widest audience the first game has ever seen.
The original came out in the twilight of the Wii's lifespan so many of those Wii Sports players had probably moved on (Not to mention it was an unknown new series) and even later in the US, the 3DS port required a New 3DS to play it on which lets be honest wasn't the handheld upgrade people were dying to grab, and the Wii U digital release.....was on Wii U.
Not to mention to Wii original held its price and not everyone was willing to go hunt down a full priced game on the used market years after the Wii bite the dust.
This new Remaster will sell way more not just from returning fans, but even if you know nothing about Xenoblade, chances are you recognize Shulk from a certain best selling fighting game of all time Smash Ultimate. With this game launching in the middle-ish of the Switch's life cycle, not requiring extra new hardware to play, and on a best selling system that still sells like the Switch, as well as players needing another really long game to play indoors, this game is finally going to do gangbuster numbers moreso than any other version and maybe more than the sequels.
Topple that with the fact that New players already have a sequel to try out once they complete XCDE right away if they haven't already and this just makes tons of business sense on Nintendo's/Monolith Soft's end.
@Agramonte XC2 did come out in December, a period when every game that year sells extra well as Xmas is coming up. 😉
@KryptoniteKrunch
Confirmation bias for self-validation. That's all it is for some people.
Is this a other game?
Pretty cool to see two Nintendo games at the top of the charts for a second week in a row. I wonder if we will see Mario Kart 8 and Luigis Mansion 3 re-emerge next week.
@Mark9
MK8 Deluxe you can practically guarantee. Any time it drops out of the top 10 it is usually because of stock issues.
Hopefully if sells remain strong Nintendo will invest a lot more money into Xenoblade 3.
@TheFullAndy
Guys I was kidding, I was kidding about the patch numbers!!! (Drowns in the thrown vegetals)
In all seriousness, I am all for updates and remasters. I actually see them the way studios remaster old films when new video technology comes out. It lets newer generations experience something they may have missed.
@AngelFox
I know you were bud I was just giving my take on how the game likely will drop big time next week.
Edit: I can already imagine everyone freaking out when it does drop big.
@RPGamer If you're referring to the comment I think you are, they suggested it was sad that a "ten year old Wii game" is the top of the list. That's all I really saw and why I suggested he was being overly negative - but let it go because he played along with my wordplay.
Looking at other comments though, it seems like something of a heated argument happened here.
@RPGamer Naw, I'm pretty sure I've seen him on the site around before and I don't really think he's a bad guy. Sometimes unrelated things can put people into an overly bad mood and bleed into other aspects of life.
And between global pandemics, mass protests and now even the military being sent in to restore order like some kind of dictatorship... there's enough negativity in the world right now that I wouldn't be surprised it a Demon Lord rose up. #onlyhalfjoking
I'm so glad this game is selling well. It's my all time favorite game.
Wow, just googled GTA V sales and it reached the 130 million milestone in May 2020. The 3rd top selling game of all time. It'll probably still sit in the top 5 until GTA VI releases, crazy how successful that one game has been.
@Westronic
Lol so true. The irony of that comment & all in retrospect.
@status-204
Apparently that wouldn't fit too well with the narrative or whatever that they're trying to push lol
@Yosher what?
@Jedi_jem you said the line means it wasn't on the chart last week. Instead of the line, there was a 1 there at first when I posted my first message.
UK is really feeling it, I see.
@Heavyarms55 A Melia Scale figure has been announced by Good Smile Company
@electrolite77
The part that I don't understand about these hypocrites & mental midgets is that they conveniently never have the same fervor when it others. You didn't & don't see them on sister sites complaining about tlou remastered, resogun remastered, seeing shadow of the colossus remakes or others. Also they don't seem to realize that if it's not exclusive that it's a port for whatever system it's on. Their selective whining is what is most annoying about some of these foos!
@KryptoniteKrunch
Haters? Trolls? Loser super Fanboys of other toy boxes & sad forever clowns that actually believe in console wars? Take your pick my friend.
@nhSnork Ah, so you approve of the Langrisser port. I have been reserving judgment after surveying reactions and trying the demo for myself.
@spideyroxas Oh neat. I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the FYI.
@Heavyarms55 Or convince Nintendo to give Monolith port the financial support to port Xenosaga and Xenoblade X.
