Remember last month how the Anime Expo 'Lite' livestream scheduled for July was teasing something related to Square Enix's action role-playing title, The World Ends With You? Well, as we probably should have guessed it appears to be for an anime.
Square Enix has launched an official Twitter account for the project along with a website featuring a countdown timer. The reveal of the anime will take place on Friday July 3 at 6PM PDT / Saturday July 4 at 10AM JST on Twitch and YouTube.
The studio animating this new project is expected to be announced at the show. While there's no mention of a panel, the anime companies Funimation, Crunchyroll, and Aniplex will all be present - so presumably one of them will be handling the reveal.
The World Ends With You first arrived on the DS in 2007 and was developed by Square Enix and Jupiter. In 2012, the game received an enhanced port for mobile devices, and in October 2018, The World Ends With You: Final Remix landed on Switch.

That's nice and all, but would love a sequel more.
@Kalmaro I would too but at the same time feel like they kinda missed their chance to make a perfect sequel on the 3DS while we still had two screens. Not to say that a new one with completely different gameplay couldn't be almost as good if done right.
One of the best RPGs on the DS - anyone who hasn't tried it please try to play the original.
An anime could be alright I guess.
Thank goodness Netflix ain’t involved! I hope we can get a sequel to the original that’s at least as good as the original.
Very very cool. I’ll definitely be watching this, the original is fantastic but I couldn’t get to grips with the iOS and Switch controls, they’re garbage. The art style will totally lend itself to an anime.
@BenAV They can tweak the story. Personally, I didn't miss the puck or other gimmicks at all when I played Final Remix on Switch's Tablet Mode (forget the pointer method).
Someone is calling!
I'll probably check the anime out, but I really wish they would release a new game. If there ever was a hidden gem among the DS catalogue, this would be one, at least to me. I still remember the first time I played it, and immersed myself in that world.
I'm surprised Square Enix doesn't just go full-on movie production, and ditch video games. Their games have just been wrappings for hours of cut scenes, lately.
An anime is ok and all, but game! Please! I’m sure we can think of some mechanic with the Switch.
I'm definitely excited for this, but I cant help but think how much is riding on the budget this series gets.
It helps that the art direction and soundtrack (and maybe VAs?) are already there, but how much more money they throw towards the project will make all the difference between spectacular scenes and sakuga-levels of choreography Vs. a more "economic" approach towards the animation.
YES... YES AND MORE YES!!!
How disappointing.
I just could not get into this game the controls were just not clicking for me.
But I'd absolutely watch an anime adaptation!
Interesting after the news about the Cyberpunk anime.
I'd watch an anime adaptation, but I'd love a sequel even more.
yes
YES
Y E S
yeah, I guess I'm kinda excited
I mean an anime series would be cool and all, but from what I've heard of Final Remix (pretty much just a ported mobile version), I can't help but feel sceptical. Maybe it's just the game they didn't put much effort in, but an anime's just not going to be the same...
Had hoped for an new game, but it better then nothing. Besides if it popular then it could lead to an sequel.
Doubt square will do an Konami if this. Anime becomes an success
I've been waiting for the game to have a good discount. At this point I don't think it will ever happen.
@nessisonett Couldn’t disagree more. The touchscreen controls for TWEWY are fantastic. It’s the best game I’ve ever played using a touchscreen - and one of the best games I’ve ever played, full stop.
Playing it without using the touchscreen (or a stylus), however? ...shudders...
Nearing the end of this game right now on Switch (TLoU2 pulled me away). Could make a pretty cool Anime show honestly if done right.
Very excited to watch this. Hope the English cast from the game returns, though I'll watch it in Japanese if its the only option
@TG16_IS_BAE Also, Naughty Dog.
@JimmySpades Right!
THE WORLD ENDS WITH YOU THE ANIME SERIES X DEFINITE EDITION SPONSORED BY NINTENDO
It could be a movie, just like when they did FFVII Advent Children
