One of the quirkier titles to come from today's Pokémon Presents live stream was Pokémon Smile, a brand new app for children to enjoy while brushing their teeth. Yes, you've read all of that correctly, and no, it isn't April Fools' Day.
The app hopes to provide "a fun toothbrushing experience" for children, giving them something to enjoy while looking after their teeth and hopefully helping parents in the process. You can see how it all works below.
The app is available as we speak on Android and iOS devices, so feel free to give it a cheeky download if you want to check it out for yourself. It's probably worth it just to look at the podgy Pokémon designs, if we're honest.
It might have been an odd way to kick off a presentation for serious fans of the franchise, but we dare say there will be plenty of kids out there who'll love this new app. Another "big" announcement has also been teased for next week.
But what do you think? Let us know in the comments.

How many kids are going to spit toothpaste and saliva all over the phone? 😂
Look forward to trying it later, might actually brush my teeth.
Now i can finally brush my teeth.
How about the people that don't have teeth? Way to be inclusive Nintendo!
I'm kidding. Nothing wrong with encouraging kids to grow up with good dental habits.
If it gets some kids to brush their teeth I guess its good.
Okay this is cute and all but why show this here? Who would have wanted this?
@fadedcolors Parents with children who are learning toothbrushing habits. I thought the trailer made that pretty clear.
As a parent, zero chance I'm allowing my kids to brush their teeth near any electronics. We use a simple 2 minute hour glass, and the kids like to brush their teeth while watching the sand fall.
This and New Pokemon Snap were the presentation's highlights, as far as I'm concerned.
@Octoguy I shudder to think what's happened to your teeth in all these years without Pokemon Smile.
Well, looks like the GRUSH has met its match.
It's a pretty fitting title. I was smiling as I was laughing at the absurdity of the reveal.
Will this even be available for download in the UK?
As a parent who uses Oral Bs Disney app I'm all for this. These apps are genius. My kid loved brushing her teeth now because she earns pictures of Elsa and Olaf while doing it.
As an educator... I do not like this title. Why do we have to continue to create apps that support extrinsic motivation. It doesn't help your child develop good habits in the long run. It's creating a dependency on needing external rewards for doing things.
@OveDue We tried using that app for our oldest when she was learning and for whatever reason, the idea of seeing a timer in digital form was anxiety-inducing. So we just went with an hourglass.
@fadedcolors
Pokemon's biggest audience is children, so this makes sense. They have made spelling, typing, and reading games before, why is this bad?
As a dentist, I think this is great. Purely intrinsic motivation is simply unrealistic for all young kids across the board. It's another tool to combat apathy and get them to practice good oral hygiene early and get excited about it. Disney already has an app like this that I talk about in my practice, and now I'll add this one to the table.
Rope jumping and toothbrushing have been game-ified! Next week... WARIO WIPES!
This is perfect! My toddler struggles with brushing his teeth. He can, he just loses focus. But if he had Charmander there to encourage him, I feel he would definitely improve.
@Muddy_4_Ever Mario can really put those plumbing skills to work then.
I may be nearing 23 years old, but I am shoddy when it comes to keeping up with brushing my teeth. Maybe Pokemon will trick me into doing better.
@WreckitRyan We use that app and it has worked wonders for motivating my kid to brush her teeth. Before, it was a real struggle, now it's the easiest thing in the world. Seeing as she doesn't use iPads or watches a lot of TV, I have no problem using it with her. She gets all excited and shows of her earned pictures. It's great.
@Samuel-Flutter Try Oral B's app collaboration with Disney. Your kid gets stars and medals for brushing and earns pictures he can look at afterwards.
I don't think I'll be needing this app, but those pokemon designs are adorable
@fadedcolors I wanted it. I watch these things to see weird new genres, not to see the obvious (the rpg). Weird new genres is the best thing about Nintendo and video games in general, I don't care if it's not aimed at me specifically, this is exactly the kind of news I want to hear from a Pokemon direct. Because some of us thought it was kind of cool, we shouldn't have to sit through a whole direct and get no information about their newest product. If they're not going to talk about weird stuff like that, I would stop watching these kinds of videos.
