Was anyone asking for this game on Switch though? I remember the first one came as a surprise after the Cuphead Switch release. If you can't surprise us anymore then don't.

That said I tried the demo of the original and it didn't really capture me. It looks pretty but that's about it for me. Maybe I'll get the original sometime when it's on a good sale but otherwise I'm probably not gonna bother with it.

@vio 2D only is one aspect the system is calculating. Effects and particles are the other. This game is loaded with effects and particles of which the paths and effect need to be calculated rapidly. So I can see 60 fps being a problem for that, since you need to calculate it 60 times a sec...

If it can only reach 30fps, but still feels responsive, I will still instantly buy it. Loved the first one.

Nobody cares how difficult it is. Just do your job.

I want it so much. I could buy it on my PC but for now I'm waiting hopefully for an eventual Switch port.

Great game. Not finished it yet, but what I did play was first class.

It also works great over Xcloud and they have it up for Free to preview testers (cross save with GamePass so you keep your save/progress).

They couldn’t even get the game running properly on an XBox One to begin with. This launch was a complete, buggy mess.

Too bad it took so long for them to deliver a patch, I finished the game before seeing it done. Great experience though.

Well given Xbox Game Studios games released after 2017 don't run that well on the less powerful XB1 models (original XB1 models and XB1S models), this is to be expected. More powerful mid gen refreshes (e.g. XB1X, PS4 Pro, New 3DS) are always problematic for owners of the original models if they don't upgrade.

I'd still prefer playing the game on the Switch though as Nintendo controllers always feel the best for any games involving platforming.

@Aurumonado It's a very graphically demanding game for a 2D platformer, it runs on Unity which is a 3D engine and the game is so much more graphical ambitious than the first game.
I am not saying it is impossible to do but it most certainly would be hard to do, the game is gorgeous.

It barely runs at 60fps on the base Xbox so yeah there would be some difficulty getting it ported.

Man i would love a port of it to Switch. But it's obviously difficult. I mean, obvious to me, i'm surprised that so many think that 2D means easy to port. Well, i still think the next Switch will have the new Ori - and Planet Coaster and Sims . (not that Sims wouldn't be possible right now but you know, it takes EA a while to come around as we've seen haha)

30 FPS and even some dips are a small price to pay to play this on the switch! Ori and the blind forest was the best Metroidvania I’ve played in a long time. I’ve never owned an Xbox and don’t intend to.

A steady frame rate is more important than a high frame rate that can't be maintained, because it's when frame rates fluctuate that you notice. If they can get get it locked even at a relatively low frame rate (not that 30FPS is "low") then it'll be fine.

@Agramonte Yup xcloud works 100% perfect for me and been playing Ori WooW last couple weeks. In my opinion this service is already better than switch and will be it's biggest competitor once mainstream.

Will of the Wisps is more graphically intensive, has some technical issues, and uses 3D models instead of sprites, so it doesn't surprise me that it's less likely to make the jump to Switch. I really hope it does, though.

@Yosher It gets a lot better after the demo/starting area if I'm being honest, given that the level design ramps up and takes advantage of the abilities you get throughout the game. It also gets a lot more difficult - I was wondering why Blind Forest had a reputation for being hard towards the beginning but I definitely get it now. Definitely worth it if you enjoy platformers and/or Metroidvanias.

I'd try an eventual Switch port of this game. I played through Ori and the Blind Forest earlier this year and thoroughly enjoyed it.

@Mfreddy22 XCloud is amazing and i love what MS is doing with it and Gamepass but it isn't going to compete with Switch, for one you can play the Switch anywhere, Switch is popular with families and kids, Switch is huge in Japan (something XCloud won't be) and the big one Switch has the Nintendo library, Animal Crossing NH alone is bigger then most other games out there for instance. Don't take this as me putting MS and XCloud down because i ain't but its market isn't the Switch one and even if it was the Switch would still be bigger.

But I´d understand if they don´t do it. We´ve got to be realistic with the Switch: it can´t move everything.

Any time a dev starts by saying "We love the Switch!" you know heartbreak and disappointment are just around the corner. It's the video game equivalent of "you're a really great guy, but..."

With that said, I like that the developer is straight-forward and has standards. They probably won't bother porting the game if it can't run well, and I appreciate them communicating that.

@Indielink Well it's not like the Switch can't handle ANY effects. Just tune the game down a bit so it looks like the first game on Switch. Nobody'd be complaining about that, Ori 1 looks great on Switch.

If switch can get DOOM ported then the developers are clearly lazy and not committed to the platform.

The game sold much better on the Switch than it did on Xbox. Face it, the Xbox, as powerful of a console as it is, is running in third right now behind Sony and Nintendo. There is more money to be made with Nintendo, especially as Microsoft shifts more and more to a subscription service model. I'm tired of game developers that keep putting games on this Microsoft Windows for your TV machine over the Switch. Ori fits the Switch like a glove.

@kingbk Yeah, I’m not sure why Microsoft dropped the ball this gen, perhaps it’s because they killed it with the Xbox360 so a drop back down is the most natural thing after a peak is hit. It’s so hard to predict what next gen is going to have going for it. Both the systems (PS5&NextBox) are absolute powerhouses, but will they have as fun and compelling games as the Switch? So far they both look promising, but I guess it will be a matter of which exclusives get the most attention? I don’t know! 🤷‍♂️

I guess I was just saying for people like me who want a portable option (where I have good wifi) along with playing on the big screen (using Samsung dex). While I agree you can't play anywhere, I can at least play portably in my house which there hasn't been another AAA option today besides switch. As an older gamer the Nintendo 1st party line up has been somewhat lost on me other than Zelda and (hopefully) Metroid, but I definitely get it's family appeal.

How many effects and particles are required for the game to actually be the game they intend it to be? Did you play the first one? Did you see the amazing light effects, movements of everything, wind effects, etc...?

If you want a platformer with 60 fps you can play dktf. But that’s not the same experience ori gives you, at all. One is an amazing platformer (dk tf, one of the best I’ve played). The other is a very good platformer with an amazing story and movie-like experience (ori, again, one of the best I’ve played ). Not the same and they don’t try to be.

I would love to play it on Switch . . . if it happens, that is. I know Microsoft needs their exclusives too, so whether or not it will come to Switch is unknown. You never know, though. There have been a lot of surprises in recent years.

The CrossSave feature with PC is also great. I can play Madden on the GO and then keep where I left off at Max setting when I am home on my PC

If Microsoft does full cross save support with Xcloud and Xbox Series X, it will give Sony/Nintendo a problem.

I honestly wouldn't mind a constantly stable 30fps, as long as we could get the sequel on switch. The original is one of my favorite games of all time now, but I have no interest in buying another xbox console ever again, so I'll take the sequel any way I can get.

Yeah, that is what I use it most for - not really a Switch substitute. It fills the gaps on the Switch schedule. I rather have dedicated handheld games... but 10X better than nothing.

Have you checked if GeForce NOW is where you live? They have a Free test version also. It has no games, you buy them on Steam. But you keep them as PC games (and your saves via Steam cloud) forever.

I am not big on Stadia, because they keep your games and Saves. But 100% on the idea in general.

@TeslaChippie 2 is built completely different from the first game. The first game uses almost all handpainted art but the second one uses 3D models for everything. To make it look like the first game would mean rebuilding the whole game.

I own all three current consoles so have an unbiased opinion. For 60fps the switch would struggle for sure... The sequel improves upon the original in every way, but it certainly requires the extra power to maintain its 60FPS.
That said, even at 30FPS the game would well and truly be worth playing still so I hope it comes to switch still. Its my game of 2020 so far so the more people that play it the better.

It doesn't need to be 60fps, solid 30 is fine. Really hope they bring over the sequel, played the original for the first time in Switch and it's a pretty great game.

No thanks to any 30fps 2D game. I'll just stick to my pc on this one.

I was actually thinking of buying my first xbox ever, seeing as what they’re doing with full backwards and forwards compatibility, gamepass, exclusives (finally). Granted, I still have to wait and see what their July presentation will be like, but so far I’m liking what I’m seeing with the Xbox series X.

@KoopaTheQuick I am sure you know more about developing for the switch over a development team who have actually developed for the system. Stop getting into Nintendo defence mode! If Xbox one suffered frame drops you can definitely see why the switch would be a big problem for 60fps.

If it happens, it'll happen a long time after Microsoft have sold as many copies as possible on Xbox hardware, like the original. I fear that Ori 1, Smash Banjo and Cuphead were just teasers to try and encourage Switch owners to consider Microsoft as their second/first console in the next gen, rather than what fans hoped for as the start of the floodgates opening. Hopefully I'm wrong and we get more Microsoft stuff like Rare Replay.

Dial back the special effects a bit then. The main limitation of the Switch is the 4gb of RAM, and Ori 2 is probably inefficient with this because of all the crisp special effects on screen.

The Switch is a system that has the possibility of a ten year lifecycle, however, as other platforms increase their processing power and system demands it will get harder and harder to get quality ports brought over. I'd take it at 30fps though. Gorgeous game.

I find both titles get considerably easier the further into the game you got.

In particular having a much longer life bar allowed for far more mistakes as you progress. Starting out environmental hazards like spikes pose a serious threat when they take away a high portion of your life and you have limited traversal abilities, where later on their impacts much lower (if not nullified completely in the case of some hazards) and your traversal options expand greatly.

The platforming etc does get more intricate later on, but rarely are you in a position where you can’t take repeated goes at something outside of those “chase” sequences each game has at points.

Not surprised. Even games like Dead Cells stutter when there are lots of enemies and explosions on the screen.

I spender twenty dollars of the first game with tax and I want to spend 30 dollars with tax for the second game on the switch

When we watch a movie at the cinema, it's 24 FPS and it looks great, so I'm perfectly fine with a videogame being 30 FPS. I'm not obsessed with stats for stats' sake.

@TheWingedAvenger Well.. actually.. not entirely true. Some movies are indeed still shot on film, which makes them 24 fps. However some digitally shot films are 48 fps (24 x 2), 60fps, or 120 fps.

@Collette Deadly Premonitions Origins is not even remotely representative of what the Switch is capable of. It is debatable whether the 360 or Switch version is best, but the Director's Cut on PC runs much worse than both on significantly more powerful hardware. It's generally a poorly optimised and often a badly programmed game, and I say that as a big fan.

@clvr When it comes to switch ports, 3 universal truths have been established in the various comments sections of this site...

(1) ALL games can be ported to switch with minimal loss of fidelity (even games with very high cpu and memory bandwidth requirements)... devs that can't do it are just lazy.
(2) Some devs (e.g. panic button), rather than relying on optimised code, sensible design compromises and choosing projects that scale well to the switch hardware, are 'Wizards' and use 'magic' to port games instead... devs that don't resort to the dark arts are just lazy.
(3) Doing a port of a game is easy and just requires a week or so to change the in game tutorial button graphics to match the switch, changing the gfx and resolution in the hidden game settings file to medium and then finally press the 'turn all this stuff into a switch game' button... any dev that releases a sub optimal port because the publisher / IP holder only gave them a limited budget / time frame that precluded the opportunity to spend effort optimising the game is just lazy.

All we need to do is sack all these lazy devs and every port will be running at a locked 60 fps with full HD gfx...

@Friendly It has nothing to do with their current model. I'm sure xbox ones work fine, and that the new series x will have it's merits to many, but I went through 3 xbox 360s in the past, and I refuse to give Microsoft anymore of my business. Also, I'm just not into the type of games they produce anymore. It's pretty much the same with Playstation for me now. I've gone from the ps1 up to ps4, and the types of games they deliver have appealed to me less and less over time, where I'm at the point of having zero interest in the ps5. Don't let that stop you from buying from Microsoft if you're interested. They just don't appeal to me personally anymore.

I am waiting for this sequel to come to Switch. They HAVE to do this, so many gamers want it on Nintendo portable. I would buy it for any price, even if it was around 60 USD. I am sure it can be done, but major optimization and lot of work is to be done.

The same people that say the Ori devs suck for not being able to run this game at 60 on Switch, are the ones that defend the way Xenoblade remaster looks on handheld to death. Lol, so ironic...

It's true that many movies are shot digitally at high frame rates, but they look like garbage when compared to real films. If you want to make a film, you have to shoot it on a real film camera. Real people and things look terrible on digital cameras. Digital is fine for representing designed assets, because they're not real - just the fruit of the artist's creativity. The artist decides what it looks like, and can take into account the digital medium. But real life requires film to look right.

I’m sure with a few cut backs, and clever programming this could run on switch. If it’s a solid 30fps then so be it, I’m not one for chasing frame rates.

I say just give them time. Ori and the Blind Forest was out for a few years before coming to Switch, which gave them time to improve the game.

After a few years, their exclusive contract should expire and they will be free to port it. By that time, they should have optimized the Xbox version enough with patches to realize how they can adjust the game to work on Switch. (That is what I hope for anyway!)

@vio I have to laugh when I hear this type of drivel. Are you a dev? Ori 2 pushes Unity much, much father than the original. All of the characters are now polygonal (they were sprites in the first one). There is so much overdraw and alpha in the backgrounds it's a wonder Durango can hit 60fps at all.

As long as it looks and flows as good as the original on Switch, I am happy. I know there where some troubles with the sequel when it originally arrived, but I guess its fixed now. It can't be impossible to bring the game to Switch, not with some effort behind it. The first one was great, I would love the sequel too.

Yes I'm well aware of the xbox performance I used to own one. And regardless of what you think you know. The switch is a capable piece of kit, therefore I think it's more than possible to get Ori 2 running really well on it.

I'm not sure if this is true but I hear that Microsoft won't work with Nintendo anymore because the relationship was a bit of a one way street with Nintendo getting Microsoft exclusives and Microsoft getting nothing in return.

Not sure if any of that is true but I wouldn't be surprised if it is, Nintendo are known for rubbing other big businesses up the wrong way.

To be honest Nintendo fans are quite bad too, most vocally protest against the idea of Nintendo exclusives going the other way...

But they have no problem getting them from Microsoft, in fact, as proven here...

They'll port beg for other developers exclusives while not willing to give any of their own away. So many Nintendo fans, particularly the Switch breed, are filled with so many two faced double standards nerds who hurt the fanbase more than anything else.

I find amusing that so many people think this is doable, and will run great at 60fps on the switch. It's probably only the developers who are lazy. Ori is a very detailed and demanding game, and there's no way around the fact that the Switch has much less muscle than other systems.

I still remember how R-Type and Rainbow Islands on the Spectrum blew everyone's mind, and no one asked why it looked so much worse than the Arcade originals or the Amiga conversions.

@TG16_IS_BAE no, ram isn't for multitasking alone. It's the space the system needs to access assets quickly. Any assets, like models, particles, art, or the numbers being crunched for lighting and shadows go in there.

If the system needs something to draw the next game that isn't in ram? The frame gets delayed until it can be loaded from the game cart or system storage. Both are relatively slow, so frame drops. The more ram you have the less frequently you have to resort to loading from storage.

@Zuken I always thought that the calculations that you are referencing were crunched by the CPU? I have a vague understanding of computers, not trying to be argumentative just seeking to understand better.

@TG16_IS_BAE crunched by the CPU, that's correct, and the results stored in RAM. For later reference. But collectively that takes up very little RAM, textures and models take up a lot though.

If you don't have room for something you have to unload older stuff, read the new stuff and load it into RAM before it can be used. If a frame is waiting on the stuff, that can impactframe rates.

If you happen to have the PC version of FFXV you can turn on the fps UI and it will show you RAM usage, there's another option that let's you decide how aggressively it loads assets into memory, if you play with this you can see when the game is loading and unloading things and how it correlates to stutter. It's pretty neat. Depending on your hardware (especially RAM size and what you're using for disk) you'll see it stutter whenever the ram numbers start going crazy because something new had to be drawn on the screen and hadn't been loaded.

Oh, and in PCs graphics cards will have their own RAM for storing textures, but the switch doesn't really have that because the it uses an integrated tegra chip, so it's graphics and system memory share space on that 4gb of ram.

Because of that, games that are ported from beefier systems have to be aggressively reworked to make up the difference. If they were already doing a good job then there may not be any way to pick up the slack. I couldn't tell you how well this game handled it before, but if it's very ram dependant, the switch would be problematic. Even phones these days have more ram than the switch.

@Ultrasmiles this is an over simplification, there would be work to be done to change it to run well. This costs money. Then they have to weigh up that effort vs financial gain from trying to make it work.
