Banjo Kazooie

We don't normally celebrate Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter anniversaries, but we'll make an exception for the former Nintendo 64 mascot Banjo-Kazooie, as Rare has issued a timely reminder via its official Twitter account.

Yep, this time last year we couldn't believe it when the bear and bird were announced for the ultimate entry in the Smash series. At the time, Masahiro Sakurai even told fans to go and check out the original Banjo-Kazooie game on Xbox One.

Surprisingly, Microsoft had no problem with the character appearing in Smash Bros - with the Head of Xbox Phil Spencer explaining how the company already maintained "great relationships" with Nintendo's third-party team.

Banjo Kazooie's composer Grant Kirkhope described it as one of the "biggest" moments of his career when his music was featured in the character's reveal trailer. He also composed the music for the Spiral Mountain stage.
