Update #2: Sega has confirmed that Thunder Force AC will launch in North America and Europe on May 28th – not long to wait! It will cost $7.99 in America. Will you be downloading it, or have you already purchased the Japanese version?
Update #1 [Mon 11th May, 2020 09:00 BST]: Sega has confirmed that Thunder Force AC will launch this week (14th May) in Japan, costing 999 yen. There's no word on when the western release is going to take a place – they usually follow shortly afterwards – but you can always use our guide on how to purchase games from Japan if you can't wait.
Original Story [Thu 16th Apr, 2020 09:30 BST]: Sega has announced that Thunder Force AC will be coming to the Switch as part of its Sega Ages range soon, and will cost 999 yen in Japan.
Based on the Mega Drive / Genesis title Thunder Force III, Thunder Force AC was released in arcades around the same time and was ported to the SNES in the form of Thunder Spirits – which sadly wasn't much good.
As was the case with Thunder Force IV, a Kids mode is included which not only grants you higher attack power but also prevents you from losing all of your weapons upon death. Online leaderboards will also make the cut, and you'll be given one for each of the four playable ships in the game: Fire Leo-03 Styx, Fire Leo-03MP Styx Mass Product, Fire Leo-04 Rynex (from Thunder Force IV) and Fire Leo-o4 Rynex (equipped with Thunder Sword).
Naturally, the port will benefit from the usual Sega Ages features, such as the ability to save your position in the game, record replays of your performance and also watch footage of advanced players. The original arcade game had mono sound, but this has been upgraded to stereo in this version, and HD Rumble has been added, too. A range of screen filters are present so you can obtain that faithful CRT-style look if you so desire.

Looking forward to this game. Thunder FOrce III is one of my favorite Schmups, and this version isn't too bad either.
Thunder force 3 and hellfire were the games I got with my megadrive still have them today and still play them I actually always preferred TF 3 to TF 4 but 4 always seems to get better reviews Thunderspirits is awful not sure how they managed to mess it up so bad but the screen shots have me worried cos it looks more like spirits than TF 3
Never played Thunderforce III. That's the opportunity !
Great to see the Sega Ages collection expanding to new titles
Looking forward to this.
Probably will play in Kids Mode though. Whilst I don’t mind a partial weapon downgrade when you loose a life to loose all weapons and in some cases speed ups when shot down, in later levels you may as well restart as it’ll be almost impossible to progress any further.
Awesome news! Please announce more games for the series SEGA! The more the merrier I say
Great, any other Sega Ages games on the way apart from this and G-Loc?
Thunderforce III, the only shmup I’ve ever completed!
Oh come on sega! Get to the decent stuff!
Almost forgot about the SEGA AGES stuff, I wish they would hurry with bringing the ones Japan already has over here, I don't see why we should have to wait/import it off the Japan eshop when it's already been translated, heck most of these games are just ports from the 3DS 3D Classics rather then full new games, or at least aim big with the next releases I mean while these are nice I much rather any of the Model 2 arcade games to be ported over like the ones Xbox 360/One has from their past efforts
Thunderforce II and III blew me away when I first played them on the Genny!!! Waiting patiently for G-Loc and now this! After these 2....what’s next Sega and speed it up a little huh??
Still one of the greatest schmups of all time. Nobody did music for the genre better than Technosoft back in the day, and those visuals were cutting edge then and still hold up.
Oh yes!!! amazing news, I have this on Mame just doesn’t feel right. Hopefully now a decent conversion:)

What ya talking about, Thunder Spirits was a fantastic game simply for the fact that it wasn't a lazy carbon copy of Thunder Force III.
Do you think we might get the original Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version of Thunder Force III? Also it would be cool to see if we can get Thunder Force II and Thunder Force V as well.
@LaytonPuzzle27
Thunder force 4 already on switch mate.
@Axelay71 I know that I was talking about Thunder Force II, III, and V.
@gdog yeah I still play it from time to time one of the megadrives finest tough but fair
Love the ending theme from Thunder force iii. How they coax that out of Genesis/MD sound chip is beyond me...
@FX102A It will be Kids mode for me. Like you said, in games like this once you die and lose all your power ups you might as well switch it off.
I think that's one of the reasons I really get on well with Axelay as it gives you all your power-ups back after dying instead of taking them away! 😅
Yep looking forward to this loved 4 x x x x x x x
Can't believe they're finally doing a Thunder Force crossover event with Animal Crossing!
This was announced in 2018... what’s going on at Sega? Is M2 being stretched thin? How does an emulator take 2 years to come out? Hobbyists with little resources can develop FPGA hardware in less time...
So I like Sega and I think their partnership with Nintendo has always been a healthy one but I can't bring myself to buy ANYTHING they put on the Switch because it's all akin to shovelware.
Maybe this might be good. Have to wait and see.
@BulkSlash Or at least either a partial downgrade (I.e. Super Aleste) or the ability to pick up some power ups soon after dying (Psikyo Shm’ups).
Ironically I used to power my way through games like this as a kid, but kids mode is going to be a life saver now that I'm old and grey.
Nobody did schmups better than Technosoft back in the day, and the soundtracks for the ThunderForce series in particular are INCREDIBLE. I think it was Stage 5 of TF II that still blows me away even now. TF III and TF IV (known as Lightening Force here in the States) continued and expanded on that formula of bleeding edge (at the time, but still beautiful) parallax-scrolling levels and pulse-pounding music.
This is cool, but what I really want is for Streets of Rage 2 to get the Sega Ages treatment!
Awesome probaly will give this a shot
Day one, have all the Thunder Force games including 6 on ps2. This will be great for switch:)
The lack of a new announcement for months concerns me. Only Herzog Zwei is left on the release calendar after this.
Sorry but without the HAIDES stage and its best music ever for me, it's really too bad !
I'd rather have a port of Thunder Force III instead !
Day 1!! Another Genesis game that blew my doors off when I first played it!! So WHATS NEXT SEGA?!?
@LaytonPuzzle27 well we got the original Genesis Columns with Columns II so let’s hope they included the Genesis version again. 😊
I'm glad i recently added funds to my JP eShop account (to get Gals Fighters after it was taken down from the EU eShop), i certainly won't wait a month for the localization of a game that does not really require any localization.
@Razer Are... are you saying that Thunder ("Lightening") Force IV and Sonic Mania are shovelware?
Nice, Sega Ages are among the highest quality releases, they even mod the games sometimes to play better.
@gurtifus Damn... You are right! That music is fantastic! Especially the section 50 seconds into the track.
@Gs69 Oh yeah, Hellfire. Really want to play it now. I know someone else said it earlier but yeah that music is great.
Am ready for some more schmup action
Someone mention Slifer the Sky Dragon?
nope?
Wrong comments section.
The article doesn't mention it, but does the Japanese version have a Language Select feature for the menus? That could well determine whether I wait for the English/Western release.
Were AC is Accelerated in this case
Day one down load
looks so nostalgic, this is a fun shmup, I'm excited
Will pick this up for sure, lover the Thunderforce series.
With only 1 Ages game left to be release after this, Surely, we must be close the next Ages games to be Announced ?
@FX102A I am all for a mode like this, just a shame they called it "kids" mode lol.
Hunger made them desperate
