Dark Knight And Inception Director Shows Off Trailer For His Next Film In Fortnite

Fortnite is the next best thing to going to the cinema. You heard it here first boys.

@Damo FYI the trailer apparently includes a tease that a full Nolan movie is going to be shown in Fortnite at some point this summer as well. There’s no indication of which Nolan movie yet - although the best guess seems to be a Batman movie since his skin is already in Fortnite (source: Eurogamer - although I suppose you can also validate it by watching the trailer in game as well, which I haven’t yet done myself).

Not a big fan of Nolan's output as a director. For me, the way too grandiose and self-important tone of his movies tends to overshadow the genuinely good moments and ideas you can find in most of them. The ones where I feel he found the right balance between his ambition and what he actually achieved, are 'The prestige' and 'The dark knight'.

Looks like Nolan has made another must see movie.

Iove his films and the fact he is proud to use heavily English casts - especially Caine. He also saved Bale from binning his career ditto Hardy. Fortnite, however, is s hite..

While not everybody will be a fan Nolan's movie output is pretty strong imho, looking forward to the new one, and I do like this statement at the beginning of Kenneth Brown's "Inception" review on Blu-ray.com, sums up my thoughts exactly.

"There is a small, militant camp of malcontents who despise everything Christopher Nolan has ever committed to film, and their numbers only seem to grow as countless critics and the movie-going masses at large declare him to be one of modern cinema's greatest visionaries. They see Memento as pretentious, arthouse drivel; Batman Begins as a serviceable but unspectacular foray into comicbook adaptations; Insomnia as bland and uneventful; The Prestige as an over-scripted mess with three twists too many; and The Dark Knight as an overblown, over-hyped cash-in that doesn't deserve the accolades it's received. It's easy to call directors out for being lazy, and showing no real ambition, Nolan imho is what the industry needed, and his movies take risks, which thus far have all paid off.

@Kochambra the only film from nolan that is not a masterpiece is Insomnia. other than that he shows every time why he is the best filmmaker alive. no competition.

Finally, a reason to play Fortnite!

You have to remember that at the beginning of their career directors rarely get to choose their projects, look at one of the other great modern director David Fincher, you can forgive him his initial work on "Alien 3", when you see his later output, and to be honest "Insomnia" is a great little movie, and you can already see his little touches within it.

@johnvboy I'm not saying Insomnia is bad, but its nowhere near Memento for example, which was made earlier. Insomnia is a good thriller. thats it. nothing special about it in my opinion.

I like Memento it's a very good movie, I guess I like Insomnia far more than I thought I would, and it's a little favorite of mine being a big Pacino and Williams fan, I have watched it many times and there are touches, but of course it's tough when you have movies like Inception to compare it to.

I wish they re-shoot the scene in Dark Knight Rises with Bane getting taken out quickly from Catwoman. He deserved a more grand exit. This movie looks excellent though.

Cool, Nolan hasn't made a single bad film.

In theatres?! There’s absolutely no guarantee of that, unfortunately.

I love Nolan but I wish he’d chop off about 20% of his ideas from his films. They’re often a bit too overstuffed with characters having to over-explain stuff. Still a great director though.

So, according to this Kenneth Brown guy, you either agree that he's a master filmaker or you hate everything he directs? Wow, what a sheer fallacy!
You see, that's one the worst part of fandom: For some fans, you either share their adoration for their beloved actor/director/writer/musician or you're an outright hater who uses this person's picture as a dart board. They apparently can't conceive any middle ground between those two extremes.
Personally, I could use adjectives like "self-important" and "superficial" when speaking about Inception. I could also say that I find its depiction of dreams surprisingly unimaginative. That doesn't mean that I hate it; I think it's a good movie, but far from a great one.
The Prestige, on the other hand, is a movie where i think that the combination of Nolan's particular talents and the story he is telling, blend together to produce a genuine great movie. Sure, you could call it "convoluted", but that's part of its point.
So no, I don't hate Nolan. I just hope he does more movies like The Prestige and less movies like Inception.
And I agree with you: We need more ambitious directors like Nolan, Fincher, Wright or Haynes.

@6ch6ris6 Oh, I think he has plenty of competition for that title. But to each his own.

On the subject of how people feel about Nolan and his work or any director for that matter, it ultimately comes down to taste and preferences. I think he's a fine director. I don't care for everything he's done. But that isn't necessarily a commentary on his filmmaking ability in general.

Oh lord I hate Nolan’s movies, the only one I can stick is Memento. Him showing off his movie in Fortnite just reinforces my belief that all his talent dried up many years ago.

Kenneth said there was a small amount of people who felt that way, did you not read the quote?, my post was not directed at you on a personal level, the mass majority seem Nolan as a very good director, but I Kenneth was getting at the fact there will always a small minority of people that will be determined not to like something that's popular, movie reviews are a perfect case in point, get a top reviewed movie and there will always be a few rouge reviews that state all the others are wrong, it does make sense as another glowing review in a sea of them will not stand out, perfect way for the critic to gain a few clicks and some attention.

That does not mean they are no good, it just means you do not like them personally, I love them as many others do, he and David fincher are two of the best working in Hollywood right now.

The man sure does know how to make a good stoner flick. Although, some of my favourite Nolan pictures were written with his brother Jonathan (Memento, the Batman’s, Interstellar), who brought us the fabulous Westworld on HBO. Now I wonder how much of the DNA of those films is actually the brother. That show kind of combines the non-linearity of Memento with the brain-bending scifi of Interstellar. Good stuff.

Interstellar is a very good movie that tends to get overlooked in these discussions, and nobody would ever suggest it's all the directors vision up there on the screen.

Of course I read the quote; he presents it as an either-or situation: Either you're one of those "disgruntled few" who "despise everything Christopher Nolan has ever committed to film" or you're one of the "countless critics and the movie-going masses at large" that "declare him to be one of modern cinema's greatest visionaries". And like a I said, that's a fallacy. I don't think he's one of cinema's greatest directors but I don't despise any of his movies either.
But going to your point: "there will always a small minority of people that will be determined not to like something that's popular". Well, that could be true in some cases, but I think that making a general statement like "the reason why some people don't like X is because it's popular" is unfair and in most cases downright false. That's like denying the possibility that people with different opinions may have their own reasons, as equally valid as ours.
Let's take 'The prestige', for example. Like I said , I think it's a great movie where Nolan's style works really well for the story. But I can see how some viewers might find it too convoluted, or too cold, or too unbelievable. Or some might even find faults that I just can't see. That doesn't mean that those faults aren't there for them, or that they dislike the movie just to be contrarians or to gain clicks or whatever.
Even if a movie has a 94% approval rating on rotten tomatoes, such as The Dark Knight, most of that 6% of critics who don't quite like the movie probably have their own legitimate reasons for having that opinion.

I'm a huge Nolan fan and advertising in Fortnite makes sense but I gotta admit, it sounds odd that it's come to this. I hope Tenet is amazing, most of Nolan's movies are. I didn't love Dunkirk however.

@Kochambra Yeah I agree with you there. It doesn’t seem like Nolan’s characters exist beyond the pages of the screenplay, or outside of whatever philosophical point he is trying to get across. I suppose stiff characters are fine for genre films, but the realistic look he goes for give the movies an unnecessary feeling of self-importance. He’s a good technician, but a bit too rigid in his delivery.

I do think there is a lot of authenticity to his style though. Dunkirk definitely made you feel like you were a soldier on the beach, but I don’t think I’d ever watch it again.

I have very fond memories of Nolan movies growing up; I believe I've seen all of them and would consider myself a fan. It really is strange to think about how I haven't gone to a movie theatre in 3+ years. It's even stranger to see one of Nolan's premiere movies featured in Fortnite.

You are reading far too much into it, mainly because you feel it undermines your views, which of course it does not, the main point Kenneth was trying to get across is there are people out there that do not like anything Nolan has put to film, and all he is stating is he is not one of them.

My whole point was not to state you are wrong in your dislike for certain Nolan movies, and you do fall in the middle where you like certain Nolan movies, the Prestige is a very good movie, and from the opening line "Are you watching closely", is a truly awesome movie, where you feel you have been on a real journey with both magicians.

I get that and you've been very respectful to my opinion. My objection to the review you quote is how it creates a fake dichotomy (you're either among the masses who revere Nolan or you're one of the few contrarians).
Maybe my problem is that I'm seeing way too much of this artificial polarization lately: People draw a line in the sand and expect you to choose one of two sides. And when you choose a side, everyone in that side has to agree that we chose the right side, and that the people who chose the other side didn't choose it for genuine reasons; they just chose it to be contrarians/to be popular/to get more clicks/because they expect to make money out of it/because they have been deceived/because they don't know any better/because they're idiots. It seems like we're turning everything into a battlefield where there only exists right (our side) and wrong (their side), without any middle ground.
Anyway, that's where I was coming from. Excuse my rambling.
Thank you for the conversation and for sharing your opinions on Nolan's movies. When I posted my first message in this thread, I was hoping more people would share their points of view about them, because I love talking about movies (even in a gaming website).

You are reading it wrong then, he stated there are a small minority of people like that, he never said there was no middle ground, or that people like himself loved the Nolan movies, to state there are not people out there that fall into the first group is wrong, but in all fairness he never even said the group that did not like anything were wrong.

Thanks Nintendo Life, for reminding me why I have a MASSIVE dislike for stupid games such as Fortnite, and the type of communities they attract. Save for a relatively small handful of normal people, it consists of 99% of annoying juveniles who can't even be serious or sit still for the duration of a f-ing movie trailer.

I seriously wanted to beat the crap out of that idiot with the bow and plunger, who apparently thought it was funny to shoot at the movie screen the whole time.

But.....in Nolan's case...his filmgrain comes off as pompous. And I think you expect to get as much out by the end as the cognitive energy you spent to suspend disbelief and try to inundate with their models of rationality. But by the end, he five you a big middle finger, that the view er can only conclude means he considers his art higher than your ability to percieved any way. So that entire intellectual flea circus you witnessed wasn't for you, it was for the filmmaker. And the lack of let's call it screen apathy, comes through so staunchly in his films, I think viewers generally feel a sense of the inhuman in his character and the interaction they had. The communication, although it pretends to involve you, is entirely one sided, and by the end you realize it was so one sided, no one ever intended to feed your mind as well. For example, interstellar. That's it

Interstellar speaks for itself, as it trudges it's herded movie goers to an end so incomprehensible, it's attempt to loop its cause with it's effects, creates a deveststing plot whole, the view er feels betrayed in spending their time seeing to conclusion. You never realized the entire movie had been softly disclosing that blow, so that by the end the plot whole may just be brushed by as some constant, an effect of all you have witnessed. And they all do this. Explain explain explain just to create a plot whole, that will describe a thinly laid constant they used for a proof to base the entire movies logic and structure on. And you get the blah effect from viewers. The third Batman movie for instance, my gf and our intermixed friend groups went cosplay to the theater, before the shootings, like a day before (and we may have done a slight reinactment of the intro joker resturaunt scene from the original, in which we declared we had a bomb, held up the speaker box, and started playing prince instead, yeaaaahhh, we did that, and it mostly went well). So it was a dressed up group of fuggly costumed guys (had 80s thug on lock w the redick over leathered black jacket w mc hammer arm apolstry patterned designs and shoulder pads) and pretty sexy Batman attired girls, even met a couple weirdos also dressed up joined forces to take the row, and....almost the entire original costumed party fall asleep several times. I woke up, saw Batman still in the damn whole, and went back to sleep. Decent finale, but no real love for it's viewers. Not the same love we had.

And yes, MMO's like Fortnite are definitely not the next best thing since sliced bread. As mentioned in my initial comment, I dislike the audience it attracts, or at least: the majority of it. I don't want to put ALL Fortnite players on the same heap, because I'm sure there's actually some sane and/or adult people in there, but most of them will be kids, which definitely explains the juvenile behavior during events like these.

Yeah it's a Miller, and it's pulpy, yet flashy and bombastic stylized portrayal of violence. I mean my god Joker. The sadism, sexual violence, and brutal action, are real enough, with just the right pinch of sensationalist pulp style, for Tarantino to do. Maybe Rodriguez in a Sin City rehash aesthetic but that wouldn't be fresh.

Oh yeah mostly sarcastic. But lol the idea of fortnite idiots ruining things for other, non-idiotic fortniters, brings a warm half a smile to face.

It SOUNDS nice, but as I was watching this video of the reveal of the worldwide premier of the Tenent movie trailer inside Fortnite, all I could think of was "I want to strangle that bow & plunger guy", big time...
