Stardew Valley might only be available from the Switch eShop locally, but over in Japan, you can buy a physical copy of the game on Nintendo's hybrid system. This version was released last January. So where's our own hard-copy of the popular farming and lifestyle simulator?
According to the game's created Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone, there's a good chance of it one day being released in physical form here in the west. Here's the full exchange Eric had with a fan on Twitter:
While a local physical release on Switch has been highly requested for some time now, if it was distributed, it would no doubt require patches (just like the Japanese release), as Barone is still releasing regular updates for the game.
Just last week, for example, it was revealed banana trees would be added in the game's next update (Version 1.5). If you're eager to get your hands on the game card, though, it's worth pointing out the Japanese version includes English language support. Have you been holding out for a physical copy of Stardew Valley? Leave a comment down below.

I don't really see the point of getting games that are rather small downloads like this in physical form, especially since the price tends to get jacked way up, but some people seem to be all about getting everything like that.
About a year ago, I asked around for confirmation if the Japanese version's multiplayer is compatible with the Western release, but no one has been able to confirm that. In theory, since all content is the same, it should be compatible, but you never know.
Bring it on, let's do this. You have an awesome game and people want to buy it.
A physical release with a map would make a nice one for the collection. The only way to go is handheld for this game, so it would’ve been nice if it had come sooner.
The PS4 and Xbox getting a physical release but not the Switch is a bit strange.
I would buy it day one.
@Wilforce : There appears to only be ONE build of the Nintendo Switch version released internationally (which includes Japanese, Chinese, English, and the European languages), so there shouldn't be any difference whatsoever between the Japanese and Western releases. Multiplayer may be locked on the basis of language (but I could be wrong there), but not on the basis of the cartridge as there appears to be only one version worldwide.
Cartridges don't region-lock multiplayer unless the game itself is of a different build (for example, the Japanese version of Splatoon 2 only supports Japanese and is a separate build, for all intents and purposes, from the Western release; for example, if you were to own both versions of Splatoon 2, they would spawn two separate icons on your home menu and each have their own separate save data; this should not be the case with Stardew Valley if you were to own both the Japanese cartridge and a hypothetical Western cartridge).
Whether or not multiplayer is locked on the basis of the nominated nation of one's NNID is another story, and that I cannot verify either (and this may vary from game to game).
Way too late. Many people already owns it in digital form. As usual, the ones that come late will get the prize.
Hope it gets a physical release! Heard a lot of great things about this game.
@Liam_Doolan "According to the game's created Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone..."
Shouldn't it be "creator"?
Yes I had been wanting a physical cartridge version of this one for a long time now. Make it happen.
WAYYYYYY too late. I like the game but I won't be double dipping
I got the game 2 years ago and wasted on ton of hours in it, physical release by now doesn't make much sense to me and I prefer them so that says something.
Why buy Diet Animal Crossing when we have the real thing now?
@DinnerAndWine
Because this isn't Animal Crossing, in the same way that Harvest Moon never was.
I purposely held back years from the digital purchase for this day to arrive. Finally hearing back from the creator on the possibility is a glimmer of hope my patience paid off.
For those of us with multiple consoles a physical copy would be great!
