Famitsu's Japanese chart figures are now in for 30th March - 5th April, revealing that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is still having a wonderful time at the top.
The game sold an estimated 423,367 copies in the region last week, taking its Japanese physical sales total to just over 3 million. Amazingly, this means that - after just three weeks on sale - New Horizons has already surpassed the lifetime physical sales total achieved by Switch's evergreen giant Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in the country.
Animal Crossing's third-week success also keeps it at number one in the weekly chart, comfortably holding off PS4's big release this week, Resident Evil 3.

In terms of hardware, Switch didn't manage to have quite as successful a week as last time around, but the original model and Switch Lite's combined total of 154,000 sales is nothing to scoff at. Here are this week's figures, followed by lifetime sales in brackets:

Wait, what? Already? Well there's 3 physical copies in our house. My daughter bought a Switch & AC on the AC release date. If a good amount of people did that, Switch sales then went up as well.
@Joe-b Same, but we went digital - three copies (two daughters in college that also bought Switch Lites).
@Tandy255 yah, that's crazy. My son got a Switch in 2017, I got mine last July, my daughter when animal crossing came out. Funny though, no one wants dad to visit only their friends! Well, I may get to visit but it's a short visit!
Ouch, those Resident Evil 3 sales are horriable. Animal Crossing is insane at sales, best game ever made.

Shocking to me that my favorite series since gamecube is now going to be considered one of the major nintendo series's. Im really happy its a home console version so they can be interested on making another one in the future
Switch sales will be down until the stock issue is sorted but that's gonna be a while. Badly want the Animal Crossing Switch 😊
@mesome713 I would not say the RE3 sales are horrible. The Resident Evil 2 Remake last year sold ~250,000 units the first week.

I think a big reason (apart from the game just being great!) is the fact that you need 2 copies if you want to play with your significant other or your kid together.
Of course, you could both play on the same island, but I'm sure a lot of people would prefer an island of their own .

@mesome713 thats just in japan but world wide the sales for those games are much higher then that.
New Horizons is aptly named; that seems to be the limit for how well it's doing!
That’s crazy. It’s a good game but if you own this you need mario kart too. Seriously
@RiasGremory Capcom stated RE3 underperformed. So I guess didn't do as good as they thought it would. Game is expensive to develop.

And thanks to "Animal Crossing helped me keep in touch with family and friends during the COVID-19 outbreak," this is going to be one of Nintendo's biggest franchises for a while! (Well, as long as they keep it meaty and interesting, which shouldn't be hard since it's not an annual franchise.)
Pokémon Sword / Shield... Tom Nook is coming for you. The amount of Bells New Horizons has generated already?! Wow. I see the New Nintendo 3DS, at just 58, still sold more than the XBox One S and Xbox One X combined... hilarious.
I suspect people are more in the mood to play a game where you go outside and socialize than they are to play a game where the irresponsible spread of a zombie virus dooms humanity.

Goodness it might surpass SSB and Pokemon in Japan! I hope this encourages Nintendo to give us lots of free (or honestly even paid) updates for a long, long time!
Holy heck. I'm genuinely shocked. This is rapidly becoming a culturally significant mainstream phenomenon. When they're in just the right element and company mindset, Nintendo has a knack for creating games which can genuinely appeal to anyone of any age - age 4 to 100. And they indisputably accomplish this rare feat more so than any other console manufacturer and developer - period. I would go so far as to say that Nintendo is definitely the Pixar of the games industry - beloved by anyone and everyone, especially by those with a heart.
