Animal Crossing: New Horizons: Tents - Can I Move My Tent?

So, you're settling down to several hundred hours on your deserted island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. You've landed, been given the brief from your guides, but now it's time to set up your tent. Veterans will know that your tent will eventually become your bricks-and-mortar house, so deciding where to pitch your tent in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a big decision - many people will be asking one question at the very start of the game: Can I move my tent later after I've chosen a location?

Short answer: yes, you can. Although you'll have to wait a bit! Unlike previous games in the series, it's entirely possible to relocate your abode (and other buildings for that matter) later in the game.

Can I move my tent in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Yes! Despite Tom Nook and his minions' implication that this is a huge decision, the fact is that if it turns out that you've accidentally pitched your tent in a dodgy area, or realise the constant trickling of water from the nearby stream is an irritation your don't need, you can eventually up-tools and move camp.

The option to move your residence won't be available right away, mind — it'll only come after a week or so of play.

How do I move my tent in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

To move your tent in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you'll have to have unlocked Isabelle and the Resident Services building on your island. Repeat, the building not the initial tent. Once that appears on your island (after about a week) you'll have the option to chat to Tom Nook and relocate your humble abode (which by this time will be a house rather than a tent).

It'll cost you, though — be prepared to splash the cash ('propel the Bells'?) in order to move your home or any other building. Other buildings cost a whopping 50,000 Bells each to move, although you'll be able to move yours for 'just' 30,000. Pricey, but the option is there!

While those might sound like sizeable investments at the beginning of the game, you'll soon be earning enough Bells to make these fees feel more than reasonable.

Where should I place my tent in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Firstly, there's no 'right' or 'wrong' place to put your tent, so don't get too caught up trying to optimise positioning. If you are going to play with friends online a lot, pitching your tent near the airport might be a good idea (don't worry, unlike real life you won't be disturbed very often my living under the main flight path to the island).

Alternatively, you might want to set yourself up near Nook's main plaza where you got your orientation presentation (which, in time, will become Resident Services). That will enable you to nip in and see the raccoon when you want to but and sell stuff.

Personally, being the misanthropic curmudgeons we are, we headed for the most remote, picturesque area we could find to get away from the hustle and bustle of it all. We were then able to 'help out' our neighbours by encouraging them to camp as far away from us as the island confines would permit. Genius!

However, were we to discover that living out in the sticks isn't as invigorating as we thought it would be, there's always the option to relocate.

Some trees disappeared when I pitched my tent - are they gone forever?

Yes, those specific digital trees have been erased from existence. BUT! You'll soon be able to plant, grow and even uproot and transplant trees to your heart's content. Remember, before pitching your tent you have the option to 'imagine' what it'll look like, so you can check to see if any trees will be chopped down to make space for your tent.

Every decision you make may seem momentous, but you can change and tailor your island more than ever before in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Indeed, naming your island is one of the few irreversible choices in the game. So chill those beans right down and just enjoy yourself.
